Extra info on Tiger's irons you may not have known
These irons were specially made for Tiger by Titleist. Tiger previously used a mixed set of Mizuno blades, Titleist made these clubs especially for Tiger and they were modeled on the Mizuno MP-14's and MP-29's. When arranging his contract with Titleist, he stipulated that he would sign if they could make a set identical to the Mizunos he was using. They obliged, and a very lucrative contract was formed for both parties.
Believe it or not Tiger's irons are actually weak in loft compared to other tournament players clubs, so don't believe any rubbish about him using de-lofted clubs to hit his irons so far.
The irons feature taper tip X-100 shafts tipped 1/4" and a D4 swing weight. Their length is graduated down in half-inch increments from a 39-inch 2-iron - 2-iron: 21 degrees loft/60 degrees lie (for most club makers, this is about one degree upright); 3-iron: 24 degrees loft/61 degrees lie; 4-iron: 27/62; 5-iron: 30/63; 6-iron: 33/63.5; 7-iron: 37/64; 8-iron: 41/64.5; 9-iron: 45/65; pitching wedge: 50/65.
Lofts: All irons 2 degrees weak (2 iron is 21 degrees)
Shaft: Dynamic Gold X 100 (tipped 1/4")
Lie: 1 degree upright
Swing weight: D4

I have a set of custom grinds I have had and played for 5 years now. The number on them is 13 with 2 bands just above the 13. I love em. I hit em pure too. I can't post pics but if anybody wants to post them for me I would be glad to email them to you and you can post them for me. I have tried everything for it to work here and can't do it. Thanks

Josh

Hey thanks for doing this for me. I sent them to your email just now. When you guys see em I have the diamonds in the face. I was told by an old friend on the titleist van that they were made in 95-97 time.

I got the face shots sent to you. The single pic is a PW, the 3 clubs are PW, 7 iron, 5 iron. Yes I play them a ton. I hit them pretty pure too, the marks don't lie. :drinks:

Nice set there JDH. I wonder what the red port (dot) on the back represents? Also, it looks as is if some of the muscle has been shaved off the back to change the weight meaning that this set was most likely personally fitted and played by a pro. Also, I am no expert, but I don't recall seeing a set of Custom Grinds with the two rings on the hosel. My Special Grinds have the rings but no grind number. Anyway, VERY NICE !!!

Great clubs Josh
Where did you get them and what shafts are in them.
I have not seen a set of customs with the rings either. They also look very fat. 4 years ago I had a set of customs that where ground like that and I sold them to a guy in the states. My set had no rings though.

Lol my custom grind set doesnt have the rings but does have the grind number, and also has no Titleist inscription on the cavity... Whats up with that?
Is there anyone who has seen a set like that?

I have TX-1's in them. Hard stepped 1 too. They are pure, I got them from a buddy on the titleist van when I was getting ready for a monday qualifier for the nissan open. There was a pro hitting them on the range and he brought that pro a new set and the pro told the guy that I would love these. I had a few words with the pro and thanked him for that and played them that round too. The pro was an awesome, I still have his number too. pm for more details if you would like on the pro.

The PW has negative 9 degrees of bounce on the sole- 9 iron is at -6 then the at the 5 it is zero then the only club with actual postive bounce is the 2 iron at 4 degrees. Thanks for the compliments.

Here are a few up to date pics of the Raw Elk tour model clubs. I took them out of the box today and they have rusted up. This is how I first got them and I like this look more than the satin (cleaned with scotchbrite pad) pics earlier of them after they where cleaned.

Addam,

Looking at this set and comparing it to my "blank" custom grind set makes me feel that the grind is almost identical as to muscleback, toe, heel, leading edge etc..
Is there a grind number on those Raw Elk grinds? You stated earlier that the tour model could say Custom Grind or Tour Model on the back, is this also a custom grind set?

Hope to hear from ya.

Hi Marco
The raw set are almost identical to my other elks which are number #15 on the hosel of my chrome ones. The raws are a thinner top line. The raws have no custom number but are custom ordered.

Look What I got for my birthday off Robert Elkington
Hi guy's
I caught up with rob the other day and I got a set of Steve's original Cubic Balance Elk Grind.
These clubs are the first set ever that where made and given to Steve from Cubic Balance and after month's of development this set was to Elks grinding spec's and hit by him.
This club is Very Very rare as a production model and I think there was only 750 set's made after the model was cleared by Elk as a great grind.
SPECS
5 Iron Length 37.5 inch
Lie 60
Swingweight D5
Golf Pride Tour Velvet Victory Cord
Dynamic Gold X100

I have added a pic of the 7 iron against my 1997 Titleist Elks.
I hit them today and they are one of the pureist Blades I have ever hit.

Hey guys,

I have sold my Titleist collection since I last posted on this thread, but I have a few thoughts;

1. Not all the information on Titleist's website is entirely accurate, according to more complete sources I've found. Realize that there is no money, and therefore no real need for accuracy, in their "historical" section. It is my belief that no one at Titleist has good records of their past forgings (and I'm talking about retail production models, forget custom grinds!). I had been in direct contact with several people there (through a local rep), and they simply don't have the info, and no one seems to have been there long enough to remember these clubs. There may be more info in this thread than Titleist has!

2. Some of the stampings, especially on the hosel, may have been done later. It is not uncommon for a club refinisher to stamp the hosels to identify clubheads to a certain customer. I think some of those referred to specific grinds, but I wasn't able to find any info on that. (I didn't collect custom grinds, per se, just the production models, but I had a few sets...)

If anyone is interested, I have - what I believe to be - the definitive list of Titleist's production model forgings, from the beginning through the 695s. It's in FileMaker format, and created on a Mac - it might be openable by Filemaker on PC, but I don't know... If anyone wants it, email me at

pegleg7@mindspring.com

If someone wants to construct a post for GolfWRX containing the info,  that's fine by me. I don't especially have the time or the inclination :clapping:

Sorry to be a dick, but this has been driving me crazy.

An apostrophe goes before an s in only in contractions (e.g., it's for 'it is') and possessives (e.g., Titleist's for 'belonging to Titleist').  The word 'it' is the exception to the possessive rule; no apostrophe before the s (its, not it's for 'belonging to it').

I'm sure I'll take a beating for this, but my compulsive side won't let it go.   ;)   Flame on!

Hi Pegleg,

Too bad you have sold your collection. Did you sell them all to one collector or sold them all seperately? Anyway I think your list of Titleist Forgings is quit complete. You have helped me a lot with identifying my Custom Grind set and think that your list should be published here. (So Titleist can update their site with correct models ;) ) Is there any way you can do a "save as" on that file so a non-mac user can open it?
Hope to hear from you.

@Addam: You lucky Bas....! Those clubs are beautifull!!

Grtz Marco

PS. I got a response from a very helpfull Titleist Customer service rep about my 34 grind number. He actually kind of confirmed what Pegleg is mentioning. That the number could be for identifying the clubs when returning from Grinding, in stead of telling wich grind it is. Another source (ex tour van clubfitter) mentioned something about the grindnumbers were telling something about the year that they were made. So Addam: provide us with the grindlist from your m8!!!! :cheesy:
