I have been playing with the 915D3 for a while now and came across a good deal on the 917D2 with the diamana 70 shaft so I thought I would try it out for a while.  I figured it should be more forgiving allowing fewer misses and just to try something new like we all do.  After trying multiple different settings and configurations I realized I cannot hit this club consistent at all.  With the 915D3 my shot is a rather consistent slight fade (power fade I guess).  With the 917D2 I seemed to slice, sky ball, and hit the top of the club face.  I felt very uncomfortable swinging the club and it felt dead where the ball seemed to fly off of the 915D3. I am a 12 handicap with a Ss of about 115mph.  Maybe I should look for the 917D3 head?  Anyone else have this experience?

Never hit the d2 versions, but had the 910, 915 and now 917. Loved the 910 absolutely hated the 915 and currently gaming the 917.

I'd say it is more the shaft contributing to your inconsistency.  Do you have the exact same shaft in the D3??

Of all the Titleist drivers i have ever owned... the 917 D3 was the least accurate and consistent of them all. The 915 D2 was the absolute best for me. My son's 917 D2 was pretty sweet too. Ultimately i was disappointed in the 917 D3 and it lasted just over 5 months in the bag. The Callaway may be just a fill in until the TS line shows up in the fall.
What's In The Bag This Week:

Rogue Sub Zero 10.5 deg driver with TS Atmos Blue 6 (45 inch)
Rogue Sub Zero 3 wood 15 deg with TS Atmos Blue 7 (42.75 inch)

Mizuno MP18 Blades 4-PW with PX LZ
Mizuno T7 50 and 54 deg wedges with PX LZ
Cameron Newport 3 @ 34 inch

Have had 2 910d2, skipped 913, a 915d2 and now game 915d3. Have hit the 917d2.
The 917 feels a little bulkier than the 915 for some reason. And the d2 in general just felt too big after the 910.

Are you swinging them at the same shaft length?  Sounds like you're hitting the 917 all over the face which should have nothing to do with the head itself.  Now, I won't discount the 915 d3, it was a good one, but the 917D2 shouldn't be anymore difficult to hit if everything else matches up.  I will say, I did have much better luck with the 917 D3 than the D2, but I think it mostly came down to lowering spin.

So I've not had the inconsistency issues with the 917D2 that you spoke too; however, I will say that the D2 heads in general do not match up well for me.  They are spin monsters for me.  915D3 is a great driver and I think I hit it better than the 917D3 but like I said I was not getting inconsistent strikes, it just had to do with the D2 head spinning too much for me to maximize distance.

The new TS3 is likely the only Titleist head that will unseat your 915D3, in my opinion.

I tried the 917D2 with my old shaft and had the same issues. Wonder if its just too much spin.

Skyballs and hitting the top of the club face...doesn't sound like it is the club to me.

Looking for other explanations other than those listed above, the D2 will have a shallower face than the D3, that might contribute to you catching it higher on the clubface.

i replaced a 915d2 with a 915 d3 same shaft and the results were night and day, the d2 head miss would spin high right OOB, the D3 is longer, straighter and sounds better
