I started playing golf in the mid 1980's while in college.  I made my first and only hole in one  about 1 year after I started playing.  I still have that ball, a scuffed, well used Pinnacle.

Unless the scuff is actually a tear and there is a chunk missing or flapping around the ball stays in play. If I was a tour pro and got free balls then Iíd replace it.

Golf ball death sentence is my swing + water in play.  Very irritating to hit a virgin golf ball off the tee into the drink.  So for that reason I prefer a scuffed golf ball on water holes.

Have made one hole in one.  165 yds, forced carry over water.  You guessed it scuffed Titleist DT Solo.

Light scuffs barely effect the performance,  but have noticed some weird ball flight from a severely scuffed ball, so would take those out of play.

Not the etiquette forum I know.. but are you allowed to mark your ball on the green and replace it with one that isn't scuffed?

That's really only the time id care I think.

I'm nowhere near as competent as the experts we have on this site but I believe you MUST play the entire hole out with the same ball UNLESS there is a Rule allowing for substitution of the ball.

From this rule (http://www.usga.org/...s.html#!rule-05):

A ball is unfit for play if it is visibly cut, cracked or out of shape. A ball is not unfit for play solely because mud or other materials adhere to it, its surface is scratched or scraped or its paint is damaged or discolored.

So, it looks like the USGA doesn't consider a scuff to be significant enough to take the ball out of play during a hole unless there is also a cut in the ball.

Correct. A scuff would not be a reason for changing the ball.

Compare to when a pitcher throws the ball in dirt in baseball. The ump always gives the pitcher a new ball.

What’s the comparison? If you hit a ball in the bunker do you swap it out immediately?

Also the game of baseball doesn't have the 5min 'walk' to the next hole while you clean the ball up. Easier for the umps to give a new ball rather than check for scuffing.
Oh, and a baseball pitcher uses his hands for small manipulations of ball spin. We use a crooked hook-bat to smack the ball in the air

Depends on the scuff. I will usually change out though, if in my head, there is any question.

Here's the ruling on switching out a scuffy ball on the green...

"A player may only substitute a different ball for his ball in play on the putting green if the ball has become unfit for play during the play of that hole – see Rule 5-3.

A ball is considered to be unfit for play if it is visibly cut, cracked or out of shape. Additionally, a ball is not unfit for play solely because mud or other materials adhere to it, its surface is scratched or scraped or its paint is damaged or discolored – see Rule 5-3.

Therefore, in the example your provided, it appears the ball is not unfit for in which case you are not permitted to substitute a new ball. You are allowed to use a new ball when starting the next hole.

Thank you for your interest in the Rules of Golf, which can be found on the USGA’s web site at www.rulesofgolf.com or with the Rules of Golf Mobile App for iOS and Android. Additionally, we invite you to learn more about our Rules Modernization initiative, at www.usga.org/golfrules2019.

Depends on the scuff. When I first bought my Callaway wedge with the Mack Daddy grooves they were razor sharp and mauled balls right through to the second layer. Very annoying if you're just playing your second hole with a premium ball. At my home course we have power lines across some holes and if you hit them it's a compulsory replay (without penalty). When I've hit them in the past they take a pretty good gouge out of the ball too. In those circumstances I would change the ball. Normal scuffs through normal wear and tear from normal play I would keep the ball until the 18th or until I lose it. Whichever comes first. :)

Might be true in the majors. Maybe D1 college baseball, but below that you'd run out of baseballs before the third inning. I've done LL baseball tournaments where we(me the plate umpire) got 6 balls for the DAY  for 9 games.

Iím in the camp of scuffed ball = more spin, especially with a driver. I donít need or want that, so I donít play them scuffed for very long unless Iím having a rough day of it.

As a side note, weíve got a golf ball reclaimation company on the road between my home and a client of ours....www.golfballs.net. They sell balls recovered from the water. I played their prov1x balls for 5 years when I was hitting it a ton in my late 20s early 30s. Absolutely no different than a new ball. One summer I had 8 drives over 380 and hit two drives over 400 with them....about that time I thought I should try some LD training...then Jamie Sadlowski showed up on the scene and made spending money on travel and entrance fees a really silly proposition.

Scuff makes no difference. If the ball is chunked then that will affect how it rolls on the green.

Also, I get a major kick when I can play one ball for multiple rounds. I'm used to seeing lots of wear on my pro v1s but I have never felt that a non pristine would have negative affects

Depends on the severity. If it is deep scuff and the cover is punctured then practice bag is the next location. Cosmetic scuffs can be used in bounce games and I keep a stock for visiting courses with penal rough and water. In our club we have cat 1 golfers who will use a ball until they lose it so some people are not that bothered about how a ball looks.

Based on the stories that have been told here about the Titleist plant and how they show the people that small changes to something like the dimple depth can have a big impact on the ball, I have to believe that certain things could cause issues with the ball.  I just use a feel test.  If I can't feel the scuff, cut or whatever then I keep the ball in play as it shouldn't loose much in aerodynamics if there is no difference to the cover feel.  If I can feel the scuff, cut or whatever then I'll replace it.  Usually I can go at least 18 holes with a ball, but sometimes the scuff does get really bad.

I don’t know how you guys do it.  I tried to make 2 rounds with 1 ball and after hole 33 I couldn’t take it anymore! Retired her and with the new ball went birdie-par on first 2 holes.  Mentally I think 1 round should be my max . Here is the ball after 33 holes IMG_1525999204.571847.jpg IMG_1525999213.354901.jpg
