My wife says she would like to take me to a PGA tour tournament for the weekend.  Just trying to see what are the most exciting tournaments to attend. This will be our very first tournament. She has only one condition. It cannot be a major. What are your thoughts?

Scottsdale might scare you away from the pro game.  I would try something that has the big name players at a course good for spectating.  #1 might be Sawgrass, since the course was built with spectators in mind.  The move to March next year will be cooler weather too.

I’d start with, Who’s your favorite player or one you’ve always wanted to see in person?

The Florida swing is nice because typically the best players will play, the Honda for sure (home event for many) API (because it’s Arnold’s event and the 3 year exemption). Both in my opinion are easy walks with lots of concessions, weather is typically pretty temperate I haven’t been to one where I can remember it being ridiculously cold or hot. Travel is easy as well if your not local Palm Beach Intl and Orlando Airports are easy to navigate and get in and out of

Phoenix Open is fun, but thatís a level of crazy (especially Saturday) that is difficult to prepare yourself for.

Most exciting and fun? Hole 16 at the Waste Management Open (Phoenix Open) at TPC SCottsdale. Drop the money and get tickets in a suite, you won't regret it. Too many people with grounds passes on Saturday in my opinion.

The Heritage at Harbour Town is a great time.  It is a week long cocktail party.  Easy golf course to walk, and youíre at Hilton Head in April, which is a great time of year to be there.

Phoenix Open is much less busy on a Thursday if you just want to see some good golf and see the pros play. Definitely, recommend a Greenskeeper or similar ticket for busier days. There are several levels which can be bought individually from ticket resellers online.

Unless you love huge crowds I would avoid the Phoenix.

Are you restricted to a certain part of the country?

Players is great, as mentioned above it was built for the spectator in mind.  Everything there is about the fan experience.  Course is easy to walk.  Also, next ear it will be played in March, should be awesome weather that time of year in No Fla.  Iíve also been to Wells Fargo in Charlotte several times. Another easy to walk course and a top notch tmnt on a top notch course with great field.

Why does she have a condition that it can't be a major? Unless it's the Masters you can get tickets for reasonable unless you wait til they're sold out. I'd pick the US Open at Pebble.

Picking based on your favorite players is risky. I'd start with picking a few courses you really want to see...

Then, I'd look at what cities they are in for hanging out at night. If the weekend of Match Play weren't so boring for a spectator, I'd say go there and have fun in Austin.
  • Riviera would be an idea...hang out in LA, see an incredible course you're unlikely to access otherwise, usually a very strong field plays there.
  • The Players gets you to TPC Sawgrass, and a top-notch field. I'm not that familiar with the Jax area but have heard it can be fun.
  • Wells Fargo in Charlotte is usually a well-run event with good names on an exclusive course. I enjoy Charlotte when I visit, plus maybe you could rent a car and swing by Charleston or Savannah for a few nights (3-4 hour drive) to extend the trip.

Also...Tournament of Champions in Maui isn't a major...just saying...

RBC Heritage would be my vote. It was not overly crowded when I went on Saturday last year, and they do a great job of managing shuttles and logistics. Depending on where you're coming from you could spend time in Savannah and Hilton Head. As others have said, April is a great time to be in that area.

I've got two contenders and a dark horse.  The two contenders are the popular choices - Waste Management Open and the Players.  I've never been to the WMO, but it certainly seems like the biggest party and liveliest social scene if that's important to you.  The Players may not be as rowdy as the WMO, but having used to live in Jax, it's pretty much the social event of the year there.  Great course (for golf and spectating) and great crowds, but you can also find secluded pockets around the course.

I may be a bit biased for my dark horse candidate, but I'll throw the Zurich into the ring.  It can't compete with the "excitement" of a WMO or Players, but the team format is fun.  The crowds are small which provides you a lot of access.  And while the WMO and the Players are more exciting tourneys, IMO neither can compete with the whole package that NOLA has to offer - especially when you throw in the fact that the first weekend of Jazz Fest always runs concurrently with the Zurich.  If you're looking to go to the tourney just one day, NOLA will offer a lot to do the rest of the weekend.

All depends what kind of experience you're looking to have.
