Hey WRX,

I remember hearing a while back that Sang Moon Bae was going to be required to return to South Korea for a couple years' military service, despite his success on the TOUR. Does anyone know if he's back from that now, or has he gotten some sort of a waiver from his home government?

Bae has completed his service and is back on the PGA Tour. He is playing the 2017-18 season out of Exemption Category-22 (Major Medical/Family Emergency/Service Obligation)

Incidentally, Seung Yul Noh, winner of the 2014 Zurich-New Orleans, has just started his service obligation period (about 2 years).

Bae is exempt for this week's Byron Nelson as a past winner of the event in 2013, so this is his last free pass here.

Bae also won the 2014 Fry's-dot-com Open (now the Safeway), so he's exempt for that in both 2018 and 2019, no matter what.

I give him masssive credit. I figured he had the influence and celebrity to get into the KATUSA program and have it a little easier but he ended up  a ROK Infantryman.  Certainly not an easy life and not conducive to golf. By his own admission  he is stronger now. I would say in more ways than one.

The only thing that would give a male golfer from S. Korean an exemption would be winning a major or an Olympic medal.

More than one golfer’s game has fallen victim to S. Korea’s mandatory military service.

Right as I thought the families who had the money could ave their son in the KATUSA program as the ROK army is bad A$$ as I was stationed on the DMZ many years ago and I've seen how they train, a lot of respect for them as they are hardcore

Yes. But the exemptions, if earned, still apply.

Yup, he was one of my favorites to watch. Just had a wonderful swing.

Really hope he is able to get back to that level

Very impressed that he took the infantry route.  He's only had 14 starts since being back and who knows how much practice time he had between separation and the Safeway start.  He also had a T15 at Pebble Beach so let's hope that's a glimmer of better things to come as he plays more.

Lot of respect for him to meet his obligation and not turn it into some publicity stunt either. Hope he gets back in form.
