Influencer? Should we be wary of any Callaway feedback from “Influencers”? Are “Influencers” paid employees of
Callaway, or quietly compensated social media endorsers?

Did you even watch the video?

It was mostly interviewing the "influencers" about random stuff, much less to do with Callaway. I'd say out of all the people, Balionis was the most to talk about Callaway. I highly doubt EAL and crew were paid to come. More than likely they were invited, it was free and they were "encouraged" to film it and post on YT.

I can't stand the term "Influencer Event".  I understand what it is but it just seems smug and more applicable to some product that targets mindless teens, not golfers.  We don't need some wannabe elitist sounding event to try to sell golf clubs and although I will admit to NOT watching that video I can tell you that nobody in it will influence me into buying a golf club.

I expected more out of you Callaway, you aren't a cell phone company.

I am kind of in the same boat.  Makes it feel like they think we are the mindless masses.  Just waiting for an online personality to tell us what to do next.  I get the marketing behind hosting the event.  But, the name is a little condescending to the every day guy.

I watched the video and I don't think I recognized any of the people in it aside from the Callaway staffers.  The online personalities are all new to me.

On a side note.  I think the video was pretty well done and it looks like a fun event.

I don't.  I'm not sure how watching someone else hit a club would help me decide if it is right for me.  It isn't that hard to run over to the golf store and take a few swings.

Kudos on the video, that’s just cool.

No kudos to Callaway though. “Influencer event” lol they gonna start selling overpriced hoodies and shoes now too? Saw the guy rocking the Malbon jacket, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Callaway is trying to go all ”hypebeast” to get some buzz around this product. At any rate, kind of an epic fail trying to be cool.

I do.  And I have no issue with the event or the fact that people get sent clubs for the reviews for free.  I just don't like the connotation of influencer.  While, that is indeed what they are.  It's a minor complaint.  I was simply agreeing with Delmer.

I had a pretty similar negative response to this video as some of the above posters. This kind of marketing - and "internet culture" in general - really doesn't resonate with me. One might say that I am an "old." My general attitude is, "Who the **** cares? It's a golf club. You people look like idiots."

Some are being kind and saying that the "event" looked "fun," but this kind of jackassery is a scourge on human kind. It should be packaged up with Bob Parsons and the Kardashians and buried in a deep, deep hole, never to be heard from again. I hoped that we were done with this kind of crap in golf when TM cut their marketing budget.

That being said, I won't be surprised when Callaway sells a ton this year. Yet, they probably won't sell enough to make up for all of the money they have spent on marketing - see TaylorMade.

If more people were able to articulate themselves like this post instead of getting their thoughts and viewpoints from Dbag "influencers" from social media/youtube then I would have more optimism about the future of this country.  CALLAWAY - "Hey everyone, we used AI to develop this new epic driver and the Bachelor loves hitting it on the range so you should buy one......for $500.00."  Hilarious.  I also love the emcee of the event Amanda Balionis, the 20+ handicap telling everyone how Callaway makes the best clubs.  I understand she is paid to say that, but I am supposed to be "influenced" by her statements?

You should always take reviews with a grain of salt. Smart money would have it that at least some posters on the boards are OEM employees that do not disclose affiliations.

There are other companies that spend a fortune buying PGA Tour players. I see an event like this, and it's a refreshing new trend. I'd rather be entertained by some Surfer or running back saying hey, check this out. It's marketing.

Thanks for the video OP

Callaway has been aggressive going after new types of media over the past couple of years. Whether it's sponsoring podcasts, creating brand ambassadors/influencers from Instagram/Twitter personalities with high follower counts, etc, they've gone hard after a segment of the market that is not traditional and it's been quite successful. They're viewed as the "it" brand online in social media circles.

It helps that their products have backed up the hype in the last couple of years, obviously, but it's clear this strategy has played an important role in the positive brand perception they currently enjoy. While the discerning WRX member might not care about influencers pimping Callaway products, millions of social media followers do care. I can't fault Callaway for going this route.

The parallels to old TaylorMade that someone else drew up above are very interesting. Callaway's marketing machine has been quite active (in these non-traditional outlets) and they're spending a fortune on player endorsement deals. Add in the Travis Mathew purchase, their stake in TopGolf, the Ogio purchase, etc., and it's clear they're trying to become a lifestyle brand.

Yet, probably not enough to make up for all of the money they have spent on marketing - see TaylorMade.
I watched the video and I don't recall a Callaway employ saying , "go buy flash!". It's obviously Callaway campaigning using "celebrity" to try and peak your interests, but literally every single company does this in some way. Why Callaway gets more flack, I'm not sure. And I'm not even a Callaway fan... but if you are on Facebook... Instagram... Youtube.. Basically if you own a cell phone or a TV, a major OEM is using influencers to try and get you to go buy their stuff.

Not sure why people can't just view this video as some cool insider thing. How many times have you seen Sergio petting a little floofy dog? Cmon.

I really don't care who these influencers are.

It's like Hollywood telling us who to vote for & how to think. Screw that and that Bentley you rode in.

Give me a Xander with a posed 300+ yard drive showing the Epic Flash and then hoisting the winning trophy. Thats says way more.

the irony of this thread is pretty funny. Before anything was officially announced about Flash, guys were grabbing pitch forks and torches because one PGA tour player said he gained 4 mph Ball speed switching and all of the sudden that was the expected gain that everyone was supposed to see but wasn't so the product was garbage and only hype.  Also unless i missed it somewhere, the OP and worldwidegolf Shops are the only ones calling this an "influencer launch party".

Add in the Travis Mathew purchase, their stake in TopGolf, the Ogio purchase, etc., and it's clear they're trying to become a lifestyle brand.

pretty much expands their brand and reach to alot more potential clients.

This is what I agree with. Show me more of Sergio, show me some Michelle Wie, show me Xander explaining how he and Callaway designed the new Apex irons and how he has now won with them twice.

Don’t give me a running back and the host of the Bachelor telling me how great the driver and irons are.

People can't view this video as some cool insider thing because it's not, it's a commercial designed to look like a video of a cool insider thing.

Case in point.

They don't have to explicitly say "go buy Epic Flash." The call to action is inherent; it doesn't need to be said. If you can't tell that you are being "sold" to while watching this video, then your brain must be made of tapioca pudding.

Yes, OEM's have been using influencers to sell their clubs for eons. Most often they are Touring Pros. Just because they switch Touring Pros for "Everyday Joes (Janes)" isn't revolutionary. It's the same schill.

Finally, I wish I could view this video as a "cool, insider thing," but it isn't. It's a contrived piece of nonsense. Tapioca pudding anyone?
