I golf. I play golf.  I am playing golf.  I went to play golf.  I'm not golfing, going golfing or...just golfing.

BUT

The real question is do you game your irons or are you gaming your irons?

I do not go tennising, softballing, racquetballing, or golfing.

I do go skiing, running, swimming, cycling, boating, snowshoeing...that said, personally I never "go golfing," that just hurts the ears.  And "gaming" makes the skin crawl!

I go golfing and I play golf. I have also golfed. Sometimes I use clubs and on occasion they are weapons, WMD's or perhaps sticks. Having never used 'I'm gaming' I might have to start given some of the responses. If someone gets uptight about something like that I feel you have a civic responsibility to push the stick in a little further. You can tell it's in far enough when they make the same face as when you told them what your gaming.

You can sure tell it's winter time with stupid threads like this one. The sad part of of this thread is that people actually get serious and think it really makes a difference how they reference playing golf.

Well this is getting silly

First of all, yes, reference can be a verb, and referencing is an appropriate gerund.

Second, skiing, running, jogging, fishing, boxing, fighting, wrestling, skating...must we go on? That's not an argument, stop trying to make it one.

"Golfing" though?  Nope, still just wrong.

Referencing isn't a gerund.  Just 'cos it ends 'ing' doesn't make it a gerund.  It is just the present participle of 'reference' which isn't a verb in the first place and therefore doesn't exist.   A gerund is a verb acting as a noun, for example the word 'climbing' when used in 'climbing frame'.

Depends on the context.  Referencing is absolutely a gerund when used as such.  But this was all in good fun, not looking for a grammar debate in my golf forum, lol

It’s never actually occurred to me to give it any thought, and I hope never to think about it again.
