The USGA announced on Wednesday that The Olympic Club in San Francisco will be the host site for the 2012 U.S. Open. Olympic has hosted four previous Opens, the most recent in 1998 when Lee Janzen won the championship. Other winners at Olympic were Jack Fleck in a playoff over Ben Hogan in 1955, Billy Casper in a playoff over Arnold Palmer in 1966 and Scott Simpson in 1987.
Olympic has also hosted four other USGA championships, including the 2004 U.S. Junior won by Korean-born Sihwan Kim.
Designed by Sam Whiting, Olympic Club’s Lake Course opened in 1927 and was the site of the 1958 U.S. Amateur (Charles Coe) and 1981 U.S. Amateur (Nathanial Crosby).
"Olympic is a great venue, has a wonderful history of national championship and it’s a fine golf course," said Driver. "The membership and the community are very much in favor of having the Open there."
Prior to 2012, the U.S. Open will be played at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. (2006); at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club (2007); Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego (2008); Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Farmington, N.Y. (2009); Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links (2010) and Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. (2011).
