This week brings us the "fifth" major.

No overage past champions (just the Senior TPC Champion)
No club pros
No amateurs
No qualifiers from Bulgaria or Laos

and if he had won his last TPC in 2012 instead of 2013, no Tiger!

tee times are already set...

It Tiger had never come along, there still would be golf.

When Tiger is gone, there still will be golf.

While he jumps the interest and intensity of the game substantially when he's playing, he doesn't make the game.

If he were still out, we'd still have this thread.

No exemptions?

None. They do have alternates and Tiger would probably be close based on his play this year at #54 on the Fed Ex Points list. Aaron Wise is #51 and the eighth alternate.

I can't ever recall a special exemption for the TPC.

I love this tournament, and for the most part I love the course.  Tight playing lines.  You must pull the shot off.  It really calls out the players who are not quite on their games.

I think Tiger will struggle this week.  He may make the cut, but he will not feature over the weekend.

Jordan is due big time, and he appears to be slowly rounding into form.  I would love to see him win this great championship.  Also time for JT to get it going again.  I hope the two boyhood buddies are paired in the final game Sunday.

14 and 15 are yawns. There always have to be holes like that even on the best courses. 14 and 17 at Augusta. Otherwise a lot of drama at Sawgrass, epic finish. Rickys late charge and victory is probably the greatest moment in later years. For me and my fellow countrymen Stensons win a decade ago together with good ol Fanny was maybe the biggest Scandinavian win at the time.

Bubba never had a top 20 on a links, and Carnoustie is the hardest one, he also didn't play the weekend half of the time. Why you think so?

Wouldn't be surprised to see Jason Day go back-to-back. Good tough green player.

And he's currently having the best season since 2004 on the greens according to strokes gained stats.

Let us get it straight. There four majors in Men's Golf. As there are four majors in Tennis. When someone asked Sandy Lyle what he thought the difference was between his 85 Open and 87 Players he answered "about 100 years".
Great event, some great holes (16th is one of my all time top holes) but not a major. Hope they have redone the short par 4 they ruined last year. My money is in Jason Day.

Can't remember where I read it but one pro was asked about changing the PGA and Players in terms of majors. He answered that someone gets to go tell Jack that his five PGA's don't count anymore

That's exactly correct.  Based on strength of field, it's the most major tournament of the year.  But, it's not a "Major".
