I think Steve Stricker is my favorite player on tour, so I took note during the Players coverage when Johnny Miller said that Bernhard Langer is currently #1 and Stricker was #2 (or might be the second best). Yes, Langer has dominated the Sr Circuit in recent years, but I think Stricker is a better player currently. Consider:

Major Record since Stricker turned 50:
Langer- cut at 2017 Masters, t38 this year. Did not play the other events.
Stricker- t16, t16, t37 & t54 in the four majors in 2017 which included winning the US Open qualifier. Not invited to 2018 Masters.

Stricker holds a: 6-1-1 edge over Langer head to head since Stricker turned 50 last year-
2017 Tuscon: Stricker 2nd, Langer 3rd
2017 MS Gulf: both t3
2017 Masters: Stricker t16, Langer Cut,
2017 Regions: Langer Win, Stricker t13
2017 3 M: Stricker t3, Langer t13
2018 Chubb: Stricker t2, Langer t36,
2018 Cologard: Stricker Win, Langer t54,
2018 Rapiscan: Stricer Win, Langer t9,

Stricker has more wins in fewer 2018 Champions Tour (individual events) than Langer:
Langer: 8 events played, 1 Win, 2nd, t2, t9, t16, t36, t54, 58th
Stricker: 3 events, 2 Wins, t2

2018 PGA Tour:
Langer has not played
Stricker: 6 Events, 4 top 31 finishes, 2 missed cuts

Yes, Langer has had a better Sr Career overall than Stricker, but Stricker has shown that he is better than Langer when they both tee it up and has also shown that he can still compete on the regular tour.

Stricker's major record in his 40s (2007-2016) is also quite impressive compared to Langer (1998-2007) or most other players.
Stricker: 34 Majors played, 7 top 10s, 20 top 25s, 3 missed cuts (0 missed cuts in 26 majors since turning 43!)
Langer: 32 Majors played, 4 top 10s, 9 top 25s, 10 missed cuts (t8 at 2014 Masters as a 56 year old!)
Phil Mickelson: 27 Majors played, 1 Win, 7 top 10s, 12 top 25s, 6 missed cuts since turning 40 in June 2010
Vijay Singh: 38 Majors Played, 1 Win, 11 top 10s, 17 top 25s, 8 missed cuts from 2003-2012
Davis Love III: 34 Majors Played, 6 top 10s, 9 top 25s, 16 missed cuts from 2004-2013
Kenny Perry: 29 Majors Played, 4 top 10s, 9 top 25s, 6 missed cuts from Aug 2000-Aug 2010
Jack Nicklaus: 40 Majors Played, 3 Wins, 13 Top 10s, 24 top 25s, 4 missed cuts & 1 WD from 1980-1989
Tom Watson: 39 Majors Played, 8 top 10s, 15 top 25s, 14 missed cuts from 1990-1999

Of all the guys listed, Stricker has the best cuts made % of anyone and is 2nd only to Nicklaus in top 25 %

I doubt Stricker will play as heavy a Sr schedule as Langer (218 events the last 10+ years), but I think he could really dominate out there if that was his sole focus.

Stricker certainly is NOT the best Sr ever, but he has been one of the most CONSISTENTLY GOOD players on Tour in their 40s and early 50s. My point is he is under-rated and better than Langer CURRENTLY.

Langer and Nicklaus have more Sr Tour majors than Hale who has the most Sr Wins of all-time. In his 40s,
Hale Irwin played in 28 Majors, 1 Win, 3 Top 10s, 10 Top 25s & 3 missed cuts.
After turning 50, Hale's best Major was t27 (Stricker already has two t16), but he made 8 cuts (compared to 5 for Langer with a t8)

I know he didn't play as big a Sr schedule as others, but I'd say Nicklaus was the best 50+ Player all time as he did much better in Majors at that age than either Langer or Irwin (and ranks #2 in Sr Majors behind only Langer). Of course, Snead was a very good older player before there was much of a Sr Tour.

Edit- Just looked at Snead's record...fields were not as deep, but incredibly he had 9 top 10s in Majors after turning 50, including tops 10s in the PGA 3 years in a row ('72-74) highlighted by t3 at age 62! He might have been best 50+

Langer. No contest. And already mentioned Hale Irwin. One of the most underrated players of all time. Three US Opens and barely gets a mention.

