I feel for Spieth, not long ago he was challenging for majors, now’s he’s challenging just to make cuts and not yip short putts. Everyone use to talk about Spieth’s so called strong mental game, but this just goes to show how central sound technique is to results and how quickly poor technique will stripe anyway benefits the mental game offers.

Spieth candidly mentioned how mentally he was in a bad place last year, perhaps it’s time he invests in getting a new mental / swing coach before it’s too late.

Overwhelm is a key word here. Every person has a different tolerance level before they feel/become overwhelmed. I’m worried that with almost every aspect of Jordan’s game (technically, mentally, physically) up in the air with huge amounts of uncertainty and levels of distrust, this could be cause for real concern for Jordan and his career.

Usually every top tour player aims to improve their yearly results by focusing on slight but gradual improvements in one or many areas. Armed with the most in-depth performance analysis, usually the player with their coach and team create a yearly strategic plan to make those identified improvements. But normally this is building on the strong game foundations already developed and trusted since they were young. If Spieth’s looking to drastically change his whole swing philosophy while mentally being vulnerable and now showing physical signs of the yips… this is a recipe for possible disaster. Not saying it will be, but with the evidence of this downward spiral lasting for well over a year, and with no evidence of real improvement insight, this rings some alarm bells for me. Don’t forget, Spieth’s constant muttering, whining and blaming his caddie for almost an entire year when results weren’t going his way, these are clear signs of distress and overwhelm. 2019 could in more ways than one be absolutely pivotal to his entire career going forward.

Ps. Your name WidespeadPanic is aptly named for this post ;)

Love that the average length of Spieth's putts was less than two feet! Everyone saying that he is yipping but inside two feet he seems to be golden!!

Seriously though, huge concern for him. I hope he ends up like Langer and sorting it out.

Damon and Chantel hyping Spieth "woes" to the point of being annoying this morning on MD - another reason 4 is just too many on that set.

It's one round, first tournament of 2019, golf "experts" need to lighten way up on the guy and if they don't understand it's just his first round of his first tournament leading up to Augusta, then they really aren't "experts" (and I'd never accuse Damon and Chantel of being experts, but just dial back the anxiety level of the rhetoric).  And Chantel in their "little" fun segment jumping all over RDD "weren't you paying attention", lol.  Sure it was meant in jest, but wow she drove that meaningless point home.

Anyway, Spieth is a good guy, has some things to work out and probably could do without Hank Haney claiming he has tremors - wasn't Hank one of the first, along with Brandel, on the Tiger having chipping yips bandwagon? Well, Tiger didn't have the chipping yips.  I sincerely hope Jordan does not have the putting yips, but not being an expert that can spot tremors on TV like Hank, I'll just say I hope it isn't the case.

Give the guy a few competitive rounds!

So now Jordan allegedly has the"yips". Seriously? Every great player goes through periods when their putting sucks. Rory is not scaring anyone with the putter, Tiger not long ago looked lost on the greens, Phil runs hot and cold, and I don't think Adam Scott has ever fully recovered his stroke. There have been days where DJ couldn't putt it in the ocean from the beach. The list goes on and on......

But let's assume the worst.....say he follows Smylie right down the drain. He already has had a career anyone would kill for, has more money than he can spend, and has a great support group around him. Let's give him a break.

God I wish you guys who have never(?) experienced the yips would take just a tiny bit of time and talk to someone who has had them…

It is literally impossible to putt anywhere close to your best when you have the yips.

It has nothing to do with "cycles" or "periods" of "putting bad"....

The stroke certainly does not look great at the moment which is a concern. His best years and his best performances always seemed to be when his putting was on more than anyone else could hope to be on. Sure that he can get that sorted, I certainly hope that he does but it's shaky at the moment.

Maybe you guys saw it already, but Chez Reavie had 3 eagles today. That's not even the impressive part, what is really crazy is all 3 were hole outs on par 4s from 101 to 149 yards!!

Iím all for a well rounded life but when you hear Jordan has barely even played and has no feel for his swing it just shows you where heís at. Lots of success early on and now heís enjoying his life and golf is in the backseat. He fell into this even earlier than Rory but basically the same story. Both super talents who had early success but put that aside to enjoy the finer things in life. Nothing wrong with that, it is what it is.

Spieth has poor putting technique? Really?

It's a new year and Bubba and YJS are still whingers and extremely hard to watch

The constant talking to the ball is bad enough but screaming at the rough is taking it to a new level of annoying.  For the record I really like Spieth as a person, not especially a favourite golfer of mine, but the vocal aspect makes him very difficult to watch.

That said in recent years he provided some of the best entertainment a golf fan could ever want with his win at The Open.
