I know that the 5X is supposedly longer of the tee but is it really? Thank you as always...

The X is for me, but we are not talking by much at all.  The regular TP is an excellent ball.  On shorter courses I like the TP better for control. Just depends on your need.

Given how close all the top balls are today sometimes a few yards less with better control will help more then distance will.

With so much competition between OEMs these days, pretty much all tour level balls go the maximum allowable USGA & R&A ball speed, even 2 piece balls.

I have played both.  Started with the TP5x and loved the distance and height off the irons.  Last week I switched to the TP5 and was expecting a much lower flight and maybe shorter.  This was the not the case.

IMHO, these are the longest balls I have played off the tee.  Not 20 longer, just "huh...that got up there on that swing?  Wow!"  The thing that I now love is that I feel I am getting the same performance with the TP5 as I did with Tp5X just, for me, a better feel.  I didn't hate the TP5x feel, I just like the TP5 better.  I also like how both operate around the green.  They both seem to be in a higher "window" when I look up in comparison to other balls (Chrome Soft, Prov1).

I am excited to start this season with a ball I have full confidence in!

Thanks, Kris.

Rick Shiels got higher ball speed (and marginally lower spin) with TP5x:

Yet Martin Hopley got way less spin with same ball speed:

I really love the ball flight of the x off the driver, particularly in the wind, but there was a time when I thought the TP5 was the best ball ever made, so can't really go wrong with either.  I think it's somewhat safe to say that for most folks with typical launch conditions on consistent strikes, the TP5x should eek out just a bit more distance for them, given they are not already too low spin with driver.

They were identical for me regarding performance. These, the chrome soft, b330s and fg tour and smell red were all within a yard of each other. Height varied a little but total distance was the same.

How does the TP5 (not x) feel compression wise compared to the Pro V1?

IMO only, TP5 feels softer but spins little less.

I still have some Tour Pref X (2 gen's ago) and compared them to the TP5X this weekend.  Honestly on the course there was nothing between them at all. It came down to the hit/impact.  Everything else was the same. Within yards of each off the tee. Same with irons, spun the same and putted the same

Edit:  No expert but pretty much if your a good ball striker all the balls are close to the same, just want fits you best.

Carry distance will be within a small dispersion circle of each other for most balls.   Any big difference in overal distance will usually come from landing angle and course conditions.  For example, a mid-lower flying model may come in at a shallower landing angle on sunbaked fairways and run an additional 15-20 yards over a higher flying model that has a steeper landing angle.  Both will carry within a 3-6 yard circle if same swing is put on both balls.  Pretty much every OEM test has shown this.

And the TP5 flies a bit higher.

I doubt there is any distance between them. Same as Z-stars, V1s, Chromes etc.

I couldn't tell but for me, the TP5 gets bullied by the wind.  TP5X is a little more resistant.

I have played both TP5 and TP5X and I have not seen any significant difference, maybe a few yards. the feel of the TP5 is really good around the greens tho!

Both balls off the tee are great.  The TP5 in many reviews has shown just about the same spin but a little less ball speed for some.  If having to choose between the two, I would go with the TP5 with the softer feel and added green side control.

Tp5x linger off the tee ... harder to control around greens.

I've hit the 5x, and its an awesome ball. got a box of the TP5s i'm playing this weekend. Hoping to get more control around the greens.
but i also have new sticks in the bag, so i'll have to see how they work.
