Hi all,

Just received some irons from eBay (2018 Callaway X-forged).  They appear to be counterfeits (poor finish to them; rear has the appearance of being 'painted on' - very uneven; serial number is smudgy and poorly inscribed).  Have contacted Callaway to see if can verify the serial number.  In the mean time, was wondering if someone could please send through a close up pic of the rear of their X-forged and the serial number.

Much appreciated!

I went through the same thing a few months back.  Ebay is full of fake X forged irons right now.  I have been flagging them as I see them but eBay does not remove them.  The fakes have very "cheesy" looking back cavities, authentic ones are smooth a slightly different finish.  You can also normally tell by the shaft labels and grips that they use on the fakes.  Post some pictures of yours and I'll tell you if they are legit or not (take close ups of the back cavity).

Also, Callaway will tell you they cannot tell you by serial number if they are fake or not because they do not log categorize their serial numbers.

If they are fake file a claim with paypal and or send your seller an email letting them know they sold you fake/counterfeit clubs and that you expect a full refund including shipping costs immediately.

Thanks. Fairly sure they are fake. Have sent pics to callaway as well. Issues with rear of the heads; apostrophe on the hosels isn’t uniform: Nippon band doesn’t seem right (says: MadeIn Japan rather than Made In Japan. See pics: https://1drv.ms/f/s!...10CFSwct_QLOgmQ

Fake as can be.  Main giveaway is the faint oval stamp around the x forged in the cavity...among others.

Also I bet if you smell the grips they smell like a tire.  When they make the counterfeit grips they use similar rubber

If this seller is on Ebay why not name them? Private seller or not. Fakes are fakes and people should be aware of who the seller so we can avoid them. Why the refusal to name them? By not naming the Ebay seller renders your initial post worthless.

He is not "refusing" to name them. He's being responsible. I think the OP is on his way to becoming certain that they are fakes but isn't quite there yet. Instead of trashing somebody's name and accusing them of selling fakes without being sure, he's first doing what he can to determine that they are,in fact, fakes. I believe that was the intent behind his "worthless" original post.

My friend also got a set of fakes a month ago and did not know they were fakes until he compared them with my retail ones.
The ebay retailers are mostly from Mira Loma and around the inland empire.
A good way to check before you buy is that most of the fakes are being called Japan versions and are being sold with the older callaway grip the japan market is not selling them with the dated 2012 grip.
When they arrive you will be be hard pressed to see they are fakes right away even after hitting them as they are very soft however the finish on the cavity of some of the heads looks a little ruff , and the trailing edge is straight not with a slight curve, the stamping is not as direct as the callaway stamping is deep and deliberate.

Thanks - yes, waiting for Callaway to confirm, even though I am 99.9% sure, better to have official recognition.  Also, the seller wasn't a high volume seller, and no other golf equipment for sale or in their feedback: not much risk to potential buyers here in WRX.

Based on comparison pictures he bought fakes. Since he bought fakes the seller's name should be provided. If he doesn't name them this entire thread is not needed and yes becomes worthless.

I agree. Whether the seller knowingly sold fakes is irrelevant. Without knowing the seller, they are free to resell them to another unsuspecting buyer.

Irons still in my possession - will let you know seller ID once Callaway get back to me or after I post them back and have settled the issue with eBay and PayPal.

BTW, PayPal are becoming more unhelpful in this situation (than my experience in the past when I received a counterfeit good, about 3 years ago): they told me that I had to post the irons back to the seller at my expense (despite them being counterfeit, to the best of my knowledge).  Seems eBay don't agree with that so waiting until seller has run out of time to send me return postage fees.  Paypal are getting worse and worse.  When is another company going to step in and become the new force for online payment (or is there one I'm not aware of?)?  For instance, my account is from Australia so if I sell something on WRX, the buyer sends money in USD which gets converted to AUD (with a fee) and then converted back to USD to show in my balance.  Fairly unbelievable.....

I didn't even need to look closely. The Golf Pride grip has fake written all over the font.

Paypal is not helpful in some cases but I blame it on abusers..

eBay now is more buyer friendly than ever so you should have more luck there.

Gluck
