Temperatures of almost 100 and heat index of 105-110 today here in NY

My daughter is staying indoors

How hot is too hot to play/practice?

I wanted to play today but man it's pretty stinking hot for us Northern folk here in Northeastern Ohio. Dawn patrol yesterday morning and the humidity was rough. Today is next level! 95 degrees right now with heat index of 102, that's Georgia and Florida hot. Defintely not conditions we are conditioned to handle. Hard, dry and fast however is a welcome change for us considering the norm is usually soft, wet and lush.

Been at RWB regional for for two days in Pinehurst,95 , index gotta be over 100.  Hard on a caddie. Kids never complained though.

When I was a kid it was never too hot.   With the state and US Junior approaching here many of my juniors are practicing 4-8hours a day in preparation.  I give lessons in it every day all summer except when Iím on the road.

Heat index had been, is, and will continue to be 100+.  I play, but take a cart. I know the purists out there denigrate carts, but they do have their uses, and for me this is one of them.

We have quite a few of those days per year where I live but do try to get out early.  If not you just find your way from shady tree to shady tree.  Our US Kids and local PGA tournament programs will drive around with those giant 5 gallon Gatorade jugs on the back of a cart for the kids full of ice cold water.  Also, if you don't have a Mission Cooling Towelyou're going to suffer.

I was there as well with my daughter and it was hot. I think I went through three Gatorades today.

Really anything below 98 you are ok just drink plenty of water and take lots of breaks.  Just make sure you have shade  You may be uncomfortable but you can be out there for a long time.

If it is above 100 you need to be careful. You need water shade and place to get into ac every so often.  If you live in the south your used to and learn to deal with heat. In some cases it simply too hot to stay out more then a few hours.  try to do things late or early and limit your time.

If your from New York and it is over 100 degrees  you probaly should take the day off and head to the pool because your not used to this heat.  Your body needs to acclimate to the heat before you attempt to be out in it.

I played in 101* today.

Just gotta keep hydrated.

I recommend NUUN.  Really great stuff.

Follow your states sports association guidelines.. Here in TN, it's a no go with a heat index above 104. Just below that are certain accommodations that have to be provided.
Take heat as serious as you would concussion...

I'll be using a cart later this week when I play after work. Gonna be 94 and HI 100+. I normally walk 18 but it just won't be worth it and frankly dangerous... I want to live to see another day.

I once went to a driving range in Phoenix and it was 112... I had to stop because so much sweat was pouring into my eyes that I couldn't see.

Agree. Iíve work d in the heat All my life. Hydration and proper sun protection is key.  Drink water well before going out.  Drink during. Drink another 20 oz or more after you come inside.  More more more.  

Is so much habit to me that you rarely see me minus something to drink in my hand.     I got this thought process from my grandpa who never ever stayed inside.  He was like a caged animal on a rainy day.  And lived to be 91. So it wonít kill you if you do the right things

Need to slowly acclimate yourself to it.  Junior Golf's biggest events are in the summer.

It is hotter in South Florida in the mornings than late afternoon and evenings.  The moisture heating up from the ground in the morning makes it a stick sauna.  I know my kid is practicing at the course right now and will play 9 around 10:30.  It is 86 right now with a heat index of 96.  Living in Florida, he is just used to it.  Packs lunch and waters in a cooler, throws it on his push cart and goes out and plays.

Never too hot to fish or golf.  Played 18 yesterday evening then caught a couple of bass out on the course.

My kids were out in the heat last Wednesday.  Did not really complain.  Learning heat management has helped.  I can tell with my oldest when she is not drinking enough (she seems more prone to heat exhaustion).  Push cart with shading umbrella and a seat for when things are moving slow in front of her has really helped.  Lots of cold water, Gatorade occasionally, and some cooling towels help them get through it.

Did you see tiger playing in the heat over the weekend.  He was literally dripping sweat just standing there.  Long story short, it is never too hot to play.

Drop a tablet into your water bottle (including the water) and it will fizz and dissolve in a couple of minutes similar to an Alka-Seltzer.

I drop in between 1-3 tabs over the course of a very hot round (upper 90s --> low 100s)

I also let my son drop a tab or two into his bottle to ensure he's hydrated.

I've read it also serves as an excellent hangover prevention system right before bed.  :)

Cosign on Nuun tablets. They're a lifesaver.

Water alone won't do it and Gatorade's sugar doesn't agree with me if I have two of the 28-ouncers.

I've been bringing a 32-ounce insulated stainless steel cup that I fill with water 3-4 times a round, dropping two Nuun tablets in there. I take a sip every time I'm at the cart.

To the OP's point, 100+ degrees is probably too hot to be outside for a long time without a serious plan for cooling down and lots of breaks. Be safe out there!

Heat exhaustion, heat stroke is nothing to fool with. Staying hydrated is only one part of the equation, it really depends on how well your body can cool itself. Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. Sweating helps to cool the body but it becomes less effective as humidity rises, couple this with high heat and it does not take long for core temps to rise. Know the symptoms and watch for them. It can get dangerous quickly. As a coach I understand that I have to follow guidelines that others do not. Additionally, i have seen it all and it is scary. I see no reason to unnecessarily risk a child's safety.
Hydration is a must. Nunn and the like are great to add to water. Pedialite is also good. Avoid the high sugar sports drinks or cut them with lots of water. Have your child seek shade for a quick water break, often. Wear light, loose clothing. Have spare dry clothing for a change. Wear sunscreen and apply often (sunburn affects your body's ability to cool itself) Have a cooler with iced down towels. Watch/monitor your child carefully for necessary action.

Sadly, it has only been in the last 5 or so years that the governing bodies have begun to take heat seriously - and really only after athletes have died because of heat stroke.

So just saying "it's never too hot to golf" is really not great advice.
