  • This A.W. Tillinghast design sits on hills in the middle of Swope Park in Kansas City. A municipal course managed by Orion Management Systems, it offers amazing view of the Kansas City skyline, typical Tillinghast guarded greens that reward good shots by funneling the ball toward the hole. Oak Hollow GC in High Point, NC would be my (first) entry into this thread (great thread topic by the way).  It's a Pete Dye design that has a lot of the unfair Dye slopes in the greens, with the normal Pete Dye risk/reward setup on several holes.  I played it with some cousins during my family reunion and thought it was fantastic.  We normally play Starmount Forest (I'm a ClubCorp member), Grandover, or Bryan Park (both have 36 holes and both are fine facilities), but I think I want to make Oak Hollow my preferred course when I go to visit my NC fam.  For the price, it just can't be beat.  I think we paid $40 on a Saturday morning (8am tee time) and it was definitely worth more than that with several holes on a large lake and excellent fairways and greens.

http://www.oakhollowgc.com/

I do really like the layout but would love if this course changed to Bermuda greens. Playing at 8am is ok but later in the day the greens are pretty beat up in the summer. But they got to keep them long and watered.

It was a pretty nice crowd out there.  I felt like, due to its location and some of the guys I saw playing the course, it’s not as appreciated as it should be.  You’re right that with the right type of grass for the greens, it could be a MONSTER of a great course.  I still plan to play it again.  It was fun and very challenging.  I definitely remember many of the holes after only playing it once compared to both Bryan Park courses and both Grandover courses, both of which I can only remember a few holes between the 72.

Not many in my area, but Moffett Field for $38 on a weekday and $54 on a weekend.   A military golf course that opened up to the public a few years back.  If you're in the military, its $25 on a weekend.  Retired military is $33.   Its pretty cool to see a big hanger behind a green and landing lights to help planes land in the fairways.

A brief description of why you think it's a hidden gem (and please include a photo if you have one!):
Sitting right outside of Chicago in northwest Indiana is the hidden gem known as lost marsh. This course will test all aspects of your game. See pictures below holes 1-5 have water in play. In addition to the water winds usually whip  around 25-40 mph so you better know how to control your trajectory and play draws and fades. The back nine is tighter where you have to deal with many trees so accuracy is key. The course has many views Chicago to the northwest and the rugged industrial views all around. If you're in the Chicago area I highly recommend this course.

$38 rate, but you need $100 in golf balls to get through the first 4 holes. Always in great shape, but some pretty 1quirky holes

  • A brief description of why you think it's a hidden gem (and please include a photo if you have one!): This place feels like Bushwood Country Club as soon as you step on the first tee.  Fairways are wide, giving everyone a chance to find their ball and greens are fair yet challenging.  The par 3s are long and the 4s and 5s give lots of variety.  It's an old school golf course with lots of charm that has seen a great resurgence in the last couple of years.

  • A brief description of why you think it's a hidden gem (and please include a photo if you have one!): Renovated by Gil Hanse's Team in 2013.  Just a fun course to play.  It is on top of Monteagle Mountain and so it stays a little cooler up there than in the valley below.  (Guy in pro-shop said about 8* cooler is a good rule of thumb.)  It is only nine holes but is worth going around a second time.  It is only about twenty minutes from Sweeten's Cove as well.  You can play your early nine at Sweeten's then go up the mountain to play the nine at Sewanee to beat the afternoon heat.  The view from #3 green is pretty awesome.  Very walkable course despite being on a mountain.

  • A brief description of why you think it's a hidden gem (and please include a photo if you have one!): Stone Canyon Golf Club is the only Greg Norman Signature Design Course in the Midwest. Stone Canyon opened for play in 2009 and received immediate recognition as one of the "Best New Courses You Can Play” by Golf Magazine. In 2012, Stone Canyon was once again recognized by Golf Magazine and named one of the Top 3 Best Public Courses in Missouri.
The layout at Stone Canyon will provide guests with a truly memorable golf challenge with Norman’s signature design traits that include closely mown green surrounds, creative bunkering and landscape accents. Guests will enjoy the rolling topography and dramatic long views towards downtown Kansas City to the west. The real star is the setting, where rock walls and stone outcroppings are integrated into the layout. Most memorable is the 381-yard, par-4 3rd hole, which concludes with a green in an amphitheater of rocks.

Best public course in the KC area. If they'd fix/update the bunkers it would be perfect. Tough track!

Plus 1,000,000 on Swope.  It's so good and so underrated.  I have played it at least 100 times (if not more) and talk about it all the time.  If I ever win the lottery, I have a vision to transform it into a US Open level course...

A state by state look at the courses with interesting architecture that cost less than $100.

In addition to these, a cool course in Richmond, VA is Belmont, GC

Belmont Golf Course, located in Henrico County, Virginia, features an 18-hole PGA Championship golf course. In 1949, the course was host to the PGA Championship won by Sam Snead.

I think Wildhorse deserves all the accolades it gets. But I really don’t think it “hidden”. Normally resides on GD best affordable list (if you give any credence to GD), and here, it is very well know and acclaimed.

