The Chicago area has tons of excellent public golf available.  Ravisloe, listed above, is a cult favorite, but not one of my favorites.  Where in Chicago are you staying, and do you have access to a car?  Some of my favorites are, Cantigny Golf and Prairie Landing in the western suburbs.  Closer in is Harborside, which is a 36 hole facility.  In the northern burbs, Shepherd's Crook and Thunderhawk are excellent choices.  It all depends on your budget and how far you want to drive.

These are just a handful of suggestions.  I'm sure somebody will have more.

When is your birthday? Chicago has some excellent public courses, but we're having a miserable spring, and there are some courses I would not recommend at this time.

We're having a great and extended Christmas season!  During your visit, you can ice skate at Millenium Park, see all the Christmas decorations on Michigan Avenue and of course, see all the museums.

At the rate we're going, golf season will be August 17 from 10A - 4P.

It's warmer in Anchorage than Chiberia right now.

Just play Harborside. All listed are good recommendations but if you are from out of town Iím guessing you donít want to sit in traffic for 2 hours which would cross Cantigny off the list. Harborside isnít the greatest but you will remember it which I canít say about Ravisloe. Play early at Harborside

I'll never understand the reasoning behind this. For this season they changed the policy on the Maple Meadows course to allow singles to book with an existing twosome or threesome, but continued the old policy on The Preserve. I guess my money isn't green enough for them.

Agree completely.  They have a ton of capacity tomorrow and while it will probably be very easy to walk on, it'd be nice to be able to plan. Even the NaperHell courses allow singles to book now.

North - Thunderhawk, Shepherds Crook, or Sportsmans or Glen Club
West - Mt. Prospect or Stonewell Orchard (kinda north ish but far)
South - Cantigny
Close to city - Harborside is really only option unless you have private club hook ups
Historical - Canal shores (dumpy little track in Evanston) or Ravisloe (fun but far)

Sir Cantigny in Wheaton is west of the city.  It's south of Wisconsin though.

Cantigny south? Wheaton is the epitome of a western burb.

Balmoral Woods is south. Cog Hill is Southwest.

If you do want to play Ravisloe you could look into the train schedule depending on where you're staying. A fun course right in Chicago is a 9 holer right on lake michigan called Sydney Marovitz.  The condition of the course is nothing to brag about but it's an unbelievable piece of property that makes you wonder how you're in Chicago. The downside? It takes forever to play 9 holes (unless you get off early af).

If you're a boxgroove member it opens up some CC options (Idlewild comes to mind).

Stonewall Orchard is a fantastic course, even hosting numerous US Open qualifiers, but just about to the wisconsin border.  The Glen Club is a great recommendation as well.  Harborside looks great, but ive personally never played.  Thunderhawk and Shepherds Crook are nice as well, but also far north.

So another place #4 consider treating yourself is Cog Hill #4. It's a bit overpriced but it's a great course and there is no waiting... The place is completely empty most days (even weekends). So if pace of play is at a premium, I'd consider heading down 55 and playing Dubsdread.

I'll never understand the reasoning behind this. For this season they changed the policy on the Maple Meadows course to allow singles to book with an existing twosome or threesome, but continued the old policy on The Preserve. I guess my money isn't green enough for them.

I talked to the people at the Preserve at Oak Meadows and while they planned to have the same policy at the Preserve as at Oak Meadows there have been computer difficulties, so the on-line system is not cooperating.

A single can call directly to The Preserve within 24 hours and get added to a two-some or three-some.

Thought I'd come on here to point that out.

So while they plan to get online same day bookings of singles with two-some/threesome, currently that is on hold based on software issues...

Good to know that singles can call and be added to a twosome/threesome at least at the Preserve.

Lol. It's 2018 for crying out loud. Call? Day of only?

Over 100 Chicagoland courses allow singles to book online in advance. It's not rocket science.

I'm thinking of playing as a single at Prairie Landing on 5/14 and Blackstone on 5/17.  Anyone see issues with this, other than length of journey?  We're staying in West Loop and will do two same-day rentals to avoid the ridiculous parking charges in that area.

I'm thinking of playing as a single at Prairie Landing on 5/14 and Blackstone on 5/17.  Anyone see issues with this, other than length of journey?  We're staying in West Loop and will do two same-day rentals to avoid the ridiculous parking charges in that area.

Other than the long drives, that's a reasonable combo. My only nit would be the the two courses are a bit similar, i.e. prairie-style layouts. I'd swap Cantigny for one of them, as it's a parkland style layout.
