I picked up a set of FG 17s. Obviously these were designed in a different era, so is the modern ball ok with the older irons? Should I use something softer and spinny?? Im a high speed/spin player who uses TP5X.

They will work just fine.  They are likely a club weaker loft wise though, so don't be alarmed when you have to pull 9 iron where you used to pull PW and so on through the set.

I am currently playing a set of 76 Wilson Staff blades (the predecessor to the FG 17's) with the Bridgestone BXS ball and they are superb.

FG-17 irons aren't really older clubs...I think they are really timeless and match up with any of today's blades.  Today's golf balls work perfectly with the 35+ years old Wilson model FG-17 irons.

DR Block nailed it. I play any modern ball with any of my old Macgregor or Hogan blades. Now on persimmon woods I do use a softer ball aka Srixon Soft Feel , Bridgestone Treo Soft or Wilson Duo. The Lady Bridgestone is also a great ball for me with persimmon
