Ok guys got a question and need some advice. My son is 8 years old and is really getting into golf. He has a set he likes. He can hit his irons pretty good but the driver he has is only 350cc and its a titanium matrix construction. I was wondering would he be better off with a oem driver with a junior shaft. And my second question is this. Is he going to see any distance gains if I get him a driver like a r580xd in 12* compared to a driver like a m1 or m2 in the same loft and junior shaft. I feel that he would not have the swing speed to make a difference between the two drivers. Any info would be helpful.

What's his current driver swing speed?   Here is a decent article on junior drivers.  https://thejuniorgolfer.com/best-junior-golf-drivers/

I would go with US Kids Clubs, or something similar.
Callaway Rogue
Callaway GBB Epic 16º/20º/24º
Callaway Steelhead XR 25º
Callaway Apex CF16 6-AW
Callaway MD3/MD-PM 54º/58º

To be honest i do not know for sure what his swing speed is. If he hits his driver good 150 yards probably 135 carry if i had to guess. I just feel his driver is hurting him in accuracy and distance.

Yes get him an OEM if he hitting it that far. Difference in heads is preference and weight if you ask me.  My daughter switched to OEM gained some distance 10-15 yards plus a lot more consistent. She has a Ping G SF 12 with a Flynn shaft.  eBay is your friend for junior drivers :) I wouldn't get an US Kids driver.

Ok. I am going to get him a oem driver. But my main question is is he going to gain anything out of a newer driver like a taylormade m1 over a older driver like a r580xd driver. is my question.

I would research the weight of the various OEM heads and the shaft weight. I would go with a very light overall setup and a light head (maybe use lightweight Winn grip).

One of the big advantages going with a newer driver is the adjustable hosels.  It makes it really convenient and easy to swap shafts as the kid grows.  My son has an M2, and we've already gone through 3 different shafts for him in the past 16 months he's had it.  Flynn golf sells shafts with the adaptors ready to go so it's really easy.

That age difference I would say yes.  I would get newer technology due to how light adult heads are these days and being adjustable with growth spurts.

I dont want to shell out a ton of money on him just yet he is just showing real interest. From doing my homework the last few hours and hearing what you guys are saying. I am thinking about getting him the HT Max-J junior set 5x2 set. And thinking about getting him a 12* Tour Edge XCG5 driver and put a flynn shaft in it. what do you think.

There is a lot of info in these forums. It will take you some time to read through it.  Prevailing wind for an 8-year old is to use US Kids Golf or Flynn-Golf irons although you will find different opinions. For driver, OEM adjustable head with Flynn shaft is very popular.  Ebay is your friend or your local golf mart's used club section. My kid's first set of US Kids Golf irons cost me $30 at Play It Again sports.

I never thought about this, junior shafts for OEM heads. I'm going to do this for both my kids. That way they can grow with the club and I just need to buy shafts.

Shanks, how tall is he? You could go with a lightweight OEM head like the Callaway XR and put one of Flynn’s shafts in it. You could also look at the Cobra Junior Driver. It comes with a junior shaft and you get a free shaft upgrade as part of the deal. The shortest length they offer is 39.” That is why I asked how tall he was. I got my daughter the Cobra driver and she loves it. She got it this past summer when she was about to turn 10. She is 55” and has no trouble with the 39” driver even though US kids says it is a little long for her.

Just my two cents. My son is 8, a little over average size, and he LOVES his Callway XR16 mated to a Flynn Shaft. He carries it around 115-120 which was about a 15 yard gain over his USKids Tour Series driver.  However, the biggest difference was the consistency of the distance and accuracy. He generally goes 6-7/7 fairways and is fairly metronomish at over 130-135 for every drive total and will pop it out 150+ once or twice.  His XR16 is the high loft model so its base loft is 13.5 and we have it the full two degrees up. Research, eBay, and get the best deal/fit you can! Also, involve HIM. Confidence is a big deal so let him look at different options you think would be good. One big thing is my son loves the way his driver looks and it gives him a lot of confidence when he pulls it out of the bag.

Find him a used OEM driver.  Global golf, Steals and Deals (brand new Taylormade drivers from 2-5 years ago), Ebay.

From my experience it will really depends on the child and it is like any adult fitting unfortunately.  For my son we went through every OEM combo mentioned in the post  - M2 with flynn shaft, r15 with flynn shaft, Cobra f7 39 length, US Kids driver. Ultimately he liked the Flynn shaft with a Flynn driver head.   We bought all the OEM driver heads used on Ebay and we will probably go through the same process when he is ready for a slightly longer shaft.

