Heck, that's nothing...Jim Furyk bought a putter for $39 and used it to win the FedEx Cup. :-)

I always enjoy Sheil’s  videos. But geez, he should mix in a few putter lessons from someone as he skids the ball 6 to 10 inches before it even starts rolling end over end. Just sayin’ :-)
Love the new Laguna. Probably going in the bag this week.

I love Scotty's putters but i wonder if the sky rocket prices in his custom shop is an indication the last couple of new OTR lines haven't done as well off the shelf.

Ive noticed that many more SC owners are having their putters customized and I’d guess it most likely means the Custom Shop is just busier. Time vs labor vs money. If business WAS down the custom shop volume would not be even a “popcorn fart in the breeze” to make up any shortfall at retail worldwide.

I like Scotty’s and I don’t think they’re overpriced. Would never personally buy any putter new though.

I have a few SC’s but I’ve got an Odyssey in my bag  :)

I just sent in two Scottys a few weeks ago to be regrip and stamped, but I did noticed that the price has changed for the grips (Baby T ) from $15 to $37 as of today.

I wonder how much money Steve Stricker's old putter has made him?

I putted well with a golo 5 for a while... Missed short putts left because the face stayed closed.
I putted well with a betti studio stock 2 for a while... Missed short putts right because the face stayed open sometimes. Maybe it was the oversized grip i had on it.
Have a Seemore FGP now, miss so few short putts!

I wont lie, i held out for so long before getting the right putter for me because i was gaming a scotty or a betti.
Worth the 6-8 hundred or so dollars spent to miss the short putts left and right to hold onto the status symbol???

I thought not!

Its cool to own a scotty or a betti, and its fun to get wrapped up in the aftermarket head covers, but end of the day if the 5 dollar garage sale flat rake knocks em in. Do your thing!!

Same here on the inserts. I recently ended up with the 2014 Fastback model because the 2018 uses an insert.

I actually bought one of the Cleveland Huntington Beach putters because they are one piece milled face putters. They seem to be very solid performers for the price. But they do seem to have a very soft milled face. With my HB #4 I tend to leave some putts short when using a really soft ball. I wish I could have found a Huntington Beach #11 to try before I got my SC.

$400 seems like a lot. I’m not buying all of the technology stuff. Apparently the sound has been improved but the insert still feels cheap and clicky when I try one. They look great, but I wish they had more options. Now all the select models have a sight line. I personally don’t like a sight line, and there’s no way to take it off. So no reason for me to want one now. If there were some more options I feel like they might sell more. Some like black putters, some really don’t want an insert, some don’t like the sight lines. For people that already know what they want in a putter, this “one look/feel fits all” approach doesn’t really work. I’d love to see him make some Newport styles, with no sight lines, and just a milled face-along with what he already has. At that point, I could see $400 if you’re getting the style you want.

Seems fairly consistent with the price of other niche milled putter heads like Betti, Pirerrti, EVNROLL, etc. People are obviously willing to pay that much or else the prices wouldn't be going that high.

Things are only "overpriced" if it's not priced at a profit maximumizing price point.  And I doubt that's the case.

Most putters are priced fairly high in relation to a reasonable mark up over their cost of production. Cameron mainstream putters are no exception to this. Most golfers could likely do as well with a $50 dollar putter (that fit their putting stroke fairly well) as with a $500 dollar putter. I really think many are buying confidence in the putter through perceived (not actual) club excellence when they buy brands like Cameron at the prices they are offered.

As a footnote... I'm going to single out Cleveland who seems to be able to make darn fine putters year after year at very reasonable prices.

I think this is pretty accurate.  I see no problem with buying confidence though, I’m fine with that myself, but I agree something like a Cleveland putter with a nice milled face is absolutely going to equal the performance of a similar Scotty.  I’d still buy a Scotty or a custom putter over a Cleveland because I know I’ll enjoy it more...but I don’t beleive it’s going to perform better for me.

Those Cleveland’s are actually really nice for $100, best putter value around for sure!

If you putt, say, 28 times per round, and hit driver 14 times per round, which is over-priced: the $400 putter or the $400 driver?

If you are asking strictly which is more over priced then I'd still say the putter... with the Driver there is a shaft cost to consider.... not so much in the putter.
But I think what you really are asking about is which has greater utility value, but that digresses from the question of being over priced. Imo you have to compare putters to putters, you can't really compare them to a different club and talk about price comparison. Either way though a $50 bottle opener doesn't become less over priced because you open thousands of bottles with it per year, right?

Its just not Scotty Cameron's that are overpriced, but all golf equipment, but we buy them anyways.  $50 for a box of Titleist Pro V1s?  $400 for most drivers?  $150 for a nice sand wedge?  I remember when Sun Mountain bags were under $100.  Now they're well over $200.

15 years ago, the premium putter market was dominated by Cameron and in a way, it still is.  You either had a $120 Odyssey, Ping Ansr or a $300 Cameron.   But there are more and more choices for people who want to spend a lot of money on a putter these days.  If a company like Kronos can charge $580 for a putter, then I think Scotty Cameron and Titleist can charge $400.

If Cameron were a grateful man, he'd be paying these premium mark-up royalties to a Mr. TW. Honestly, I don't see the market for this without a powerful persona creating all the hype for the manufacturer. He basically built the brand with his fandom and dominance of the sport on the course. If Tiger had used a TP Mills Mizuno we'd probably still be discussing a similar matter, only with Mills at the center and not Don....

That's why Titleist paid him tens of millions of dollars. Tiger Woods would have had the same success with his Anser 2 and MP-29s.

My tried about 3 scottys. Sold them all (for near what I bought them for... so good value!).

Bought a cameron long neck as a toy. Like it but it's not my gamer. Was gaming something else but somehow my cleveland classic 2 (#9 headshape) just moved itself back into my bag despite not fitting my sbst stroke at all.

Cleveland is as good as it gets at putter value

If my Studio Stainless was stolen out of my bag, i would replace it ASAP with one just like it. Cost would not be a barrier, it's in my bag for one reason only. I make a lot of putts with it. Got nothing to do with Tiger Woods or aome boutique putter collecter.

Just buy one other new or used that fits your putting stroke, get a grip you like, throw some paint on it, and don't take it out of the bag. Thats what makes them worth it. I used to go through a putter a year before I got my Cameron off Craigslist. I can't tell you how many "cheaper" putters I have bought and never really established a relationship with them. I got my Newport 2 in 2008 and its still in the bag and it isn't going anywhere.

I have to agree though, I do not care for the new ones with the inserts...

The analogy he used with watches was perfect. A $50 Timex tells times just as effectively as a $4,000 Rolex, but that doesn't necessarially mean the Rolex is overpriced.

Some people like spending the extra money for the quality/feel/look/timelessness, others don't give a s***.

I just like the way many of them look. If I like the look, there's a chance I'll try it.  That's the nice thing about Scottys. Maybe they are overpriced, who knows. But there is no disputing that they maintain value better than most any other clubs. When I buy that one because I like how it looks, but find out it doesn't work for me at all, there is a strong probability I'm going to able to recoup most of my purchase price.
