After testing a lot of different balls over the last months, I have concluded that the TP5 will be my gamer. Second favorite for me is the Pro V1. I have to say, now that we are having warmer weather the TP5 and Pro V1 feel nice and soft.  I just give the edge to the TP5 because the distance with the irons was impressive.  That ball comes out high and long.

So whatís your ball for this year?  And what others did you test before deciding?

Driver - Taylormade M2
3w - Titleist 915F
4h - Titleist 816H
Irons (GW - 4i) - Titleist 716 AP1
Putter - Taylormade Ghost Spider Si
Wedges Titleist  Vokey SM6 55 and 60

Same here.  I usually shoot in the vicinity of 80 and my ball striking isn't good enough for the ball choice to matter although I do prefer a urethane cover and soft overall.

I haven't settled, yet. I'm a bit of a wanker in that I won't use Pro V's as almost everyone does, I used and loved the TM Lethal and haven't found anything I've liked as much.

About a month ago I bought some TP5X and Bridgestone XS, if I had to choose it would be the XS due to getting more spin for me in the mid/long irons and feeling softer. They do spin a bit much for me in the wedges, but go just as long as the TP5X with a marginally lower flight which I prefer.

I will buy some of the TP5 and Z Stars before I make a final decision.

Like the OP I have settled on a TP5X/PV1 combo for this year. I do however like to play a non tour ball once in a while just for something different. I find that the only place the non tour ball hurts me is green side spin.

Right now it's project (a) because it's pretty hard for me to tell the difference between than and TP5. Spin is so much about strike, and when your strike isn't super consistent.... it doesn't really matter.

Project(a) 4A on LGB is like $8 a dozen. How can I pass that up? TP5 are almost 2x the cost.

The only thing that much affects my score is how often I either completely duff a short-game shot, pull-hook an iron shot 50 yards into the woods or blast a tee shot OB swinging from the inside with a wide-open clubface. It's hard for a club or ball to save or cost me two strokes a round but one bad swing can easily be two strokes gone in a fraction of a second.

So I play the equipment that makes me happiest. When it comes to the ball I play the AVX. It goes really far off the driver, it's the first time I've ever experienced a ball that unequivocally adds driving distance (about 8-9 yards on average by my stats) and it also gives me a very pleasing trajectory on iron shots while spinning enough to stop the ball on the greens.

AVX makes me happy so that's what I play. Same as my Ping irons, Taylormade driver and and my beat-up old putter. As soon as I tried each of those things it was like, "This is the one".

When the happy wears off I'll find something different.

Everything has its drawbacks, as the man said when his mother-in-law died, and they came down upon him for the funeral expenses.
