So I found a great deal on some L flex shafts. I was wondering if I should tip them on the long side meaning they want a 7 iron tipped 1.5 inches then cut to length. I was wondering should I only cut the tip 1 inch to make it play a touch softer for my 8 year old son. Or should I tip them by what the oem says to do.

They won't play right once you cut so much off the butt. I wouldn't trim more than 2"-2.5" from standard ladies length. Any more than that and I would go with  Flynn or US Kids shafts.

I also say tip them based on OEM specs. If they need more flex then a ladies flex then your using the wrong shaft and most likely irons.  Lots of ladies swing less then 60 mph so chances are the flex is probably ok for 8 year old boy.

My younger daughter has the new US kids tour series and the shafts are are lot stiffer then the ultralight they replaced. I would say there more like a L flex then junior flex.  We upgraded because it was obvious that the ultralight clubs were simply too light for her swing speed.

Yeah, cause cutting 4 extra inches from the butt doesn't change the flex at all.

Are you talking about Steell shafts or graphite?

The tip changes the flex more then anything on modern shafts I was told that by a few Shaft manufactures when I asked them in the past.

The flex is important  but not as important other factors such as overall weight.  A shaft too stiff may not go as high but if hit well and the correct speed will still go almost as far. Over all weight is a much bigger issue because it effects there swing speed.
