What is your friend looking for?
a. If he wants to save money, get distance & a durable ball, tell him Precept's Laddie X (24 balls for $20)
b. If he wants overall good performance ball, soft feel, distance, mid-spin, passable to good on the greens, tell him Nike Power Distance Soft (I think 12 balls for $15)
c. If he wants basically the same features as above point (b.), but softer feel, longest distance, but less mid-spin (a bit more roll on the greens), tell him Noodle+ (12 balls for $16)
d. If he wants affordable, close to overall Tour quality ball, tell him Titleist NXT Tour (12 balls for $30)
e. If he wants excellent prices for Premium quality balsl, tell him to Golfsmith & see if they still have the Taylormade TP Red or Black logo over runs, which are '07 models (12 balls for $20). The Red is supposed to be close to Titleist ProV1 performance quality, while the Black is close to ProV1x performance quality.

It seems your friend is brand new to the game, so, he's probably going to be losing ALOT of golf balls, so, it's best to tell him to get the his money's worth on quantity. When he gets better, he can get better performance golf balls.

The gamer is aimed at lower handicap players with higher swing speeds. This ball does not launch high. It is a ball comparable to the NXT tour and Burner TP. Both are definately not for the higher handicap.

You should try the balls mentioned in the post above mine except for the bottom two (he should not be playing tour or performance balls).

My high handicaper friends like the Srixon AD330, Burner, e6+ and the D2 Feel. Ball four balls are high launch and feel lovely for the slow swing speed.

Highly agree w/gumpy. As I said on my earlier post, if your friend is a high handicapper, he would most likely need help keeping the ball straight, distance, durable and cheap... so forget telling him anything about high spin balls, tour or performance balls, as these are really pricey & he might (your friend) be loosing more golf balls than he actually realizes.

Does your friend really give the ball a good wack?

Freaks are good for the higher swing speed higher handicapers who need help keeping it straight. It's a very firm ball so if you have a slow swing speed, it feels very very harsh....

free balls, second whatever he finds around the course.  or what is cheap.   a high handicapper isn't going to make a ton of diff if he can get 3 more yards on his drive or spin his wedge just enough.  he is worried about good contact and hitting straight.

But for all means buy prov 1x's so you can loose them for me to find and play...

smitty72... u gotta tell us more about your friend's game (swing speed, hacker, whatever... just more details) than just telling us that he's a high handicapper to steer u in a better direction...

If he's played 2-3 times chances are he hasn't made the same swing twice yet, get the cheapest balls you can find and just enjoy the round.

Good point... I forgot that he stated that point in his 1st post.
Thus, smitty72, just tell you friend to get the most amount of golf balls, for the cheapest price as possible. Again, I recommend him the Precept's Laddie X, 2 dz. balls for $20... I say it's an excellent choice for the price & for how much your friend will get out the ball (one of the longest distance ball out there).

Honestly, I'd tell him the Titleist DT, either one.

It's the Titleist "everyman" ball, and I suggest it for a simple reason--it performs as well as any modestly priced ball, but it is going to feel pretty soft compared to most.  I think it's a good thing for someone learning the game and improving, to feel something more than a generic pop when the ball and club collide.

I'd say buy the cheapest balls you can find. Once he gets to the point where he's no longer losing 3-6 balls a round (assuming that's the case now - it was with me for the first few/several rounds ;) ) then he can start investigating what balls might work better for him. Until you can make semi-consistent contact with the ball it doesn't matter that much if you're playing a rock or a pro v1.

JMHO.

Tell him to pick up a bucket for 5 bucks at the driving range.  Just kidding.  I'm pretty sure he just wants something cheap to knock around.  I say go to Wal-Mart and get the cheapest you can find.  All you can haul for a dollar stuff.  Good to go.

I guess I disagree with all these cheap ball recommendations. You should buy a decent ball, especially for putting. Playing with a bad ball will give you absolutely no confidence, and in golf you need that. I'm not saying buy ProV's, but at least play with something that isn't a ROCK.

