Missed an 8 footer on 18 for birdie and a 79 (Iíve never broken 80)... what are your heartbreak stories?

Not sure if this is the right sub forum but today, I had a putt at 79. This is a huge number for me, as Iíve never broken 80.

The putt was a straight 8 footer, uphill. I just missed the edge and went 2 feet past. Easily knocked in my frustrated, one handed, swipe for a par and a personal best 80. Iíve shot 81 several times but this is the first time Iíve had a putt at 79 (Iím also frustrated that I had three double bogeys on the card). I even made a video, in case I made it (in hindsight, that was dumb, of course). Since my daughter was born 3 years ago, finding the time to golf has been tough. Add in a another daughter during that time and my game has been dreadful, at times. This year, my wife has encouraged (allowed) me to play every other week and the results are beginning to pan out.

Anyhow, part of this is a rant and part is back slapping boast. What are your heartbreakers on the course?

Our closing hole on one of our 18's is a 210-230yd par 3 with a crazy green. The amount of times i have bogeyed that hole to finish off a great round and ruin a number is probably too many to list.

My heart breaks for you mister but I can tell you your mistake. You knew your score.

Write down a number after each hole and then let it go. Yes, the day you break 80 ( and you will do so sooner if you do as I suggest) you'll have a good idea that you're playing well as you approach the final holes and you'll have a snense that you might have the 70s in your sights but that general sense won't freeze you up like a specific score will.

I'd love to see you try it so I can give with a WRX like!

Interestingly, up until a few rounds ago, I never kept a cumulative total. I just wrote down my score and added things up at the turn and the end of the round. Honestly, Iíve felt like knowing my score has kept me focused on the last 5 or holes. Itís tough to say because today was possibly the only time in 20+ years that I forced myself to remain ďhyperĒ focused over every shot. Most times Iím just out there having fun, swinging the club and repeating. Within the last 10 years (before kids) I played to a 9.7 index. Today reminded me of those days but the difference being that, back then, I could autopilot an 82-84. Now, I had to concentrate and grind out this 80 but I have hope.

Congratulations on your new low!

As an 8, shooting 79 is like kissing a super model...vs...kissing your grandmother for an 80.

Good luck, I predict a sub 80 round soon for you.

Wish I could play and not know my position to par!   I need to have some mental control therapy....?

I know the feeling but you will get there. I had a major collapse back in May at caverns cc virgina. I play to a 9.7 and have shot mid 70s numerous times with lowest being 76. Well this day Iím 1 over thru 15, I proceed to get in my own head and finish With a quad, triple quad , to finish +12 lol. Frustrating but sadly not surprised.

Itís funny I try and take one shot at a time but still somewhere in between I lose it and shot my normal high 70s to mid 80s. Sometimes higher

Ouch. I donít feel so bad, taking a par on 18. I will say, after a double bogey 6 on 17, I was proud that I hit three good shots on the par 5 18th to give myself the chance. Thereís also something to be said about going out in 42 and coming back with a 38. Good day, overall, but I canít help but think of what could have been (76?).

Since the missed putt was your focus iʻll give you two.
Years ago i i hit a 7 iron out of a fairway bunker from 150 yds to 4 ft behind a pin that left me a very slick down hill right to left breaker.
It was on 18 and in front of 100 guys watching from the clubhouse veranda. I was totally calm and knew this putt. Read it, smoothed it and missed it. It was for the 1st Flt in the City Amatuer and i blew the 3~way playoff
I had a similar putt on the 19th hole to win a club championship match play tournament, i remember being so nervous over that putt i almost threw up, drained it perfect speed center cut,
Point is if you play this great game the rest of your life youʻll have plenty of chances to screw it up and shine. Enjoy the walk.

Hang in there.  Overall, well played.  Cut the double bogies and you'll easily be in the 70s maybe sniffing mid 70s.  You got one milestone now get the other!

My personal best is 70, many times and several with a chance to par or birdie the last hole for a 69.  Every single time I either choke or not complete the task.  Yes, it's mental.  I know once that's broken more sub 70s would occur.  Now I'm not good enough to break 70 but I'm working on it.  Maybe one day.

So last year im on the 18th tee knowing if I par I beat my personal best by 2...if i bogey, no big deal, still shooting my Personal Best, no pressure lol.

Smoke my drive.
Hit my approach well but off line and I am a maximum of 5 feet off the green pin high.
Hit my chip fat but rolls on.

of course 3 putt for a double bogey lol.

I've since destroyed that milestone mark but still, I remember the hurt.

Keep swinging.

Last year in US Mid Am qualifying on my 18th hole I hit a perfect PW that hit 3ft pin high and bounced over the back of the green. I ended up making bogey and going to a playoff with 5 people for 1 spot and lost after 3 holes. So yah.

It was the first time I had ever broken par. I was 2 under coming to 18. I hit a good drive and stiffed my approach to about 2 1/2 feet. I was so excited to just shoot a sub par round (70) that I rushed my stroke and missed the putt that could have had me shooting in the 60's!

Senior year of high school, i'm 5 over through 14. I know i'm playing well but am doing a good job not adding up scores and just focusing on making pars and whatnot until one of my playing partners looks at his scorecard.

