Could he work for someone else, if he and another player wanted that arrangement, or does Tiger "own" him? Is this even a realsitic possibility? Just wondering...

Why would he want to even jeopardize that in any way? He makes and has made enough cash with Tiger, doing that would be silly and bad business. If I was Stevie I would take a little time off and enjoy. I am sure he has the means to do so after working with the human money machine, TW.

I am sure he could....but why would he even contemplate that?

Bad move if he did, IMO...unless he was helping out someone as a request by his current employer.

Stevie will be chillin, and probably alot with Tiger. I can imagine some beers and steak in the Barbie :)

They are such good freinds I cant imagine Stevie would want to work for anyone else... he would rather retire I think you would find ;)

Stevie will be chilling, sometime with Tiger.

Stevie will also spend a lot more time with his racing business in New Zealand.

Me think that Stevie would very much welcome this break from totting Tiger's bag and will rest to be ready for a grueling 2009 campaign.

If I remember correctly, I heard on the broadcaste that Steve is the highest paid something from Australia. Anyone else recall anything?

I highly doubt Stevie would be spending any time with Tiger. He spent the last 8 weeks prior to the US Open with his wife and kid, and said he didn't miss the golf at all. So I suspect he would be very happy to spend another 8+ months with the family.

As for the OP, if TW agrees, then of course Stevie can caddy for someone else, but for the reasons above, why would he? It's not like he needs the experience.

On a related note, one thing I would like to see Stevie do is maybe get a few weeks in the booth for the golf telecast. Let's hear some commentary from the caddy perspective instead of always hearing from the former player.

:busted2:

Yep, Steve Williams is the highest paid person in any profession from Australia, which is incredible when you consider that Australia has a population of almost 200,000 now.

Even our Emperor doesn't make as much as Steve Williams...

First of all, Stevie is from New Zealand and not Australia.

His big other insterest, aside from totting Tiger's bag, is Saloon Racing (basically the British version of stock car racing). Check all this out on Stevie's official web site http://www.kiwicaddy.com/

Here's an article:

Williams also done for the year after Tiger's gutsy win

Says he will miss his first major in 30 years with the upcoming British Open (sorry, Open Championship!) next month. An impressive streak.

Good on yah jzat!
Yes Steve is from NZ and is the richest sportsman.
Ironic as he doesn't play a sport.
I doubt he will caddy for anyone other than Tiger and who can blame him.

Ahhh man, who will I put the stopwatch on to see how fast he takes his caddy bib off at the 18th green?

I believe that Stevie has been pushed in to third place as New Zealand's highest paid sportsman by Ryan Nelson and Scott Dixon. Nelson plays for Premiership Football team Blackburn Rovers and earns just over £3m a year before endorsements. Since Scott Dixon's Indianapolis 500 win, I think he may now have the top spot but it's certainly between those two.

Michael Campbell is now in fourth although he was the highest paid in the 6 months/year following his U.S Open win.

As for the original question. Even if Stevie could caddy for someone else while Tiger's injured, I doubt he would. May as well take the well earned rest now before the 'push for 19 Majors' starts again next year.

I may be mistaken but I remember reading it from a GOLFWRX thread somewhere that Stevie is actually paid on salary and his earnings do not really depend on Tiger's winnings. Thus, money will keep flowing to the bank account as Tiger's caddie and he gets the rest of the year off maybe?

Unless it's a belter of an annual salary, I'd prefer to be on 5%/7.5%/10% if I'm honest.

Tiger earned just over $10m on the course last year. Haven't heard anything about a salary but I know that I wouldn't turn down 10% of that!

Remember that Stevie also has his own endorsement deal with Valvoline and I believe he gets some money from Nike each year as well.

His career earnings (including his time with Ray Floyd and Greg Norman) are estimated to be over $20m.

The idea of putting Steve in a broadcast booth is awesome. That would be great to have the #1 player's caddie tell it like it is...

Considering Stevies previous converstions about retirement at the end of the year, I highly doubt he even considered working when Tiger told him they were shutting it down.

i think you might see him filling in on a bag this year as a favor becasue a caddie needed time off (medical, family, birth of child). i know tiger had someone else's caddy on his bag for a tournament or two because steve was at home for the birth of a child.

I'm teeing off this Saturday at 11.38 at Sitwell Park in Rotherham.

Its a big one though as it's Golfer of the Year Medal number 7 and the prize fund may hit £200.

Sadly its pro shop vouchers and not cold hard cash if I win...

Make sure he keeps his cap on Paul.

And put double knots on his bib so he can't whip it off a couple of nanoseconds after you hole out on #18.

For the win mate, hopefully.

That is correct. Ryan Nelsen is the highest paid athlete/sportsman from NZ. He's also a Stanford alum, so technically, all of NZ owes Stanford some donations.

Cheers,
Tim

He could work at LAX - he's good at carrying heavy stuff and dealing with demanding clients. All he needs is one of those little carts.

If it is true that Stevie is paid a salary than the point is moot and I am sure he will enjoy his time off. At any rate I am sure that he is being taken care of.

If he was working solely off of a percentage I think he might look for a temporary loop. No matter what your tax bracket you live according to a certain expected salary. Why would Valvoline pay him for his shirt logo if he isn't on TV?

From what I understand (from hearing from people who knows this business), Stevie gets 10% of Tiger's earnings on the course, and that would put him at around US$1M a year. Not too bad for toting a bag and giving advices to the boss.

But seriously, Tiger and Stevie do form a real TEAM. On Monday, Stevie called off Tiger as he was ready to hit a 7 iron (forgot on which hole) and persuaded Tiger to change to a 8 iron (Johnny Miller even commented that it takes guts to call off a player as he was prepared to swing). Tiger subsequently nailed his shot and he looked at Stevie, smiled broadly and nodded in approval. Now, THAT is what I call TEAMWORK!

I would be willing to bet that Stevie will never tote another player's bag - how can you top caddying for the number one player in the world, and arguably the best player of all times?

Stevie gets a nice Salary each year plus a percentage of his winnings. The reason that is not out there for the public to know is well just ask FLUFF and he will tell ya. Tiger does not discuss money and does not want his caddie to do so either.

Stevie and Tiger are VERY good friends as well. Tiger has raced one of Stevie's cars, he has bungy jumped and based jumped with Stevie and they DO hang out alot with both there families. Remember Tiger trains ALOT but he only averages 17 tournaments a year. So he does spend time with his buddy Stevie, the nice thing is he can go visit him in New Zealand and get around alot better than he ever could here in the states with the poparatzee following him wherever he went.

Stevie won't be caddying for anyone else, for the next 8 months or the rest of his career probably. He doesn't need the money and I'm sure he'll be spending the time with his family and with Tiger, enjoying the time off.

It would be cool if he auctioned himself off for charity.

How much would you pay to have Stevie on your bag?

.
..
...Would be awkward if Phil got the highest bid.

If Tiger was a different sort of guy, I might wonder how much he would pay Stevie to misclub him at critical times...
