Carnoustie killed me.  It wasn't as pretty as I thought it would be.  Housing down one side a dislike

Aesthetically its not the best course I would certainly agree with you, however it is a bloody tough test of golf and a test of golf that will chew you up and spit you out if your game is even slightly off. It's not my favourite Open venue but there is no doubt that Carnoustie is a top course.

The comments about Carnoustie not being as aesthetically pleasing on the eye are 100% fair. Itís not Kingsbarns or Turnberry. Itís just a really good solid test of golf with no weak holes. I was interested to see someone point out that the greens are flat. This is bang on for the most part. Which is why I see someone like Sergio doing well again here. Although my early tip is on Spieth to defend. As poor as his putting has been this season I think he will hole putts for fun out there.

Anyways tonights pics!

What I like the most is that Canoustie will play shorter than in 2007! :golfer:

What we need is a fair amount of rain beforehand to make the rough penal enough, then very dry in the days before....ideally a horrible saturday with wind and rain, nothing better than one day where par is a great score, then a beautiful sunday where good scores are out there.....ideal.

Thatís cos of the stadium grand stand round the first tee. Every other hole is the same length. To be fair I canít really see where they could extend anything

Molinari is sure looking like a favorite. Bubba could get inspired he is playing really well. Sergio?

Who ever wins will be finding some fairways and hitting crisp irons.

I can't actually believe how green Carnoustie is looking at the minute. It has been so dry here over the last month plus that all the links courses around us have taken on a distinctly yellow colour. These are pictures of the 18th at Moray GC Old Course at the end of April and then the end of June...who says it rains all the time in Scotland?

Rumor I heard was that the course is green just now as they are recovering the turf from standard play (course only closed to the public yesterday I think) and have been pumping water at maximum for the last month.

As of today they are stopping watering the fairways to bake them out for the next 2 weeks - they will brown up very quickly.

Its not been too windy round here recently (Monifieth) but during the evening you are getting about a club of wind off the east

That is when I remember them sitting there and doing the same myself.
Back in the late 80's, early 90's a group of us would head up over the summers and play everywhere around the Moray coast and one day we played out behind the Open players on Moray Old, Coming up the last my mate and I hit decent drives and only had a wedge left. With a packed banking behind the green my mate proceeded to hit a beautiful shank that must have ended on Stotfield road!
I couldn't stop laughing :-)

Lossie was great then and only £18 for a day ticket. Could squeeze in 3 rounds on days the course was free.

Are you a member there or at Elgin? I enjoy that course as well.

Elgin is my main course but I also take out the half year membership at Moray and get down often enough. One of my good friends is the assistant Pro there and the Club Manager lives around the corner from me so it makes it easy enough to get a game. In fact, I will be there this Friday for a game. I am jealous!
Both really good tracks.

Some tough holes on Elgin, especially when the wind blows.

*(I posted this below on another thread but it has gotten no traction so I copied and pasted it here)

I was reading a weather report for here in the States and it mentioned the current heat wave for the UK (albeit the temps are not what we would consider a heat wave here, I am sure they are unpleasant).  IT got me to thinking about The Open and the conditions.

I was hoping it would be like concrete and some of the "un-fair" -ness of the US Open would make a showing and the pros would be playing approaches well short of the greens and actually using the ground. (I don't believe in fair and unfair.)

I am a little disappointed to hear of the green nature of the course and I hope they do go through and bake her out nice and crispy.  I want to see a fast, hard-running course.  Brown is beautiful.

We can't seem to process that grass can get yellow and tan and brown and not die.  And perhaps even play better in those conditions than flush green.

It already looks pretty crispy and there's no rain forecast for the next week or two. Shades of Hoylake??

I think they only water it to keep it from wilting back too much before the Open so that they have some levels of rough.
It will be pretty brown and bouncy come the start.

I was fortunate enough to play there seven years ago, and am really looking forward to another Open there. Just a brutal test of golf, but a once-in-a-lifetime type experience.

Just finished up watching the Lee Trevino chronicles, what an exceptional series.  The whole final round with Liang Hu is just one part of such an iconic championship.  Open week can't come quick enough.

I'm in Stirling from Sunday to Wednesday before The Open, thought to myself how far is Carnoustie on the train, turns out not very far at all, me and the wife are now booked in for the Tuesday practice day :taunt:

I'm sure she will be fine about it
