I have a work trip coming up and was going to see about playing No. 2 as a single.  I wonít be staying at the resort, and a Sunday may be my only shot.  Any insight or tips on how to improve my chances?  Thanks

Just give them a call and see what happens. Should not have any problems though.

It depends. I was in the pro shop when a guy walked in asking to play no 2 as a single.

The pro shop guy offered him, 1,4 or 5.  He said he wanted no 2.  The guy kinda snarkly replied.

You can choose 1,4 or 5.  He didn't say anything about an outing or it being full.

But as phone call certainly won't cost anything.

I was just talking to someone last week about this as I will be there in June playing some of the other courses in the area and thinking of trying to get on No.2.

I was informed to check in a few days early to see what is "potentially" available for a single and then show up early the day of play.  My understanding is there typically is a a few single slots available depending on the day (mid week being best).  Not sure if true or not but was told that a single can only book 24 hrs before on No.2 if not at the resort?

Like a few others have said, call and ask.  From what I understand, a couple of the courses at Pinehurst are reserved each day for member play.  They rotate that allocation, so its possible that CarolinaGolfer was there on a day when #2 was reserved for members.  And if you can't get on #2 for some reason, play Dormie Club or Pine Needles or Mid Pines, those are all outstanding courses.

Its a crapshoot. Can't hurt to call and ask. But, it is one of the busier times of the year at the resort.

Thanks guys.  I called this AM and was informed that they do appear to have some single openings this Sunday afternoon.  But at close to $600 if you include caddie and tip I need to think about it.  My wife is actually the one pushing me to do it.   I am going to call back tomorrow and ask about #8 as another option.

#8 is a fine challenging course too, with a lot of the flavor of Donald Ross, you won't be disappointed if you play there.  On the other hand, it would be a shame to let your wife down.....

Do it.  Last week I had the fortune to play 2, 8 and 9 with caddies.  The Deuce was the pinnacle for me (though I really enjoyed No. 9 also but the Donald Ross house doesn't sit on that course :) and No. 8 was our first round/warm up since we haven't played since November).  We stayed at the resort so the up-charge was less, but I would still say it's worth it if you have the chance and can afford it.  The history combined with the quality of that course is spectacular.  (And, if requesting a caddie, I highly recommend Derek, Leroy or Ozzie (Don)).

Every time Iíve been to Pinehurst #2 was always busy (weekdays). When I also played 7 and 8 they were both wide open. You stated playing on a weekend which probably makes it tougher to get on. Maybe if itís a rainy day there might be some cancellations. My guess is Pinehurst might be like Pebble Beach or other top notch resorts and give preference to their guests for times. Good luck.

If you strike out on #2, go play Mid Pines.  I've played both several times, Mid Pines will give you all the Ross challenges that 2 offers.  Mid Pines is a classy old style Ross course its really a gem.  Before playing Mid Pines a few times #9 was my favorite course in the area, I'm thinking Mid Pines has taken that spot now.  I was just there 2 weekends ago with some friends from back home.  We played #3, Pine Needles and Mid Pines, all 3 old school Ross courses. My friends who had never played any of the 3 walk away from Mid Pines with the same feelings I have, its special.

I played #2 as a non-resort guest single last May during the week of graduation and the day before the USGA four ball. This is how...

Call Pinehurst starting tower as soon as they open the day before you want to play. They wouldnít let me book more than 24hrs out. Hours 7-11a est

910-295-3186

910-295-6811 operator

Got on by calling. Was able to make 0730 tee time. $480 + $65 caddie + $70 tip.

It was an amazing experience. I was the first one off and made the first footprints in the dew. I thought it was expensive but worth every penny.

Iíve done it 4x- itís easy. Call the starter house at 7am and they will get you on. Itís pricy $450-$500, but you will get on and likely play with members

Looks like I may have to try during the week now.  My flight situation got messed up so I am going to try and Play UNC Finley when I get in, then make my way down and hope something works out during the week.

Also would highly recommend Lonnie Poole / the NC State course. We played it on our last trip down and really loved it, great Arnold Palmer design.

Yes, at what it costs to play as a walk up it needs to be worth it to you as a golfer to have played #2. As others have said there is an abundance of great golf and other Ross designs that are just as fun to play. So, if paying that amount keeps you from enjoying the round then go play Mid-Pines/Pine Needles.

Worst case scenario, you're playing golf in good weather on a great course.

I did it a couple of years ago on a work trip, called ahead and was told to call the morning of and they had a spot for me around 12:00.

Yes $600+ but I wasn't paying for the flight, the car or the hotel so I was able to convince myself it was worth the experience.

And if you're looking for a good Palmer design in Pinehurst, give MidSouth a visit.  The did a bunch of work last summer, the greens are brand new and perfect.

#2 is overpriced. Unless it’s a bucket list course there are better option.

It may be tough to play 2 without staying and booking well in advance.  And golfheaven is right. It is overpriced. If you have a full Sunday you should try midpines and or pine needles. I liked mid pines more personally, but pine needles might arguably be the more renouned of the two.

After you play, enjoy a cold beer in the pine needles bar that overlooks both 1 and 18. Or go over to #2 and have a drink on the back porch of the clubhouse. Watch golfers hopelessly miss the 18th green. It's a tough finishing hole. It is very crowned. But it's amazing to sit in the rocking chair and enjoy people coming in.
