Hi Everyone,

I have a left-handed set of Titleist Tour Models. I think they must be 1983 models as the Titleist website does not seem to mention any other models coming in left hand.

I was just wondering if anyone had any more detailed specs on this model, particularly the amount of bounce?

Thanks,

Rob
Mr Titleist-

No other Titleist forged iron models came left handed during this period.
Nothing else was offered.
The LH Titleist "Tour Models" you have were essentially First Flight "NALG Approved" irons with a Titleist stamp.
100_8329.JPG
Any specifications you seek regarding bounce and progression would be there.
No muscleback models, no sweepback models.  No box blades.  There really isn't any comparison.
Compared to their RH models, the only thing  the LH clubs shared in common was the "Titleist" stamp.

rex235,

I never noticed until today that someone had replied!!!

I take it that the First Flight blades were not very good?

Cheers,

Rob

Rob-

No.. First Flight was a good enough manufacturer to offer Jack Nicklaus a contract...

In comparison to the RH models Titleist offered, there wasn't much ...

Titleist made great RH models in the 80s to lure away RH Tour players with other staffs

The LH Titleist model was essentially this First Flight model....

Some of the early First Flight blades were designed by Toney Penna...and featured a mill cut like the MacGregor 985.

Here is a photo of an early  RH First Flight model, and the Toney Penna Original iron...for comparison.

LH Models like this are very hard to find.

First Flight was one of the top club makers in the 60's. I played both the woods and the irons in High School (MacGregor Expeditor SW, Hogan "The Rail" putter).
FF had some good tour staff. There was a fair amount of changing in those day as there is now. A lot of people don't realize that there were no Titleist clubs in those days. Interestingly enough is that FF ownership changed twice, the last time it became part of Arnold Palmer Golf Club Company and the brand disappeared although the company remained in Tennessee. Acushnet bought Golfcraft who was noted for making a more square looking iron head (blunt toe). Their Continental set of irons were rebadged as the first Titleist irons. But they were made only in right handed models. Ironically Acushnet went to First Flight for some rebadged left handed clubs. Some think it was the FF designed blade that eventually was copied to create the first Titleist standard blade that followed the "Continental" design which went on to be the mainstay blade that has been tweaked and modified back and forth throughout the years. Of course most of all of these came from the original Macgregor Tommy Armour blades from way back. Also interestingly the Titleist 88 blades which were successful (I played them for awhile then and I still have them), has design origins "borrowed" from Wilson.

Can anyone help with with a set of 681 Custom Grinds???  I am looking to purchase a set and having the serial number I called Titleist.  They were able to verify the 5 character serial number on the hosel, but said they did not have any specifics on the 'Custom' grind, set is too old.

Is there a way of deciphering the grind from the serial number? Or how do you find the original purchaser?

Digging this thread up from the past to ask a simple question...are Titleist Custom Grinds still worth paying anything for? I don't know why, but I just can't seem to shake the Titleist blade infatuation. I was all but set on getting a newer set of irons...leaning toward AP2 712. Then out of nowhere, these pop up for sale...

My best guess is that they are '97 models. Stamped #45 on the hosel. Can someone quickly talk me out of scrapping my plan to update my golf clubs and getting these instead?

No idea what those are worth so my response is useless.

However;

Those are gorgeous!!!  I would snatch those up if I were you!

Also, if you wait a few months you can probably get a set of 712's on sale since the 714's are coming out this year.

I want them bad enough, but I have nothing to really show for my "dedication" to previous Titleist Tour Models. :D  Although, the best I ever played was with a '91 set that I lost the 8 iron from and then sold them. I like the shape of these way more than my current '85 set. The Brunswick Precision FCM 6.0 shafts that are in them are decent shafts, as well. I just can't seem to put a price on them that I'm comfortable with to seal the deal. Just can't shake the idea of wanting to go modern...

Hi guys. Loved this old thread. I've recently got my hands on a set of Custom Grinds, 1-SW with matching serial numbers "#13711" and Grind #30. Any information you're able to provide on their age or previous owner would be awesome. I'll post some images as soon as I can.

