No exemptions?

None. They do have alternates and Tiger would probably be close based on his play this year at #54 on the Fed Ex Points list. Aaron Wise is #51 and the eighth alternate.

I can't ever recall a special exemption for the TPC.

Think its a 5 year exemption for winners and this is the last year of his per his win in 2013

Then, his lifetime exemption kicks in, I believe.

Glad I cut the cord and didn't bother subscribing to another service... So no more endless GC prattle :)

Tiger makes the game.

It Tiger had never come along, there still would be golf.

When Tiger is gone, there still will be golf.

While he jumps the interest and intensity of the game, substantially, when he's playing, he doesn't make the game.

If he were still out, we'd still have this thread.
Yup...and a higher proportion of true golf fans on this board and at tournaments :)

Seems like the 5th major talk is being pushed harder by GC than anyone else. Last night Brandel  on Live From, this morning Damon Hack on Morning Drive. While all the golfers on there keep saying, "great tournament, not a major".

GC pushing trying to stir the pot for ratings?

think it's more than just gc ... sportswriters want their 'say', so they're proclaiming it to be a major ... that drivel last night, as well as hal sutton & matt adams, is amusing ... they act as though they're not aware the 4 majors weren't decided by some committee ... the players will never be a major ... it's a great addition to the resume, esp for hof consideration, but it won't be a major ... golfers want it kept simple when talking about records ... we don't want a retroactive addition to the discussion ...

Great point about the sport writers wanting their say. Case in point is Damon Hack. And with electronic media, there are now so many more "writers" out there. And they all want to get heard, or maybe more importantly, get clicks.

PGA will not be dropped as a major, eventually the TPC will simply be added = 5 majors.  No way any of the 4 would be dropped.  You heard it here, folks.

it will never be added ... the 4 majors are set in stone ... adding the players brings in too many other debates that everyday golfers and pros do not want to have ... yes, the definition of a major has evolved over time ... that doesn't mean it must continue to evolve ... jack's 18 is as iconic a number in golf as there exists ... does that change to 21? ... there's zero movement by the golfing public at large for the players to be called a major, and there's almost no desire by pros, other than a few who have won a major or two plus a players, to have it called a major ...

Can't wait to watch this. Honestly not sure who I'm predicting to win this week, gut tells me DJ.

Brian Katrek and John Maginnes on XMR said it should be a big week for him. and that he should take them pairing Rickie with Phil and Tiger personal since he is the #1 in the world and not pairing him in big name group. Personally, don't think DJ cares. But I hope they have something there. The top 10 are all playing real well right now, he is in need of a big week.

I hope not. I think the LPGA really dropped the ball by doing it (especially since they bent to the will of a sponsor to do it, but that's another story).

It's good being what it is, a great tournament with a great field.

I think if there is ever another major it will be something in Asia, not another one in the U.S.

5th major? C'mon - that course is a tricked up TV freak show.

TPC Sawgrass - 3rd least favorite tourney of the year right behind the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and two behind the Phoenix Open.

He was in the Top 125, Stricker is playing for the same reason this year.

If there was a lifetime exemption, Jodie Mudd, David Duval and Craig Perks would all be teeing it up this week.

14 and 15 are yawns. There always have to be holes like that even on the best courses. 14 and 17 at Augusta. Otherwise a lot of drama at Sawgrass, epic finish. Rickys late charge and victory is probably the greatest moment in later years. For me and my fellow countrymen Stensons win a decade ago together with good ol Fanny was maybe the biggest Scandinavian win at the time.

#14 at Augusta and TPC are excellent golf holes, hardly yawn inducing.

Why shouldn't it be a major?  What's wrong with 5 majors.  It's a great field and it's the players tourney.  No brainer to add it to the list.  U must play very well tee to green to win there too....

Why shouldn't it be a major?  What's wrong with 5 majors.  It's a great field and it's the players tourney.  No brainer to add it to the list.  U must play very well tee to green to win there too....

Adding a major would take away the hoopla from the other 4.

Not a major, and it's not tricked up; you got to be able to move the ball both ways;  condition wise it's as good as any courses I've ever been to and I been to a lot of high end exclusive courses.

if you do go, get the benefactor tickets; florida is stupid hot this time of the year.  I'll be there saturday for a day trip with the boys.

think he was saying it's a great course that doesn't suit his game that well ... and it doesn't ... nothing wrong with what he said ...
carnoustie this year will suit Bubbas game.....you heard it here first ;)

Bubba never had a top 20 on a links, and Carnoustie is the hardest one, he also didn't play the weekend half of the time. Why you think so?

Links courses should fit Bubba's game with his creativity and ability to move the ball, but I think they get in his head, particularly with the potential for weather.

Here's a radical idea... Why not just let it continue to be what it is, The Players.

What good does calling it the "5th major" possibly due to the tournament?
  • Does it make the field deeper? - no
  • Does it make the purse bigger? - no
  • Does it increase exposure? - Maybe a tiny bit but most likely no
  • Does it make tour pros want to win it more? - Maybe but most likely not as it will never be thought of as equal to the 4 other current majors and it is already quite prestigious to win it.

agree ... he should do well in all opens, but the odd bounce and the weather get him riled up ...
