Big DD fan, made for a great U.S. Open to watch this year. Just caught this over on espn.com Jason Sobel's Blog:
1:54 p.m. ET: E-mail from Michael in Michigan:
What does David Duval's second-place finish do for him for this year and next? Does he qualify for the next two majors and next year's Masters? Will his money be enough to secure a card for next year?
It does a ton of good stuff for him. First, Double-D will now be eligible for each of the next four major championships -- the British Open and PGA this year, and the 2010 Masters and U.S. Open. As for trying to keep his card -- something that was very much in doubt entering this week -- he went a long way toward earning full privileges for next season. Like fellow runners-up Phil Mickelson and Ricky Barnes, Duval earns $559,830. Believe it or not, he had won only $53,284 in 2009 coming into this week. That new total now puts him at 80-something on the money list, well within the top 125. Based on last year's money list, he'd need to earn about a quarter-million more to retain his card.
David displayed a lot of courage out there today.....as with others, a few breaks would have put it in his lap.
What a great "phoenix rising from the ashes" story, though!
But Lucas is a very nice guy and had a really tough time getting over losing Dick, so I'm happy that he won if David couldn't.
Ok what did I miss here? How did he lose his dick? Does he have a pump up one now? Or one of those metal rod ones that you can "sculpt into action" yourself?

Your intellect is truly remarkable........ I can only hope you were trying to be comedic.
My sincerest congratulations to Double D. I hope that this is simply a single step on his way back to the top.

Alseep was referring top Dick Harmon who died recently.
Your post and replies are a joke mate.
Think before you post
Regular tour events though are not the same as the Open. His regular play on the tour for the last number of years has been like playing the open - lots of scrambling and shooting around even par - so not surprised to see him do well as his scrambling ability has been excellent given where he has been hitting his driver.
Hopefully, the driver accuracy returns - I think this was good for him to get his confidence back, so I hope the real DD is here to stay! He really is one of the best putters on the tour, so if he gets his GIR and Fairways hit up to the top 20 on tour, he could be the guy that challenges Tiger and Phil week in & week out again.
DD is showing that he can keep it together and not let a bad shot disrupt him, he was always my favorite golfer, so darn happy for him!
I have always loved the way he deals with adversity. Very mature and calm. I would have killed something after I made that triple. He just walked off like it was some easy par. Even when he bogied 17, he still was waving to the fans and smiling. What a great example of patience.
The question for me is not if/when DD makes his comeback into the winners circle, but if this finish will open some floodgates that have been holding David back for a long time. Lee Westwood had a similar dry spell (albeit shorter) and came back pretty strong after his confidence returned, and DD has also been sitting on a whole lot of talent.
I'll go out on a limb and predict a win in 2009 for Duval. He proved yesterday that he's once again more than tough enough to get the job done.
Edit: Overnight DD has advanced in the WOFM from #882 to #142. Pretty cool.
I think the fact he looked like a robot with no emotion showing behind his oakleys for years turned some people off, i admit i based on that found him a bit aloof...but i find it hard for anyone not to symphathize with being the best in world...then one of the worst pro's....
...very nice to see this and hopefully whatever mental blocks he has broken thru...stick. Good on ya david.
Given his status and difficulty in getting into some of the events, I would guess he had been committed to this week's event. That may or may not change now after his performance.

Funny that his mentality, even keelness and so called lack of expressing emotion is something we all desire and is obviously a necessity to be competitive at that level is exactly what he has been criticized for all these years. How many comments have been made about the glasses and all that crap. the guy is and has always been a gamer.
I have an article from Sports Illustrated some years ago that detailed a little of why DD was so withdrawn. He had a brother who had cancer. David donated bone marrow for his brother and doctors thought for a while he would survive. But, his brother died anyway and David blamed himself. I'm sure a lot of people do not know that about him and don't understand why he has always been a loner. It's nice that a large family has really opened him up some.
I have always been a huge DD fan and I am so happy to see him playing well again. I predict a win for him this year as well! I noticed yesterday that he is still using his Scotty Cameron from some years ago. He really made some clutch putts with it.
Every time David Duval was having a good round, I would come and get this thread going. As soon as I posted, he fell apart. This week I played it smart and waited until the tournament was over. I didn't want to jinx him.

Way to go DD!
Then you are summarily banned from this thread until he secures his tour card!!!....lol....