"hey man, if you par out you'll shoot a 77!"

In a local club championship about a week or so ago I had played the front 9 at 41 (not great, mistakes happen, but still a good chance at a 70's because of a relatively easy back nine). I began playing stellar on the back nine, nearly had a hole in one, but none-the-less I was 1 over par on the back going into my tee shot on 18. I send the tee shot just into the right rough about 130yds out. I take a few practice swings and set up to my ball...in the middle of my back swing my dad says "hey, wait!" (because another player in my group was taking practice swings near his ball and he thought that they were going to hit at the same time as me) and it completely caught me off guard and I sent my second shot 15 yards right of the green...I can still go up and down right? nope, i get on the green and 3 putt for an 80 instead of what could have been a 77...needless to say my dad was very apologetic and is probably scared to watch me golf any time soon haha

I was thrilled the first time I broke 80 was in a "scratch" league as the "B" player (really the "C" player compared with the other guys) at a course that is tougher than the one I usually play.  Thought the floodgates had opened, lol, but it took a long time to break 80 on "my" easier course.  17th or 18th were usually the culprits for a variety of reasons.

Keep at it, it's only one more stroke, then once in awhile its two or three more strokes, etc. Then you expect it! If your handicap service (or you) tracks your individual hole scores and provides reports look at the holes that are costing you strokes, you might be surprised which ones!

Anyway, any milestone should be celebrated and if you aren't talking what might have been you aren't a golfer!!!

Congrats on the 80!  Best ever for me is 81. Yes I did miss my putt for 79, and then didn’t take my time and make the come backer for 80. Still haven’t beaten it and obviously still haven’t shot in the 70s. Someday. Maybe.

Missed a birdie putt (on the high side, good roll) on the 18th to shoot even par.

Never broken par for 18.

Even going into 18, shortish par 5.  Drive it to the ideal position, 170 to clear the water, so I take a little extra, not wanting to come up short with my 175 club. Hit the green, have about a 40 footer - turns out it's impossible, catches a downslope and I have 15 feet back up the hill to shoot -1.  Comes up about an inch short.

Tap in for 72 to tie my lowest round.

I'd met her via a dating site, we were getting on really well for 6 months then she dumped me because of a dream she had.

Last October I was playing in a multiple day tournament.  After a pretty poor first round... I went into the second day and played really well.  At the time... I was averaging about 86 or so for most rounds.  My goal was to get inside the top 30 of a tournament that had over 200 entrants in the flight.

My son was walking the course that day watching the round.  I had stayed really focused all day and got to my final hole, a par 5, at +8.  I kinda knew where I stood at that point but wasn't really thinking about it.  My lifetime best score was 81, which I had scored several times throughout the year.  Literally 10 seconds before I'm ready to hit my tee shot, my son is standing behind the tee box and tells me if I birdie this hole I'd shoot a 79.

I proceeded to top my tee shot... blast a 7 iron through the fairway... smother a 4 iron that still rolled into the center of the fairway... and then blade a sand wedge 30 yards over the green en route to a closing triple bogey for an 83.

I finally broke 80 in May of this year.  I shot 77 on my home course... then posted a 79 a month after that and a 76 just 3 weeks later.  They seem to come in bunches.  Keep at it!

I've had one sub-par round at my course (4 under) at this time and I'm sitting on 18 green with a 20 foot birdie putt for a 1 under round. I've never shot even par on my course and I'm arguing with myself whether or not to go for it or to lag it. I go for it and blow it 10 feet past. Miss the next putt for a 1 over par round (something I've now done 4 times). That hurt my feelin's.

I must have shot 80 seven or eight times before ever shooting in the 70ís. A friend told me Iíd never break 80 by shooting 79, it would be something like 75 or 76 on a day I was playing so good I couldnít screw it up.

Sure enough when it happed it was a 76. Just an out of body experience the whole day.

Since then Iíve had a 75, a 78 and a couple 79ís. Funny, donít think Iíve had another exact 80 since I finally broke through;-)

Everything has its drawbacks, as the man said when his mother-in-law died, and they came down upon him for the funeral expenses.

OP, I did the exact same thing Saturday, except from 5 or 6 feet.  But like yours: straight uphill, missed left, etc.  LOL.
I stood on the 18th tee knowing a birdie would get me 79.  I don't make many birdies.  But I crushed the drive, and hit the wedge right below the hole.  And I had been draining putts out of my mind all round. Piece of cake now, right???  Hahahaha.

I have broken 80 several times, but it still puts pressure on me.  I wish I had not known the score.  Usually I don't do it with a 79, I shoot more like 77, so the pressure is off by the last couple of holes.  Guess what I'm saying is that it's easier to close out a 77 than a 79.  Although...

One time I needed a double or better on a par 5 to break 80.  Of course I got a triple.

A couple months ago I missed a 7 footer for par on the 9th hole to shoot 29 which has been a personal goal of mine for a long time. Iím still thrilled to shoot 30 but I really, really wanted that 29.

I have always wanted to shoot 18 birdies in one round.

The closest I got was birdies on first three holes then missing a 35' putt for birdie on the 4th hole. Broke my heart and I didn't make any more birdies that round.
