I'm heading to Jamaica in a month and were staying at the Sandals Ochos Rios Resort and Golf Club, golf is included at this course. Wondering if anybody has ever played this course and is it worth bringing the clubs along?? Thanks, Woody

Dude! I can't believe you actually are asking this.

I PLAYED it back in March of 2005, on my High School Senior Cruise. I did it through a Carnival Cruise and that part was terrible. The pro was this young kid and he sucked. I was better than him.

Anyway, I'm going to have to say it is NOT worth bringing the clubs for. I will go through the whole day for you.

First, you HAVE to have a caddy. It is mandatory. My caddy's name was Rudolph and I couldn't understand him and I gave him $40 dollars for a tip. I wasn't drunk, I just felt bad for those people. The trip on the way to the course, through the narrow streets and ruined shacks people called homes, was rather depressing.

The facilities seemed nice but I didn't get the TV impression that was burned in my mind for years. Yep, no Tom Cruise flipping booze bottles at the local bar, with hot babes in bikini's sipping on mixed drinks.

THE COURSE - it is OLD, and feels like an old school 1920's parkland course. Very little character to it and it is straight forward. The bermuda grass is not maintained the same way a GOOD course that has bermuda grass is maintained. The greens were the BEST they were going to be, and they were grainy and fast. The breaks were exagerated when putting against the grain of the green. Really different experience. The rough was fair and cut for enjoyment.

I was offered pot on two holes. A par three is by the property line and there was a little Jamaican kid selling pot, bracelets, cigars, and these neat necklaces with really cool beads. I bought a necklace for my girlfriend who was running around Jamaica with her friends. Not safe at all if you go off the beaten path, but what can you do?

Anyway, at the end of the round, me and the guys I played with (who were complete hacks) sat down and talk with our caddies at the onsite bar. Not a hopping place at all. I did see one babe, but she was wearing a Sandals work uniform.

Overall, if you need to get away from the wife for a little bit, then I would say YES do it. But for any other reason, It is only worth about $35 bucks. I paid $110, OUCH!!

I played it in October of 2007. The course as far as courses go was decent and the other guy described it very well. The caddie was an interesting experience but he miss clubed me all day. I had an entertaining caddie and I learned alot of stuff about the island I would not have learned otherwise. And Jamaica is beautiful place and some of the holes are very pretty there is one par three that you are as high up as yopu can get on the course and you look back over the course and see the ocean and it incredibly pretty. If you stay at the Sandels you get to play for free so If you are staying there then it's a nice day. I would not pay $110 for it. All in all I had a good time. I have a couple of pictures I will try to find and post.

I have played at this course many times in my travels and agree. The thing is, I was not out of pocket to the tune of $110 as it was free 4me.. If you go on a cruise and book golf through a cruise line or on-board, you will be slugged $50 or so extra for the golf day. A smarter golfer will do an internet search before their cruise to find out what the green fee's are before their cruise at the destination they wish to play at.
As for the golf pro you had who was from the cruise ship, that happens. I would say that he was not a golf pro but a certified instructor of the game. There is a huge difference.

As for being offered pot on the golf course? I never had that offer but a few taxi drivers gave me the offer. In other parts of the golfing world, I, my playing guests have been offered a wife and dare I say, a girl or 2 to take home after the round. Golf is a global game, very cultural.
