With the arrival of short days and cold temperatures here in the Northeast, it’s just about time to hang up the FJ’s for the year. While the cold weather gear is certainly available, personally, my benchmark is 50 degrees. Anything at or above and I’m calling around for a foursome. We’ve been fortunate the past few winters to meet that threshold so the spikes are never really that far from reach. In fact, we’ve developed a bit of a tradition where we play CrossWinds golf course each January around my birthday. We’re up to three years in a row now which is pretty unlikely when you live in the frozen tundra of Massachusetts.
So when does your season end? Is there a minimum temperature? First snowfall? Are you a fortunate year-rounder?
Even though I live in Northern Italy I can describe myself and my crew as year-rounder golfers... we play and organize 2-3 tournaments on the snow but asap we take our bags and go and play on the Riviera in Liguria or Tuscany where the weather is definetly better...
I think mine ended today. I went through some rain/sleet/snow. I don't have the proper apparrel for that. All and all, it was a fun season though. I can only hope that this january is as mild as it was around New years so I can get a bit of a golf fix in.
Unfortunately I think it's been over here since the beginning of the month. With daylight savings in effect, the driving range closes at 3:30 PM (I get off work around 4) and it's totally dark at 5 PM, so there's no time to practice putting or play any holes.
Even if I wanted to, it's in the 40s and raining steadily. Weekends are the only time I'll have any chance to play until April or May.
Fortunately, we live in Texas, and pretty much play year round. We might miss an occassional weekend due to an ice storm or something. But the next week it might be 75.
We used to live in Wisconsin, and that four or five month off season was brutal. I feel for you.
I live in North Carolina (Fayetteville/Ft Bragg) so we can play pretty much year round. When the temp is below 40 degrees for the high, I wont play but if the high is going to be over 40, I will play. That only happens a few times over the winter here.
My golf season ends in July and picks back up in September. I get out really early every couple weeks in the offseason but I pretty much stop going to the range.
Can play pretty much year round here in Middle Tennessee, but it gets a little dicey in January and February. Of course, most people around here don't like to play when it's 30* F outside. Makes for some fast rounds though!
I live in the Kansas City Metro area and this is the first weekend I will probably not play because of the cold weather. Highs in the upper 40's with a 25mph. That being said it could be in the 70's next weekend and I have played every month of the year some years. Of course there have been other years when there is snow on the ground from late December till early March, but usually by St Pats Day the golf season is up and going if you dont mind some chilly weather and frequent rain. During the Months of December thru Feb. you really have to have some good luck and good timing. It may be 55* and sunny at work on Friday and then snow on Sat. or vice versa. I will be suprised if I dont get to play at least once or twice more in Nov. and Dec. but Jan and Feb are always a crap shoot.
Yeah....34* isn't happening for me. Yesterday we had 2 golfers all day. We were laughing...I think it was 45*. If it's 45* in January....we'd have a slew of people out to play. But since it's really the first really cold day we had....they all stayed inside.
With that being said....I pulled out the hitting mat and net. Time to get the basement set up for the long winter.

Count me in on that 45* in January, if you havn't played in 3 or 4 weeks all the sudden 45* aint that bad
That is the crazy thing about the weather around here, it may be 25* with 12 inches of snow one day and a couple of days later it is sunny and 55*. You have to be flexible and ALWAYS, I repeat ALWAYS keep the clubs in the trunk, you just never know...........
Never where I live (near Sea Island, GA). I usually don't play much December-February, though, just because I'd rather play golf without a jacket than with one.
Tracy, if ya dont mind me asking.. What unit you with!

Well, played today, here in NY & it wasn't that bad... continuous "mist" made EVERYTHING wet and humid. Annoying, but bearable.
I stop playing the golf courses when the temperatures hit below 40* in the early mornings, so, it hasn't gotten to that point yet, but I know it's coming! Thus, I think it end for me around end of November & it starts up again around early March? It depends on how the winter temperatures go for that day/week/weekend/month.
I continue to go to the driving range (Spring Rock, L.I.) over the course of the winter, about once every week or couple of weeks, as, they do an "okay" job enclosing the hitting stalls with vinyl liners (w/velcro curtains for in & out entry) and heaters above the stalls.
Here in Oregon - when the ski season begins (December - March). You can play during that time but the course conditions are usually muddy and wet and the grass is dormant. I'll get out during the occasional sunny weekend day during that time.
Central NJ. I'm a 45* man myself. Almost as important is minimal wind and no rain on the colder days. My son likes the cold so it's not a big deal to get him on the course in the colder days.
This is my first Winter playing on a course- just took up the game in 2007 and went to the range and took lessons almost all of last Winter. Of course, I'm fortunate enough to have a heated range to go to. Anything to keep the swing in shape.
But we're not planning on playing on a course from after Thanksgiving until March unless we get some 45*+ days with no wind and no rain.

Hey CL, hope you're doing well and staying warm!
Same here, I ain't playing in this cold. My home course has a charity tourney today while temps never got above 40's with strong brutal winds from north. Not my kind of golfing weather even though many guys tried to get me to play on their team.
If it's in January or February, I would play in temps of low-mid 30's only if it's sunny with no wind after being acclimated to this cold weather.

managing to stay warm. keeping busy. i don't think it made 40 today and there were people out playing. windy and no sun.....def. not for me. not looking good for veteran's day.
we'll have to hook up for a round when it get's warm. start the countdown!
below 50, i'll ride if the cart is covered and there is a heater....otherwise I'm walking. UA, hand warmers, turtle fur, and baily's/coffee make it almost bearable.
Here in CT we can usually play til mid December, sometimes later. Every once in a while in January and February we get a really warm day, but that just means it's virtually impossible to get out somewhere. I will play comfortably when it's in the 40's, 30's is a little chilly for me. Last year I played when it was 20* and was snowing midway through the round. Can't say that I would ever want to do that again!
My personal limit is about 55* and sunny, any colder and I will not play. Fortunately in NC we get at least 4-6 days a month during December-March that are about 60* so the season never really ends.
It's been lightly snowing all day...think it finally ended for this year. Granted, as long as there's not snow on the ground and we get a sunny high 40s day, I'm sure we'll be out there.
Living in Western Pa when the 1st concernable snow arrives that kind of puts a halt to golf but when there isnt much snow and it's above 35 or so we play , i just bundle up a little and go once your'e moving it's really not to bad
Most of the time I wish I could play year-round but, call me crazy (as I'm sure some of you will), there's something kind of nice about taking a few months off to get recharged. It's amazing how time away from the game tends to suppress all the bad shots and negative swing thoughts and get's you excited all over again for the beginning of the next season. You spend time thinking about the swing, what worked and what needs improvement and where you look forward to playing the following year. Perhaps I'm alone on this, but I don't mind the lay-off. And as a few others have pointed out, with global warming a real issue, January golf has become a regular part of the routine! YAY global warming!!