I agree with one of the earlier posts; involve him in the process, its needs to be his decision as he should be positive and confident when setting up on the box.  We went this process when my son just turned 10.

At this age I am a big fan of Flynn Golf drivers. My son at that age got a big jump in distance switching from US Kids to Flynn.  The US Kids shafts were too whippy for him at that time.  One word of caution...When my son was that age I chased the distance rabbit pretty hard!!! HA!! Tried all kids of heads, shafts and lengths.  Whenever the head got a little heavy or the shaft got a little long bad things started to happen.  When in doubt, I would error on the side of a little light and a little short. I was doing most of the club building myself back then so I made plenty of mistakes.

BTW...my son is 11 and just got fitted, by a professional...for a new driver. So the chase for distance continues!!!!

We went Cobra Junior with the two shafts and just go by their setting recommendations and I don’t think he has missed a fairway in two years. You get two shafts, so we go into GG every 9 months and get fit again just to confirm the settings. We are currently on the lowest 10.5 loft and weight in the front on a 41” shaft. If he grows anymore or maxes out to around 215 yds with this setup then we will have to get custom fit for a new adult setup. But I think we have another year, possibly two. $150 for 3 years worth of OEM driver, and no chasing for anything. Just playing. It’s his most confident club in the bag.

Well my son and I hit the range today. Before we went we hit up a local play again sports. Just looking round the golf section he spotted a Ricky Fowler head cover. Under it was  Cobra Fly Z driver with a junior shaft in it. I look at the price tag thinking 150 bucks for it. Boy was I wrong 39.99 I snagged that sucker up and bought it for him. We went to the range and of course he wanted to hit it. But it was way too long. He did hit a few really good ones around the 135 mark. We got a new Winn lady size grip Black and green. I cut the shaft down to 37 inches. After the grip was good (used hair spray had as hell to put on but ready for play in 30 mins.) I then turned the loft to 13.5. He went in the front yard hitting his foam golf ball and was ripping it 35-50 yards. I cant wait until next weekend to take him to the range again to see him hit his new driver. I have never seen him so excited.

Cobra does a great job appealing to the juniors. They have the junior driver and not many companies have that. They also do the one time free shaft upgrade which is awesome as well. I’m glad to hear that your son likes his new driver. As he gets little taller and grows out of that driver, get him the F8 junior driver. You will be able to get a deal on it by then and you will get that free shaft upgrade which will save you money down the road.

You have no idea how much he likes it he wanted to sleep with it in his bed tonight lol. I was just as excited for him as he was for him self. Now I need to upgrade my driver.

That’s is great. He will value that for a long time. Two clubs my son treasures since he was 8 are his Cobra driver and his TM Rosa putter he won in a putting contest. It’s about 2” too short for him now, but he won’t let me touch it. He said he checked eBay and nobody is even selling it anymore, so he thinks it’s a collectible.

We compared the F8 to our F6 and for his SS it went the same distance, but dispersion was better. I think it was because of the extra weight of the head, so we plan to add some lead tape. There really isn’t much just of a difference between the biocell all the way up to the F8. I have owned and hit most all of them. Except for for the LTD, which I have heard is actually better than any of the Cobra F drivers.

Mine was playing TS51 driver at 34”.  Built his OEM Fly-Z+ driver with Flynn at 35”. First time hitting it today at range was pretty good. Hit a couple longer than he ever has, most just the same, a few bad ones. Slight adjustment period and he should be hitting it great within the next few range sessions.

I also took one of my Rossa Tour Daytona putter cut down the shaft for him its about 3 inches too long for him. But he doesn't care. He loves it. Now I am going to get him a orange Bio Cell 5/7 wood and Bio Cell hybrid 4/5 put in a flynn shaft in orange of course. Then I will get him a iron set probably the us kids tour set 5-sw for him. I have never seen my son so interested in something like he has been about golf the last 2 days.

FYI...my son was fitted for a Ping G400.  He has his old driver for 2 years.  Conservatively, he has gotten an extra 15 yards. Took it on the course this weekend and for the first time he had every drive over 200 yards. Hit one drive 225 which is easily his best ever. These distances were measured using Gamegolf and not just eyeballing it.

As they get older, finding a good fitter is very helpful. Now, I have to go work my 2nd job to pay for it!!!!

Built this set for my 13 year old recently - D, FW, Rescue

Driver is TM R15 12 deg set to 13 deg. Found the Driver it on the very cheap online. Shaft is Flynn Velocity 42" with iomic grips. ~30-40 yards more vs the US Kids Ultralight (side by side compared on Skytrak). Total cost <$100. He has no issues loading thru and hitting this driver.
