My wife mentioned, Hiking....... cost minimal to get into and depending on if you combine camping with it, could run the cost up for onetime equipment purchase .  Not required to "update" your hiking equipment as often as in golf.  Maybe a pair or two of hiking shoes ( boots ) per year will be your expenses unless you go into those high tech clothing, then it'll coast you plenty.
We have miles and miles of hiking trails around the area and hundreds of trail heads accessible from all parts of the neighborhoods.

How about skydiving instructor? Will cost plenty of $$$$ to get certified, takes many jumps (time), and if the chute doesn't open, well no more thinking about golf!

Bowling. If you're looking for another recreational sport that you can compete in with a seriously deep equipment rabbit hole, bowling is it.
Never forget that the luxury of being

Get the in laws to live with you for a couple of weeks, it wont be long before you love golf again.

if not that, try an affair, be cheaper in the long run

Plus you've already laid the groundwork. I can come home 5 hours late from a round of golf, reeking of perfume, with lipstick on my collar (and probably elsewhere), and my wife will just roll her eyes and say "Nice try. You played 36, didn't you?"

USPSA competitive shooting.

Spend thousands on competitive (especially if competing in 3-gun matches and Open class) weapons, accessories, and ammo. And it requires a bunch of practice time to be competitive, or you could just do it for fun.

You'll discover that golf is relatively cheap and doesn't take that long. ;)
I'm not suggesting we kill all the stupid people, I'm just suggesting we remove all the warning labels and let the situation resolve itself.

How about joining those who walk around the mall early in the morning.   You can window shop and commiserate with the other mall walkers.

And/or start a zen garden.

Or volunteer at a community kitchen.   Tatertots, it fits : ) An aside, love those carb loaded, deep fried balls of goodness.

My brother quit golf over 2 decades ago. He started bird watching as a hobby.   I do a little but I am not obsessed (no life list).  Turns out Arizona is a great place to watch birds.  Some folks actually take trips here to see among other things the elegant trogon, ruddy ground dove and phainopeplas.   It has its seasons too due to the migrations.  There are crazy web sites like this only devoted to birds.  You can spend hundred or thousands on binoculars and spotting scopes.  And you can learn an entire new set of jargon that only the zealots will understand. You can saw things like "boobey" and people will think you are talking about feet. What's not to like?

Learn a musical instrument. I’d suggest the drums, a nice kit runs about the same as a set of clubs.  Drum lessons are much cheaper than golf lessons. You’d get pretty far practicing 16 hours a week.

Photography. A good quality DLSR with various lenses will cost a pretty penny. Plus you've no doubt gotten up at 4:30 to make it to an early tee time, so getting up that early to get good sunrise shots won't be unreasonable. It can take hundreds of hours and thousands of shots to get the one shot you've been going after.

Start collecting gold coins. That way, when you discover your income wasn't disposable after all, you can reverse your mistake.