Had David Duval won last month's U.S. Open, it would have qualified as the best story in golf in a very long time...
That doesn't seem fair, because what Duval almost did was the stuff movies and fairy tales are made of. Here was a guy who had risen to the No. 1 ranking in the world in 1999, didn't seem to enjoy the view and slowly fell off the golf map, plunging to a No. 882 ranking as he entered the U.S. Open, just his second major since 2006.
But there Duval was, tied for the lead at Bethpage Black ...
Id be willing to bet if he put his old Titleist clubs in the bag,he'd be back. You dont shoot 59 in the final round to win and then forget how to play.Phil Knight started waving all that money in front of him and he switched clubs.Coincidently, thats about the same time his game went south. I think now that Nike is making a better product,he can potentially be back to form. His priorities changed after he won the open.Yeah,he won with Nike sticks but he staggered in.Same with Phil.He played his BEST golf when he was with Titleist.Hitting the hospitality tent on the 18 hole of the US Open was hideous. I play a Callaway driver because I tend to cut my 905R a little more than Id like. The FT-5 is a perfect fit for me but Phil isnt a 7 hdcp either.
Yeah -- That's why Tiger has really started playing poorly with his Nike equipment...
Tiger can win with anything. As a junior he won with Ping and Mizuno. He held all 4 majors at the same time {have the golf digest cover signed and on my wall} while playing Titleist.Im partial to Titleist.I will say I hit the forged version of the now discontinued CGI's and really did like them and could possibly see myself playing them.My irons are 2001 models and I still love them.I do like Nike golf shoes though and apparel.I mean no disrespect to Nike or anyone who plays them but I think Phil made a comment about Nike one day that didnt go over too well.Their balls, even though they are Bridgestone, are great as well.Just not my cup of tea.I do still believe that if he returned to the "magic 59 clubs" he would see an improvement. If nothing else than confidence. This years National Open really had me pulling for him. He's back at Augusta {which owes him!} now and I think things are starting to "click" for him now.Just like I predicted several months ago when this thread originally popped up.I think he is really starting to believe in himself again too.Im really pulling for him!!
I really hope this form continues. I would love to see a Tiger and Duval showdown in the near future.
You must love a good beat down
If I remember correctly, Duval took the #1 spot away from my boy Tiger. The only players that I have ever seen really stand up to Tiger are Vijay, O'hern and Duval.
every year since 98 Tiger finished as number one in the word that one was Vjay year I think Duval was for a moment in 2001
I am not against him if he indeed finishes a comeback. But let him climb some hills first before you have in take on Everest because I assure you Everest would beat him down be like and Ali Floyd Patterson fight.

I do not disagree that Tiger would take him down, but look at my original post. I hope his form continues and want a showdown in the near future, not right now. I just think maybe Duval's age and experience would serve him better than most, especially if his golf game shows up as well. You are right about a smackdown right now though!!
This is exactly why DD is the only one who could have ever seriously challenged Tiger. This is like Tiger saying "I'm close" for 6 months when he's going thru a significant swing change and firing balls all over the course.
These two have such ridiculous egos they would blame a butterfly fart for a bad shot. But that's why they are and were the best. If he ever gets it back he would be the guy who gives Tiger a run. He can do no wrong in his mind. Injuries (wrist, back, shoulder, neck), weight loss, weight gain, vertigo, family, grip caps...you name it. Never him. Sound familiar?
Unil he starts releasing hard left and playing a cut 90% of the time like he used to he'll never be consistent. But once that ball starts going left it's hard for guys who are rotary swingers to ever get back that confidence to turn that body like mad thru the ball.
Right now he's got a decent band aid in that he's taking it straighter back and dropping it under with serious spine tilt. If you here DD played a draw (like he did quite a bit at the US Open), he's not back. In his prime he aimed down the left and smashed it with a 15 yard cut. FEARLESS!!!
Right now he's still afraid. If I were his coach I'd stick an umbrella about 10 yds down the target line and make him hit 500 3 woods that have to start left of the umbrella and finish right of it. And the next day do the same thing.
I think the layoff has done some harm. Sitting at +4 through 5 holes into the second round, cut line looks to be -1. Unless there are opposite field events I am unaware of, there will be nothing for him to play in until October. Sitting 109 on the money list right now, I don't know if there will be many guys in the FedEx Cup who can pass him, or if most guys are in front of him.
I think he's relatively safe to stay in 126-150, which will get him conditional status, but he would still need Q school for a full card.
He needs to make this cut I think....but I'm not sure how easily he can get 4-5 shots back in 13 holes....
Yeah, he has slipped a little since the US Open. He'll play in 3 of the 5 Fall Series events, needing to finish in the top 125 Money Leaders at the end of the year for full Tour status in 2010. I think he'll do it. He is already exempt for the 2010 Masters, US Open and British Open.