Closer than you would think...

Stricker- $43+ million on Regular Tour with about $26 total winnings the last 10 years
Langer- $10.5 reg, about $25 M SR, plus some Euros
Irwin- more Sr wins (45) and $ than Langer + $6 M reg Tour

Yes, Langer is 9 years older than Stricker, so it is impressive how well he is still playing. However, Miller seemed to be referencing CURRENT rankings of 50+, not comparing Stricker now to Langer at 51.

To be clear, I am not talking best 50+ of all time as Stricker is not (YET) in that conversation. An argument could be made that Langer is not in the Top 3 all-time as Irwin, Nicklaus and Snead all had much better records in the Majors.

Langer isn't even playing golf per se, so that disqualifies him.

Stricker knows how to put the ball in the hole.

No worries. I was just wondering on the age thing. I thought he was quite a bit older, just couldn't remember for sure (maybe cause I'm getting older)!

OP added a caveat of in his 40s. That is still a gigantic 1 more major in that time frame than Stricker... neverminding 3 more in total.

It seems weird to characterize guys by age when there’s a big age gap between them. 51 year old Stricker might be better than 60 year old Langer - but if you’re going to age-constrain it, shouldn’t you compare apples to apples ages?

For his age (60), I'd say Langer is a better player than Stricker. The reason I was comparing them is because Miller said Langer was CURRENTLY the best 50+ with Stricker possibly number 2...I'd reverse that order.

It seems weird to characterize guys by age when there's a big age gap between them. 51 year old Stricker might be better than 60 year old Langer - but if you're going to age-constrain it, shouldn't you compare apples to apples ages?
For his age (60), I'd say Langer is a better player than Stricker. The reason I was comparing them is because Miller said Langer was CURRENTLY the best 50+ with Stricker possibly number 2...I'd reverse that order.

Here are some golfers who are the same age or younger than Stricker who don't seem to be playing as well currently:
Justin Leonard
David Toms
Mike Weir
David Duval
Stewart Cink
KJ Choi
Jim Furyk
Ernie Els
Luke Donald
Retief Goosen
Geoff Olgilvy
Hunter Mahan
Stuart Appleby

What are there, 10 majors in that group?
That Claret Jug or green jacket sure look nicer than the invisible trophy given to the Best 50+ player in May 2018 ;)
Off topic, but interesting to debate which career you would rather have. Furyk and Els have certainly outshone Stricker.

Els, still playing a full schedule, has really fallen off a cliff with his only world-wide top 10 since 2015 coming in 2016, a ranking outside the top 600 and making less than half the cuts the last few years. The most OWGR points he has earned over the last 60+ weeks was shooting 72-75-83-78 at the Masters in 2017. Yes, he is still playing at a very high level compared to us mortals, but it must be a bit humbling for him out on tour.

I'm sure that Stricker would have loved to win a major, but not sure if he would trade places with any of the guys mentioned above. Who on that list do you think will make more $ on the Champions Tour than Stricker?? I give a chance to Furyk and a few of the others are young enough that they could turn things around, but most would be long-shots to dominate they way Stricker might the next few years.
Golfing when I can, Ski Coaching, Instructing and Guiding all winter at Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Keystone and Breckenridge.

Best ever, Hale Irwin. Stricks has a LONG way to go.

Sam Snead had a good senior career - on the PGA Tour.
Very true about Snead...really impressive what he did in his 50s!

Vijay has to be up there. He still contends the odd time on the regular tour.
Yes, but his results tin recent years on the PGA Tour are nowhere near as good Stricker with only 8 made cuts in his last 25 PGA events (with last top 25 a year ago). He has played well on the Champions Tour the last few year with 2 wins in 18 starts, but Stricker has as many wins (and more $ this year) in fewer starts (and has rarely finished outside the top 3 in individual events). Definitely a good 55 year old player (and one of the best 50+ ball strikers), but not as good as Stricker right now (due to Stricker's better short game).

If Stricker had Ernie’s money, he’d burn his own

After 50 I would like to play like Langer and live like Miguel Angel.
LOL - yes. I do marvel at Langer's game. He came to our club recently when the Champions was in town. Some of the guys I play with were there and said he was basically the fittest guy in a crowded room, chiseled.

They are right Langer has like a 30 inch waste ... acquired great genetics from his war hero dad that escaped Russian captivity during WW2
