Hey all,

Looking to buy a range finder as one of my friends I play with has one and after playing a few rounds with him, I don't know how I ever played without having one around. Don't want to mooch off him forever, and I have a few questions, as I want to make the most educated purchase I can.

1. Do all range finders take the slope of the shot into account when measuring distances?

2. What brands are the best brands and what brands are "bang for your buck" brands?

3. Anyone bought used before?

4. What else do I need to know?

Ideally, I'm looking for a good price for something that allows me to know the yardage to a target with the slope factored in. That's really it. And i wouldn't expect anything more for not wanting to pay top dollar.

Thank you!

Not all rangefinders calculate slope. Of course the models with slope are considerably more expensive.

Iíve bought a used laser here on the BST and have had no issues.

Leupold and Bushnell are the big names and the only ones Iíve used personally.

Currently using an old GX1 and find it more than sufficient.

1) Nope. And if you're playing in USGA tournaments, you need to be able to turn off the slope feature. I don't have this on mine, and I don't miss it... often harder to judge the wind than how much uphill or downhill a shot is.

2) Bushnell is generally regarded as the best, but there are many brands out there (as you probably know)

3) Never bought used, but my buddy bought one on eBay and has had no issues with his

4) I use the Bushnell Tour V3 w/Jolt and I love it. Just make sure you carry spare a spare battery in your bag. They last quite a few rounds, but last thing you want is it dying on the course and no replacement battery around.

After looking into it after this i'm looking at the Precision Pro NX7. Seems to be reasonably priced and get's the job done based on what i've read. no slope but that's ok. Any experience with this model?

I bought one about a month ago and have had zero issues. Mine works really well.

A few years ago I purchased one and after using it wondered what took me so long to get one. I don't have the slope feature as you cannot use it in tournaments and I don't want to get dependent on it.

Any more info on buying used lasers? I really would like one to use on the courses that don't identify pin placement to use in conjunction with my GPS to figure out where a flag is positioned on the green.

I can't afford any of the brand name stuff new, so I'm considering buying used. Really worried though I'll end up with a dud.

I'd feel better about a new one of the "challenger" brands than a used one. Precision Pro is a sponsor here I believe. Check groupon/living social. They'll often have some good options + cash back on ebates is 9% right now.

There are a lot of threads on the forums with peoples experience using different brands. I don't think there were many outright "bad" models. I will say as a new rangefinder user this year, there is no going back and I would 100% recommend it as the first piece of equipment to add if you don't have one.

I guess it comes down to a used Bushnell X2 vs a brand new Caddytek or Precision Pro, etc. All the more expensive models seem to be favored from a pure performance point... but I do worry a used one will stop working quickly then I've wasted $200+.

I sold an older bushnell (V2 I think) for $200 and bought a new Caddytek with slope for $150 last year.  Easiest $50 I ever made.  The Caddytek is more then fine, and now I have slope.

If you're looking for reasonably priced models, the Golf Buddy LR5 is a good simple one.  They're $139 from most places when you Google it.  I've been using one since l last year; it doesn't do slope so just rely on your judgement after that.

I'd only caution you if you're shopping on Amazon for a rangefinder; there's a lot of knockoff type products out there and honestly don't think it's worth the money taking a chance to save a few bucks.

I bought the Caddytek. Everywhere I look it has great reviews and it's cheaper than even a used Bushnell. I don't need Jolt... and what's a few extra seconds to find the flag?

I've owned a Leupold GX2 for years...and it was great.  It had slope and was very accurate.  It just died about a month ago and I had the dilemma of buying a new one.  At first, I wanted to get either Leupold or Bushnell...and thought about used to keep it affordable ($200-$250), but after reading a lot of reviews...I bought a Precision Pro NX7 Pro (has slope).  It's been great...no regrets...BUY ONE.

Definitely 2nd the Precision Pro.  Great customer service and products are a great value.  They are typically on this forum also, or you can contact them directly with questions.  I have an older Bushnell today, and would go to Precision Pro if I needed a replacement.  Also have a couple of buddies with them and they are very happy.

I can also vouch for Precision Pro.  My schools athletic booster club bought our golf teams 6 of them a few years ago and they are still going strong.  No complaints at all.

Just pulled the Trigger on the NX7 Pro. have to say getting a reply directly from the company on my post put me over the edge to buy from you. as well as seeing all you reply's on other threads to golfers. Can't wait for it to come on Friday or Saturday!

That's awesome! We hope you love your new NX7 Pro!

Also, you might be interested in reviewing our Precision Care Package so you can see all the benefits that come with becoming part of the Precision Pro Golf family. ;) Thanks again!

wish i could trade in my bushnell for one of your products!
