Anyone had any success coming up with a good golf related experiment? Last year we tested golf ball dimples and how fast they traveled through water for aerodynamics. It was ok, but not all that great. Struggling this year for something. Itís for 6th grade AGP.

Thanks,

What about setting up a wind tunnel (fan and smoke machine inside a box with a viewing hole) to show the effect of dimples on airflow around a ball? High n low pressure, the turbulence behind etc.

????

Could do a few different balls like a really worn range ball, a new golf ball and maybe different shape dimples (Callaway hex vs traditional)

Maybe something in the agronomy field?

That's funny. Thanks folks. We couldn't come up with anything golf related that would get approved and not be a massive headache so went with a cooking related experiment. My son loves golf and cookies, so if the golf topic didn't work we planned to fall back on the cookie idea. He is pleased.

My son did the Galileo's demonstration of gravity by dropping golf ball and ping pong ball at same height.

Another cool experiment is density, mass and buoyancy by making golf balls float.
Start out with distilled water, and keep adding salt and watch it float.  If you find the equilibrium, you should be able to get it float and sink simply by adding bit more water or salt.

My third grader did one on the affect of temperature on the bounce.  Kept a group of balls at room temperature, put a group in the freezer and heated a group in boiling water.  Dropped the balls from each group, measured the height, and took the average.  Pretty easy.

I did that too back in the day. Back when there was 80,90 & 100 compression golf balls.
