Just a quick public announcement.  It is a good idea to ask the reps to verify that there is no " boost" setting on the monitor you are demoing clubs on.

Yesterday, my son almost bought a hybrid that he was clearly carrying to far based on the #'s he was seeing.  He was so wowed that he was set to buy, so I handed him a driver and said hit it.  What do you know, carrying well past what his normal #'s are.  His eyes were opened.  We asked the rep, who was shocked that we were questioning the #'s because they were to long, to check the settings.  Giving him the benefit of the doubt, he stated that "oh yeah, we were messing with this earlier" and proceeded to turn it off.  Boom, #'s in line with where we know he is carrying things.  Only problem was that I saw other reps selling on that machine earlier.

Just to have the best info possible, always ask to make sure there are no "extra" settings on.

Thanks,
Kris

I was in golf town once and was hitting a 7 iron 30 yards further than normal.  I then moved down into the teaching bay with a different iron and the numbers were spot on.  Brought that iron back to the first bay and got an extra 30 yards.

I never consider a new club unless I have the one I'm looking to replace there.  Even then I just look at launch and spin numbers most of the time.  Then again, I still play with a 2009 burner TP.

Another thing I have caught salesmen doing is giving you roll out number with one club but carry with another.

I've hit balls in golftown 1000 times and i've never caught anyone boosting the sim. I think this is usually more of an urban legend that a real thing, though i don't doubt it's happened

Sometimes the sims are just not that great too.

Please do not take this as a sweeping indictment against box stores and their practices.  I have quite a few friends that work in these facilities that are salt of the earth and above board in their dealings.

This is an isolated incident that I experienced, but without being naive, know that this is a practice that takes place.

Bring your club, hit your club against the new club. Apples to apples, which is better?

It's always good to have your own club to compare against something new at one of those places.

If the numbers are boosted, it won't matter if you hit your own club also.

If you’re buying a club solely on how far you can hit it and basing the numbers off of what you think you hit outside then that is on you.
If the boost is on and you are comparing new clubs then it should not matter.  The longer/straighter one will still be longer/straighter.  If you want to fill a specific gap or find a driver that is longer than your own, bring in those clubs for reference.
The most common phrase I’ve heard is, “I hit it farther than that outside!” Somehow they all get 275-280 with a 90mph swing.

Kris

Just to follow up, I did have a look and it was set on like 9000 feet elevation or something crazy.  Maybe the guys were screwing around after hours and forgot to put it back.  This only happened once and they later changed to GC2's as they felt the old simulators weren't accurate enough.

As mentioned, it doesn't really matter how they have it set as long as you compare to your old club.

Yep.

Also, I am aware of comparing a club against my own as a baseline.  No matter the inflation I can still see differences.  I was just sharing an eye opening experience my son had in his consumer growing experience.

I am speaking to those that go in without their sticks, pick up a club, get magical #'s and buy because of this.

Thanks, Kris!

It happens no matter where you go sometimes.  Whether intentional where they are trying to sell clubs, or unintentional where the employees forgot to change the settings back after a contest (it happens), its good to check the settings.  I used to manage a GG back home and we would have customers who would screw around with settings all the time.  My guys didnt inflate the numbers, but I knew of some managers that did.

I thought I could hit a 7 iron almost 180 until I realized after getting home it was 5 degrees stronger than my 7............ never heard of boosting the monitor though.
