I use a Superstroke grip and have always set it up conventionally with the flat surface facing away from my body so my thumbs lay on the flat part when gripped. As an experiment, I've put on a new grip and rotated it clockwise 90 degrees so the flat part now faces the palm of my right hand. The results so far show that it is going to stay that way!

It feels like my right hand is much better connected now and more in sync with the putter face. Before I often got a little bobble in my takeaway, but I'm finding the stroke is more fluid now without that little bobble. It also appears I'm getting the ball started better on the target line, with the aiming line rolling cleanly instead of a bit of a wobble. Distance control also seems improved; I am very right hand dominant and it seems this helps give better feel in that hand.

Frankly, I wasn't expecting to see much of a difference, so I was surprised to see that I really could see a difference and the improvements were measurable.

Funny, I was just thinking about doing that on one of my back up putters. My thought process was also along the lines that I’d have more control and feel of the putter face throughout my stroke.

I know that's sort of their concept, but the feeling was quite different to me. With the rotated SS grip, my fingers wrap around the curve part nicely leaving the only flat part against the palm providing the directional feeling. With the Flat Cat I sort of felt conflicting messages through my fingers and it didn't quite feel as comfortable.  That's just my perspective...it may be great for others

Yeah I know what you’re saying.
I once tried rotating a Flatso 90 degrees... and had my worst putting day of my life!
2 days ago, I took 3 different putters to the practice green.
One had a Flat Cat, 2nd had a Winn 1.18, last had a stock pistol.
I switch between conventional and left hand low.
The Flat Cat seemed to work better with conventional, while the other 2 grips seemed to work better with LHL.
I’m so confused now!
With so many grip shapes available, it’s a matter of finding a comfortable one and sticking with it... until it no longer works, like most things in golf!

My step dad did this with his putter grip last year.  He's a real believer in it.

Its because he has a claw/saw grip

Bryson does it with his armlock technique. I've seen some instructors on YouTube suggest it as well.

If it works for you do it up, who cares if it`s not "proper" methodology. After you smoke your buddies on the greens, they might try as well, so don`t worry about them poking fun of you at first.

Try the PalmBird grip. Fits more naturally in the palms.

I have a SS flatso 1.0 that I rotated this way.  With my claw grip it sits very comfortably in my hands.

  • I have an armlock with a long cork grip made up of two Salty grips spliced together rotated 90 degrees so the flat side is against my lead (left)forearm.  Really increases the stability for armlock.h
