I'm always looking for new pieces of software to play with, and on the windows mobile devices they've been few and far between lately. Then this evening I found FreeCaddie and thought I'd look into it a little more. Obviously since I found it tonight, I haven't given it a try, but thought I'd pass on the find to other since it looks like it may have some potential.

Personally I don't really believe in relying on GPS measurements, but this could be a great supplement to anyones game that already has a GPS enabled windows mobile device.

The courses are limited at this time and the truth is you'll probably have to add your own course, but thats the easy part.

Like I said, I just wanted to pass this on, and possible get some reviews from anyone thats tried it. Personally I don't have any golf planned for weeks, but this may give me a reason to sneak out for nine.

I downloaded it last week and plotted out my home course myself.. it works great ...its free...and best of all you dont need to worry about forgetting your skycaddie/rangefinder at home, charging it, or losing it as it is built into your phone!! I use it on a Sprint Mogul phone and its great!!!

I have been using freecaddie for the last month and have mapped about 6 or 7 courses I Play regularly in the Dallas area. It is a neat software and I run it on my WM5 phone. I use it with a 51-channel MTK chipset BT receiver (9 Sats is the norm with these). I like the simple interface of the Freecaddie. The nicer touch is the ability to do the mapping on the Web site. This setup is not for the tech challenged though unless you have a GPS integrated phone.

I've been using freecaddie for a couple of months now on my BlackJack II and I love it. I was playing with a guy the other day who had a Callaway (Nikon) range finder and he was impressed that I knew the yardages before he even got a chance to pull it out. On the first few holes he still pulled out his range finder, only to mumble to himself the exact yardages to the flag that I got on my phone. I think by the 4th or 5th hole we just used my phone.

I installed Freecaddie on my Samsung Epix and played at a local golf course this last weekend. Overall performance was awesome, except for a couple of holes where the readings were off. Loved the measure last shot feature - was able to put numbers against my better drives of the day. Will continue to try it out at other local golf courses and may upgrade to the FreeCaddie Pro if consistently reliable.

I think this is a great idea for us golfers. My question is does it use the internet when you are using this software. I have been thinking about a smart phone with GPS and Wi-Fi. I would only be using it at work and at home so I do not need the internet through the cell system. Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks

You do not need a data connection for Freecaddie to work, it is true GPS only. I did upgrade to the Freecaddie pro and so far I like it a lot.

Have been using free caddie for a couple of weeks now and have found it to be a great piece of software. Mapped my local course's roughly when I first installed it. Eager to get it on and out there, found it still to be within decent tolerance's. Will tweak my course data for continued trail with a view to upgrade to pro version shortly.

Does anyone know if this will work on a Blackberry? I know it says windows moblie, but it goes on to say this...

"Both FreeCaddie and FreeCaddie Pro run on Windows Mobile Smartphones or Pocket PCs with either built-in GPS or support for bluetooth and a separate Bluetooth GPS receiver. "

I have GPS enabled, etc... Just wondering.

They are working on Blackberry and Symbian Java based versions. I e-mailed them about it and they confirmed they were building new versions, and sent me this link to keep an eye on development;

It goes without saying, but I will anyway. :)

The main knock on any iphone-based GPS is that it sucks the bejeezus out of the battery and you can't get thru a 5 hour round on one charge.

With a windows mobile based GPS, when the battery starts getting low, just replace it with a freshly charged backup.

Just wanted to throw that out there for those of you in that "iphone vs. alternative" debate, since it's a big negative on the iphone that I feel doesn't get discussed enough.

Thanks Kevin,

I have both an iPhone and WM (HTC Touch HD & Touch Cruise II).

I find the WM devices work better than the iPhone when it comes to accuracy and generally the GPS functionality in the WM devices seems to have an edge on the iPhone.

I am not saying that the Freecaddie application does not work on the iPhone - I just find it better implemented on the WM devices.

(And you're absolutely right about the battery issue).
