It is sad that simply receiving and invitation to play a tournament is news for JD these days...

I doubt he has even hit 1 practice ball between his last tournament and this week!

Now he has this new image of playing in his shades and stuff like he doesent care, acting as if good scores are going to COME TO HIM. Its not gona happen........John Daly is finished!

Also his putting technique these days is pretty poor i think!

So many haters.

He is -2 for the day which is only 4 shots off the lead. I hope he does well.

Well ... I do understand what you are saying, but really, let's be realistic. There are a few professional golfers that it is simply impossible to start a thread about without the thread veering off. You gotta know that. (Try starting a thread about what driver Michelle Wie is playing, and see how long that stays on topic).

And the thing is, there's no reason to curse the people here ... these players have brought it on themselves. What clubs is JD playing? The first thing I thought (and probably a lot of others) ... is, who cares? Truth is, the sponsors themselves don't give Daly exemptions because of his golf. The question is no longer about whether he'll win, its about whether he'll even make the cut (that only happens about 1/3 of the time anymore). The dude is ranked, like 750 or something.

Sponsors don't invite him because of golf, they invite him (plain and simple) because he is (to use a kind word) "colorful". He draws an audience.

So questions about his clubs, or his swing, or other such things that people might discuss about other players really just don't strike most folks as even being very relevent. Any conversation that starts this way will quickly turn into discussing other aspects of Daly.

But before you curse people here too badly, I'd ask you to consider this ... most of the people you are calling "worthless", the ones that make snide remarks, are actually people that used to completely love him. They are angry at him, and dis him, because they loved him. This is a board full of very good golfers, that know a lot about golf.

Many of us saw his talent, saw him at his best. And as we've watched his gradual descent into his own personal pit over the past two or three years, many of us kept hoping he could pull himself out of it. For months. Then years. A lot of the people cursing him really (really) want to like him. But at a certain point, you just get angry. Precisely because you want so much to like him.

In realistic terms, his clubs, his game, don't really matter much anymore (even to sponsors). What matters is his alchoholism, the fact that every time I see him play, his weight seems to be even greater. The tremendous talent that was lavished upon him by the golf gods (talent at levels that few golfers in any generation have, talent that you can still see brief flashes of, talent that anyone on this board would kill to have) ... has been dishonored. This really pisses most good golfers off (because are the one's that most fully appreciate what talent is).

But please do consider ... the reason a lot of people are pissed at him, and dis him, is identical to the reason you'd support him, and ask about his clubs.

Everyone wants to like him.

Played with Langer today i think. From what i saw today he was playing the mp-67s which someone has already stated. Some sort of hybrid with a V2 shaft which he nailed off 9. Taylormade TP maybe?? didnt get a good look. r7 limited with an Axiv Core. ( change from tour burner??). Wedges with usual graphite shaft. The putter is likely the studio select hes been playing.

According to his website, he's playing Taylor Made woods and hybrid, Vokey wedges and a MacGregor Bobby Grace putter. The irons are simply listed as 'MacGregor' with no futher details.

It's anyone's guess how accurate the info is (and I haven't seen any of the TV coverage myself) but that's the official line.

Glad some people are culturally aware yet what is the purpose of this Japanese method? Preserving honor, what has he done in the past 5 years thats been honorable to anyone of his supporters? And yes, I did love John Daly as a player, especially when he turned himself into Callaway after he violated his contract (drinking). Those days are gone, the old John Daly is gone he spits in everyone's face and hopes to be forgiven. My point was he has no honor anymore.

On a slightly lighter note, Nick Faldo is also playing in HK this week, playing R7 irons with red graphite shafts.

IIRC the correct term for the honorable way of Japanese disembowelment is "seppuku".

"Hara kiri" is just a literal translation meaning split belly?

Just trying to add info.

Daly is -4 now and is playing well. I am really enjoying watching him play and still think he can turn things around. I am so sick of seeing golfers who walk the line so much. So many of them are squeay clean and its refreshing to see a bum like Daly :D

He was using a scotty cameron newport putter today.

as mentioned -4 under, 15th spot, pretty clean sheet today with 3 birdies, 14 par, 1 bogey... 16 GIR's ... it's a start, I know I'd take it....

As also mentioned, yes many of us are frustrated by JOhn's talents vs his efforts to sabotage those same talents. Bottom line is none of us are perfect, others farther than most. John spits the wrong way and it's news... how many people have alcohol issues, divorce and custody problems , we all have something.. I agree though as he's a public figure, price you pay for being talented/famous, you need to set a better standard...

Of late, John's standards F, John's golf D- .... his life improves, so will his golf....

grip it, and rip it!

Ditto the above - and Olazabal seems to be doing well in terms of both his health and getting his game back into a semblance of order.

Hopefully all three players can have an encouraging result this week and use it as a springboard to getting back into regular form.

I agree, its refreshing to watch the ones who spend their nights at the bar, instead of preparing/resting up. All the players used to hit the bar at night, with few exceptions. In this era of tiger and everything being so physically competitive, there far less characters are out there than there before. Look at Mickelson, I love to watch him play, but he brings zilch to the table personality wise (other than being genuinley nice). Roco Mediate has been seen downing scotch like its water more than once :drinks: (maybee not as much latley) and still he gave us a thrill ride at the US open. Some guys can handle it others, like Daly, not so much.

I'd agree with that; it's a shame that the 'characters' seem to be fewer and further between in modern professional golf.

I think it's pretty fair to say that Daly has taken things a bit far in the past, but it's a shame the Simon Hobdays of this world are now extinct. Even some minor mishief makers like in the golden days of Robert Lee, Mark Roe and Russell Claydon would be a welcome change from the gym monkeys and slaves to sports psychologists that make up 95% of a modern field.

I wonder if back in the 50's and 60's if John Daly's antics would have even made the news?

Unlikely - he certainly wouldn't have had the money in the 50s he had to burn in the 90s/00s.

Good to see the big man playing some good golf - hopefully he can kick on from here and sustain some form, it would be great to see him full-time in Europe in 2009.

yeah they reported on things like public drunkedness wife beat getting arressted with drawing from tournaments suing people that gave you and invitation.

The press talked about jerks back then too.

Only problem with JD playing well, is if he gets more money, he gets himself into more trouble. Yes, he can still play, but the man needs help, not clubs. Like to see him get it together!

Im glad to see daly playing well, and I am also tired of the people around him not getting him the help he needs. Alcoholism is a disease that needs to be treated and Ill leave it at that. Daly needs a little tough love to get himself back on track.

JD will not even admit he has a problem how are you going to help that.

I will never understand why he still has fans. He does not deserve them
