I am presently interested in a set of 693's but for some reason I can't see the grain on the club.  The clubs look like they have more of a matte finish and maybe they were painted.  I asked the seller if I can see the grain and he answered that there is no visible grain.  Can it be true?  It looks like the heads were painted that way.  What do you think, guys?  Are these woods worth buying, and how much would you pay

Looks like grain is visible under the tommy armour stamp on the driver. A lot of times if the stain is very dark it can hide the grain.

If these are old enough some stain had an additional pigment added to it to almost make it like paint but still have a stained appearance under shellac. It looks like there is some wood grain on the faces.

They look to be in beautiful condition. How much is the seller asking for them? Persimmon Woods can go as low as $1-$5 each up to hundreds of dollars each depending on maker, model, year, overall condition and of course availability. If I was a Tommy Armour enthusiast I would be comfortable paying as high as $15 each. But I’m not someone with which you should judge by because I have almost no experience with this model Woods.

Use a strong flashlight on the stained surface to try and see the grain.

The seller wants $300 for both.  The only thing unique about the driver is that there is no lead backweight, so I assume that the head was perfect when it was first finished.

I see it now, thanks.  It looks like the grain pattern is what I am looking for (i.e., perfectly vertical horseshoes).  However, I wonder if these woods were originally painted that way to hide the grain.  I recall reading somewhere that if a wooden clubhead turned out to be horrid in terms of grain pattern when finished, the club company would simply paint the head black.  Maybe this is somewhat the case with these two woods?

Unless someone here could validate the rarity and value there’s no way on gods green earth I would pay $300 for them, in any case. They would need to hold a value of at least double that to be worth it. IMHO

I have to add for these I would pay no more than $15 each. I’m a bargain hunter and would only purchase a persimmon club to resell.

boudreau-

These are TA 693s, and some work has been done to them.   Reg. Nos missing?

They should have a pedigree to go along with that price, but again, some people are paying $$$ for a putter cover.