Ebay has great deals on used balls. Stay with the AAAA, or AAA+ and you can hit them in the woods and not feel the pain.

Pinnicle gold 15-pack is a great value and they don't feel like rocks. Also the Bridgestone e5/e6 are a great value.

Topflight D2 Feel is a highly under rated ball - if you don't believe me, then do a search on this site and read the love.

And at $15 for a box of 15 retail, it is the perfect ball for a golfer whose game doesn't yet justify a higher price ball, but wants a softer cover ball that gives some feel around the greens.  Don't get me wrong , it is still a little clicky with the putter, but it isn't a ROCK as another poster suggested.

I have tried Pinnacle Gold (after starting back up after 10 year layoff - they are okay), Pinnacle Exception (soft, low cost & pretty good), Wilson Smart Core (bargain of the century with tons of feel & soft).  The fourth is TopFlite D2 Straight which I like.

I have also fooled around with Cally, Nike, Precept (Laddie X is nice) and Titleist (all types) plus all the others Pinnacle, TopFlite and on and on that I found on the course.  There are a few spots in the woods on my local course that are an absolute treasure trove for balls.  I have only played these various brands on a few holes but not enough to figure out which ones I like.  I think Titleists have to be among the best off irons, wedges and putters.  However, the Pinn Exception and Wilson Smart Cores are pretty good too.  These softer lighter balls are are a little harder to hit well off drivers and FW or a high handicapper like me.

I like the TopFlite D2 Straight.  It is a little straighter, long and not a rock.  The D2 Feel is supposedly excellent along with the TopFlight Gamer.  With the D2 Straight you have to ease up a little with the putter but the irons and wedges are okay.

nah, just the Fire.  the Tour Fire is $19.99/dozen.  the Fire is a pretty decent ball--the Callaway HX-Hot is prolly the closest comparable ball.  i prefer it to the HX-Hot myself--it feels softer off the driver.  spins off the irons a little better than the HX-Hot as well.  it's too bad TaylorMade decided not to continue with the idea of the Fire (3-piece distance ball with a firm Surlyn cover and soft core), instead making their Burner ball a 2-piece, with the Burner TP as the 3-piece Tour Fire replacement.  personally, i think that's a mistake, since imho, there doesn't seem to be enough differentiation between the Burner ball and the Noodle, which is also a 2-piece with the same cover as the Burner ball, but not the LDP dimple pattern.

I picked up two dozen tour fires at Dicks a couple weeks ago. They were "buy one get one" so I got 2 dozen balls for $30.I go out last Friday to play a slow 18 bymyself and play 2 or 3 balls off the tee.I took the tour fires with me {actually not expecting much since it's made in China} but was pleasantly surprised. It was a "bomber" off the tee and every iron I hit {6 iron or less} stck with in 2 or 3 inches of the ball mark.I even managed to "back a few up" with full wedges.Ball had a really nice, soft feel to it around the greens and went forever off the tee.Now I see Maxfli has introduced a new line of balls {at Dicks}.The most expensive ball in the line was selling for $42.99 which is competing with the Cally IX and Pro V1.This time next year they will be giving those balls away.Titty,Cally,TM and Srixon {IMO} have that market cornered. The tour fire is a much MUCH better ball than I ever anticipated it to be and will be playing these til I run out.I save my tour IX {Dicks, online, is offering free shipping and free personalization on Cally tour IX balls} for when we play 'THE CLIFF'S courses.

You guys playing these cheap $10 a dozen balls are cheating yourself....get on ebay and buy some recycled high end balls. You will pay what your currently paying for a much, much, better ball.

Lostgolfballs has AAA+ that are every bit as good as new....quit wasting your time on cheap balls...if you say they are good, you obviously haven't played a really good ball.

The words "recycled, Used" must have some people turned off.
