There was period of time when I thought that:
CareerBuilder Challenge is tournament where, alongside established PGA Tour players, can also play young talented golfers without PGA Tour membership to build their career :D
Barracuda Championship is sponsored by motorcycle company https://www.barracudamoto.com/
Greenbrier Classic is sponsored by some Brie cheese manufacturer
Zurich Classic of New Orleans is sponsored by Swiss city Zurich

I know, sounds little weird and dumb, but I was so confident about it that it took me quite a long time to find out reality.

At one time the Masters was thought to promote an intermediate post-graduate degree (only for men) - lots of people didn't enter out of confusion and field got to be very limited.  Emeritus status for winners only perpetuated the problem.

Oh OP, you just can't be serious.

I  totally got the name the Masters when Sergio hit 5 balls in a row on the green and the ball rolled back into the water. He mastered that unfortunate shot.

At one time the Phoenix Open was the FBR Open, a span of maybe 5 years or so. For several years the local media played up the angle of “what is fbr?”  The sarcasm and intentional obliviousness led to them not renewing the agreement. Some of their corporate folks felt disrespected to the point they said eff it. This paved the way for WM to exploit the clusterfudge of an event and create what we have today.

I remember as a kid wondering why the heck anyone would name a PGA Tour event after a comic strip.  The BC Open.

https://en.wikipedia.../wiki/B.C._Open

The tournament was played at the En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott in Upstate New York for every event through 2005.

It was named after the comic strip B.C., created by Johnny Hart, who was born and raised in Endicott. Johnny Hart's B.C. characters were used in advertising the event.

Yeah I saw that.  Broome County Open then they apparently latched onto the comic strip as a 'hook' I guess.  I don't recall ever seeing it on TV as I believe it was played same week as the British Open?  Not sure.  Must have felt great to win it while the hot shots were across the pond.  Rake in some cash and get some exempt time.

For a long time the BC Open was played in September. That changed in 2000 when it was moved to July.

I'm confused if Charlie Hoffman is still the waste management frontman.  He is still wearing green, and still looks like an old school garbage man, so I am wondering.

The Northern Trust...what about the Southern, Eastern, and Western !?!

Barbasol was a former LPGA golfer who was banned for using shaving cream on her grips.

Valspar was another former LPGA golfer who was also banned for painting her grips.