Hi Procombo and welcome to Golfwrx,
I have seen a few of these around and from what I know Titleist made some blank back set's for pro's. So with Titleist Custom Grinds the idea was you could order them how you wanted to. If the Serial numbers are on the hosel or ferrul you may be able to find out more about them. These ones of yours are rare and If you ever want to sell them let me know.
There was a set of Custom grinds on ebay just last week that where the Tiger MP29 grind type and the starting bid was $1450.00
I have seen a set for Peter Jackobsen the same as these ones though.
The satin finish is not that common on the Custom grind version but more common on my ones pictured below.
Here are another set of mine, very rare satin 681 custom grinds were supposed to be for Mark O'meara. But it is hard to find out much and titleist are hard to find out much from anyway. I have sent over 10 emails to them with no replies when it comes to getting anwers regarding tour issue clubs.
Anyway you have a great set there and I hope you are going to use them.
I hope I have helped in some way and I will try to find out some more info for you.
PS
I am still looking for a set of ELK grinds to Buy if anyone has a set they want to sell.
Best wishes
Addam smith

I would cheat on my wife with these irons

Hi Judge
That was the best thing about custom grinds, they could be set up with leading edge, bounce, muscle shape, toe shape, lie, loft to suit the player.
Here are some pics of that one that was on ebay.
They where a custom set for some tour player and not for tiger. The guy called them tiger grinds because they are a very rare custom order and looked like MP 29's. If you look on the hosel you can see the number 87 which means that is the grind style, This way if you ordered a set you could just quote the number and Titleist would make it to that same shape every time.
To give you some idea the Elk model are really fat more like my satin 681 cusoms and the Curtis Strange set are really thin from above looking down from above.
I will post the optins list for Custom grinds here when I find the details on my computer. It has every option Titleist offered on the Custom Model.
Below are some pics of the set that was on ebay.

Hmmm....  looking for more info on my custom grinds and came across this thread again.... hadn't read it all the way through in a couple years.... seems like I have either this same set or an identical one...mine appear to be rechromed so could be these very ones. Anyone have any info or recollection which player they were made for?  Any one remember or have pics of whccih titleist irons the staffers from the mid to late 90s played...google search doesn't reveal much....  thought this might be a cool topic to resurrect for all you titleist MB lovers out there....

I don’t know anything about them.

But you better refinish those bad boys and let them bust a couple nuggs.

My Titties, '86-'90 Tour Model Bullet Backs #7 grind except PW has no grind # but all ferrule numbers are matching from 3-PW(A09P) DGS300 shafts and GP VICTORY grips. Very shiny! I have them for sell for $500 CDN. But I really don't want to sell them that's why I am asking so much. They are MINT! Apart from minor dechroming on toe of PW.

Awesome set.  Rare to see grind  number stamps without custom grind logos.  That’s a very round toe set.

I may have to post some pics of my custom grind set in case folks have forgot what they look like ! 😜

That’s a later 89-90 set.  Odd to see diamonds on the face but no bullet back.  Also has P for pitching wedge on sole instead of the actual words “ pitching wedge “ like most 86-90 bullet  backs have.  Very nice !

Apparently from what I have read through this thread, I believe Addam mentioned that some early '91-'94 models came with the diamonds on the face, that's what those look like '91-'94 Tour Models.

My 1985 Tour Model satin: All matching ferrule #'s (55769) 2i has a S,  3-4 has a 0, 5-7 has an S, and 8-PW has a 0. Whats that all about? messing around with paint fill ideas.

See those raw ones are odd in that they have the older script on the pw sole and yet no diamonds on the face.

My 1985 Tour Model satin: All matching ferrule #'s (55769) 2i has a S,  3-4 has a 0, 5-7 has an S, and 8-PW has a 0. Whats that all about? messing around with paint fill ideas.

Now that’s a new one to me. Never seen aternating numbers like that.
