Not sure if this the correct place to post this.

This is not meant to be a cocky post. Just thought people here would appreciate this.

A few weeks ago I was priviliged enough to get to play Muirfield. Spent a whole weekend there and played 5 and a half rounds in three days time. It was one of the greatest golf experiences of my life. Normal play there is foursomes/alternate shot (no three or fourballs allowed). You go round in 3 hours normally, put on a jacket and tie, have a three course roast lunch (with plenty of alcoholic beverages), and then head out for another 18 in the afternoon. There's guys there that do that twice every weekend, weather permitting.

Pics aren't the best quality as they were made with my phone.

Very cool - thanks for posting the pictures.  Did you play with a member?  If not, how did you manage to play on non-visitor days?

That's great - I know who I need to makes friends with now! ;-)

I'll actually be in Scotland in early July to play in and around St. Andrews.  Did you play any other courses in the area?

Also, are you from the Netherlands?  I will be staying near Dusseldorf for a few weeks in mid/late June and was wondering whether there are any good courses in the western part of Germany or neighbouring countries.  If you have any tips, I would appreciate it.

I played St Andrews Old and New a couple of years ago on a golf trip with my dad and brother. We went on a bit of a pilgrimage and also played Carnoustie. Great experience.

I can only speak for the Dutch courses just across the border from Dusseldorf. De Herkenbosche golf club is pretty little parkland lay out just across the border. Just stay out of the heather and you'll have a nice round for 80 to 100 euros. If you don't mind a bit of a drive the Eindhovensche golfclub is a little farther away and another great parkland lay out. It's one of the oldest courses in the Netherlands. It hosts the Dutch International Amatuer championship every year in August so it definitely has some pedigree and teeth (it will set you back about 125 to 150 euros, but if you e-mail the club they can set you up with a member who'll introduce you and get you on for half that).
There are some nice courses near Maastricht, like Rijk van Maargraten, that I haven't played but I hear good things about. The south of the Netherlands is known for its hospitality and most of the courses have good deals for rounds during weekdays.

Great pics!  Muirfield is one of my favorite courses in the world. I was just there at the beginning of March right after the reopened from an epic snow storm.

Do they always leave the bleachers up? I'm gonna try to play there next Summer but will probably only have 2. Any tips to avoid paying for a foursome?

No, I played there last May, no bleachers/stands. Try emailing the club secretary. I was a single when I was trying to play there and she accommodated me by putting with a threesome.

Playing there this summer the week of the Open, cannot wait!

How is the mid day lunch with the members? From all I have read it seems to be a very memorable experience playing there.

No. They put them up around a month before they host the Open Championship and take them down promptly after the event. These potos were from the last week that the course was open for play tovisitors preceding the Open Championship.
I did tip my hat to the phantom crowds as I walked my way down the 18th fairway

My experience there was different from the OPís. We played traditional four balls (foursome over here) in the a.m. with everyone paying their own ball. The afternoon outings was then played alternate shot.

Being a single I wasnít to keen on possibly being paired with a stranger for the alternate shot. The day I played I was joined by 2 Japanese men and the wife of one of them. Only the husband spoke much English. Plus, I would have had to stay for the lunch which required a sport coat and tie. With the wife and daughter waiting to do some sightseeing, I passed on the lunch and afternoon session.

Great photos, and it sounds like a great time to play with members.  There's a chance I'll get to play Muirfield when I'm in Scotland in June, and I was curious about one thing.  When you say you "put on jacket and tie", do you mean you essentially tied the tie on over your golf shirt, and the jacket over that, or did you change into a proper dress shirt?  Either works for me, I just want to be properly prepared.

They will provide a locker so you can change. You can't wear sneakers, golf shoes or sunglasses  in the dining room.

Not sure your exact dates, but looking at their site, a slot (albeit starting on 10th tee) has opened up on June 5th.

"I don't agree 100% with your analysis.  Yes, it's nice to hole out, which I did twice during last weeks game, but didn't need either to win those holes or the match.   All that was needed was a tap in to win each hole.  Of course, I was aiming from 20yds and 15yds with the intent to put the ball in the hole, but the expectation was tap-ins." I played here twice (morning & after lunch round) last July, most difficult course Iíve ever played. Iím a 4.7 hdcp, at the time I was playing closer to a 3, I shot 87- 89. (Same trip shooting 76 on the Old, 79 Turnberry, 83 Carnoustie, 77 Kingsbarns)  Rough was knee high, balls just kept disappearing where we saw them enter. I did drive the 14th green for an eagle though. My lone highlight..

Not sure your exact dates, but looking at their site, a slot (albeit starting on 10th tee) has opened up on June 5th.
Thanks, unfortunately we'll be in town a couple weeks later, the potential date is Thrusday, 21 June.  Or whatever the nearest open day for visitors is.  My buddy the trip planner is keeping in touch with the club, just keeping my fingers crossed.

Gotcha. If he's a touch devious, he shouldn't tell you guys where you are playing that Thursday and you don't find out until you get in the car ;)
I'm playing next door at Renaissance Club, so was just looking at other potential options if the weather is going to be nice and happened to see that time.

"I don't agree 100% with your analysis.  Yes, it's nice to hole out, which I did twice during last weeks game, but didn't need either to win those holes or the match.   All that was needed was a tap in to win each hole.  Of course, I was aiming from 20yds and 15yds with the intent to put the ball in the hole, but the expectation was tap-ins." Our innkeeper mentioned he could arrange for us to play the Renaissance Club, and we chose not to.  I probably would have, but with 4 guys and 4 opinions, I don't run the show.  Its honestly a nice change for me NOT to be planning everything.
