Or, "here is Sam Snead on this horribly long 420yd par 4. He has at least a two iron for his second." WHAT??
The balls we play today are just ridiculous.

Absolutely. It's pretty cool to see the equipment changes from just a few years ago. The size of the drivers those two were using are smaller than todays three woods. Pretty neat stuff to watch actually.

I prefer to thrash at a wedge myself since the number on the bottom of the club is more important to me than how close the ball ends up.
Admittedly, my wedge is actually a strong 9 iron in all but name and I've got a Pro V1 rather than a Tour Balata, but it makes me feel every bit the equal of a former world No.1 and one of the best ballstrikers ever by doing it - since I've got zero professional wins to my name and I'm about as likely to win a brace of Open Championships as I am to walk on Mars.
What a pointless post.
Almost as pointless as the reply I just typed out, in fact. It hurts that I'll never get those two minutes back.

yes...trying you were, without understanding the point of sarcasm. while being sarcastic one usually tries to make a point by exaggerating the opposite. you however didn't exeggarate enough, as to make a point. you were just writing how short they hit their irons....that is neither very sarcastic nor very funny, nor an accurate observation.

Your inability to recognize sarcasm amazes me, it does.
... that was a joke, too. An avatar joke, but a joke none-the-less.
Just so everyone who reads this knows, I wasn't ACTUALLY saying they stink. I was joking about the overwhelming changes which have taken place in just a few years regarding the equipment/ball/etc used. I thought the sentence about their clothes would make that clear... obviously I have some work to do on my stand up material!

WWofG is so cool, as you get sense of just how good those players were. WWofG and Celebrity Golf, where you see Palmer about 30 hitting a 5 iron from 165....or Matt Souchek hitting a 2 iron from 195...we're so spoiled by technology....makes you think, when Nicklaus and Sneed could drive a balata with a persimmon steel shaft 300 what could they have done with the superballs and mailbox sized drivers we have today? Of course their irons were not near as strong lofted as today....makes me wonder, Why do people try to hit an 8 iron 175? Was an 8 designed to be hit from that distance

I am surprised they were hitting 7 irons from 150, at least Norman anyway. Faldo was never all that long anyway.
Good Luck for a speedy recovery.

I must admit I erroneously marked it down as another 'I can hit a pitching wedge 150 yards, so I must be good' brigade load of codswallop.
Force of habit and all that...
