Just wondering if anyone out there has a backup set of old blades they still play with for fun? Looking at spending $100 or so and thinking of playing them once in a while. Current irons are jpx 900

Jack Pearsall Regularly games his MacGregor PCB Tours. Probably once every fourth round? Itís the shaft iron head combo that is just so devastatingly fun to play. Such a great iron set for JP.

Youíre results would vary.

For blades he uses Hogan Apex II with apex shaft 4.
He really needs to be focused on the longer irons as they are not very friendly to less than really good strikes. Play them maybe 4 times a year...

Ive some MP32's I got for the same reason as you for a similar price.....I have never actually used them however just today I have been rotating 7 irons between G400, Callaway XR and MP 32 and hit them all well. I am going to take em out on course

Bought a set of MacGregor VIP Limited’s by Nicklaus last year (2-9) for £90. I think they are from the early 1970s complete with original Tourney Taper shafts which are like rebar. The lofts took some getting used to, 9-iron is 46*, and they really mess with my gapping at top and bottom but first time I took them out, I shot my handicap. They are great fun to play with and as easy to hit as a modern MB.

Well - "for fun" means every time I play so, yes, I do play my MP-32s all the time. Prior to this past season, I was playing with Ram Tour Grinds.

Keep us updated on how your experiment goes!

Most of my iron sets are blades, and most of the blade sets date from the 20th century.  Every day is "play old blades day."  :)

Assorted Ram Tour Grinds or Mizuno MS-11s are the usual irons of choice, with an occasional outing with Muirfields also in play.

I play forged blades all the time, new and old.

My classics irons alternate between Hogan Apex PCs, 73 Apex, and Apex IIs. All are great irons and they get used regularly.

I just picked up a slamming’ deal on the bay. Got a set of 4-P Mizuno MP-68s with ProjectX 5.5 shafts in excellent condition. Those are going into play next weekend.

My main clubs are MP14s. I also have a set of MP32s that I need to get regripped at some point. I got both off eBay for less than 150. Love my MP14s and for around $100 theyíre a steal. Iíll eventually get a back up set of MP14s and currently am thinking about getting a set with x100s because I seem to have a harder time hooking irons with x100s.

I have a set of MP14s that make their way back into my ďgamerĒ bag about every other year. I play great golf with them, but ultimately end up chasing something new.

Funny thing is that, if I had to choose one set to play for the rest of my life, I would be choosing between the 14s and a set of well-fitted Ping Eye 2s. Thereís just something about a timeless, no frills design when it comes to playing irons. Iím always drawn to the classics.

Backup set?  I have backups for the backups and spare backups. My kids have backup blade sets, and only one of them plays much.  I played Mizuno MS203s primarily for many years but have MP29s, MS11s, several sets of TZoid ProII irons, along with a nice set of TP19s.  And Mp62s, 63s and 30s, none of which technically fit the definition. I think there is a Mac Combo set down there in the basement somewhere as well.

MP29s would be a nice match or pairing vis-a-vis the JPX900s.

1972 Apex - Haven't gamed them, grips are trash but original so not sure if I just want them as bling or game.

1979 Cameos - Played them once or twice, easy to hit

1981 Directors - I gamed these for 3 seasons

1988 Redlines - I gamed these for 2 seasons because Hogan!

MP-32 - This is my third set of these I just like them and can't figure out why I keep selling them.

Wow. That is just such a gorgeous club. Makes all the new tech look ridiculous.

It seems so easy to me to make a clean, functional, and beautiful golf club. The 681 were almost there. If they’d take the “forged” stamp off, it’d be pure.

The í81 directors; how did they play? I think they might be the sleekest design blade Iíve ever seen, but Iíve also seen pictures showing fairly strong offset. How do they compare to the more popular/known Hogans (ie Apexes)