I’m one of the few here who isn’t a big Bayside fan.

I really like The Orchards in Egg Harbor, WI.  Fun layout, conditions are excellent,  and it suits my eye.  Not many go to Door Co. to play golf, but if the old lady drags you up there, bring the sticks and go play!

Kansas City has an embarrassing number of good public/semi-private courses that are extremely affordable...too many actually for the amount of players.  Nearby swope is Hillcrest (Donald Ross) and I play that regularly for $30 to $40 with cart (vastly prefer it over swope which is super short for modern golf).  Stone Canyon is a fun modern course but there are many more that i'd say are 'hidden gems' if that is the standard.  Sycamore Ridge?  Staley Farms?  Tiffany Greens?  Ironhorse?  I enjoy also playing Drumm Farm, Falcon Lakes/Ridge, Deer Creek etc...  were spoiled here.

  • George Dunne National - part of the Illinois Forest Preserve golf system
  • Oak Forest, IL (about 30 miles South of downtown Chicago)
  • $49 walking on weekdays during peak season, but Fall rates are $39 w/GPS cart
  • https://georgedunne....reservegolf.com
  • Really fun tree-lined parkland layout with some interesting holes that cover rolling terrain that you don't find in many Chicago-area golf courses.  Coming in at 7262 yards and 75.4/142 from the tips, Dunne offers 4 sets of tees that will provide a good test for most golfers.  The course gets a lot of play, but it's always in great condition.

I was recently home for a wedding and stumbled across this one:

Course Name: Majestic Springs
City, State: Wilmington, Ohio
Price Range: I paid about $25 for a Friday morning/afternoon in October.  Current weekend price seems to be $35 (maybe higher in season?) for 18 and cart.
Course Website: https://www.bestgolf...ent.com/ms-home
A brief description of why you think it's a hidden gem (and please include a photo if you have one!):

I expected it to be empty given the location, time/day, weather, etc, but there was a healthy group of regulars out.  Played solo and never waited, though.

The course is off the beaten path and has a country feel (open with only few trees in the interior) with a creek running around a number of holes and a few ponds.  I thought it was in great shape when I played, although the greens were a bit rough since they had just been aerated.  Some great contours to the greens and fairways, and beautiful scenery in the fall.  No two holes really played the same and most required some consideration of placement off the tee.  Back tees are around 6500yds, which is good for me...anything more and I'm toast.  Between finishing on some high notes, having a peaceful round, and getting to be a bit creative on each hole I had a very memorable time. This will definitely be on the top of my list when I'm back home.

Course Name: Shepherd's Crook
City, State: Zion, IL
Rates: Weekday $30 walking Weekend: $45 walking
Course Website: http://www.shepherdscrook.org/
Brief Description: This course is about an hour north of Chicago near the Wisconsin border and it doesn't have a driving range which could be why it doesn't get a lot of play. Fantastic Keith Foster design, extremely walkable, fantastic conditions and challenging yet fun design.

Amazing course. Played it in August when i was back up north. It is 45 at twilight walking. It is 65 prime time. Sucks it is getting more expensive. It used to be 25 to walk when i was in high school and college lol

It's a really good layout.  No range and it's right next to a landfill so if the wind is blowing the wrong way it's miserable.  If you put this course in a resort area it would cost $180+.  Worth playing if you're in the area but Thunderhawk right down the road is better, however, a little more expensive.

Thanks for the comparison to Thunderhawk - finally got out there this year and loved it.  Been wanting to play Shepherd's Crook and Stonewall Orchard (I don't get up north all that much).  Would love to do a 2-day north burbs mini-golf trip next year and play 36 a day: those 3 and find another - maybe Pine Meadow?.

I play out in Lake Geneva in the summer so I don't play a lot down in IL but I like Stonewall Orchard and Ruffled Feathers equally.  I think Thunderhawk is probably the best test but Ruffled Feathers is a good Pete Dye course.

Bull Valley in Woodstock is always on the cusp of allowing public play so I would check with them next year.  They were still private this year but I've played it a handful of times and it's worth it just to see how hard a golf course can play.  It's 77.2/151 from the tips.

My favorite value in Texas:
  • The Wilderness at Lake Jackson
  • Lake Jackson, TX
  • $32-$55 (but I've only ever played it for ~$40)
  • This Jeff Brauer design is a RIDICULOUS sleeper with perhaps the most memorable green sites I've ever played. The par 5 7th plays to a kidney-shaped green that's nearly 70 yards long and features a few different plateaus. The long par 3 16th—one of my favorite holes anywhere—is a classic Biarritz with a 5-foot-deep swale cutting right through the middle. Honorable mention goes to the short par 4 11th which properly balances risk with reward and goads players to bite off as much as they can (a personal pet peeve is the overly-penal short 4 that makes it stupid to do anything but lay up).

A course I often visit in Northern MN is also a Jeff Brauer design, is also called The Wilderness and also has a biarritz green.  If I could play only that course for the rest of my life, I'd be perfectly happy. Although this one, The Wilderness at Fortune Bay, is usually closer to a $80-100 green fee, but worth every penny and then some.
