Iíve been struggling the past several months. Iím not a good golfer but itís been especially bad. I havenít broken 100 in a while and sometimes I feel like Iím actually getting worse at this game.

So today on the front nine I shot a frustrating 59. I seriously contemplated leaving at the turn and hanging up the clubs for a while.

BUT THEN absolute magic ensued. Started the back nine with 4 straight pars. All were GIR. Shot a tidy 42.

Needless to say, I canít wait to get back out there this weekend :)

Well done!!!

There must be something to the "It was so bad I was going to quit after nine but decided to soldier on" attitude.  I shot about 60 on the front once and thought about walking off.  Decided to finish and shot 38 (2 over) on the back.

We should probably start with a horrible range warm up, think about not playing, play anyway and we would break 80.

I've had similar situations.  A few years ago I shot a personal best 78 (par 70) and was over the moon.  Two weeks later, on 4th of July weekend, I walked off the course after 12 holes (at the 5 hour mark...what a day) and couldn't hit a clean shot to save my life.

I'll go weeks solid where I play just awful golf, especially short game.  I'll get a case of the chipping/pitching yips that will all but make me cry in frustration.  Then, the following morning on the first tee, I'll start off the round eternally optimistic.

Golf is just one of those games that always keeps you on your toes. You get to the point that quitting seems like the best option then something, be that one good shot, a few good holes, a great round, etc., and then you wonder why in the world you ever thought about quitting. Rinse and repeat forever.

Had a string of sub 70 rounds last year, handicap went to +2 on next revision just in time for me to forget how to hit a shot and struggle to break 80 for a few rounds. Thanks to our wonderful handicap system, those rounds were just throw aways since I play so much and finding form became imperative to not lose all the money I have over the next month.

The worst rounds (or 9's) always seem to be followed by the best rounds.  I think this is akin to when you have a 30' putt for double bogey and you just dont care; you end up draining it.  I think expectations are so low after a horrible round that you loosen up, stop caring and just play golf instead of getting in ones head, only to shoot a great round.  The inverse is also true after your best rounds...the next time out is a nightmare as you try to recreate that glory.

Played 9 yesterday and actually stopped keeping score after 6 holes.  Slicing everything except my wedges.  Lost probably 10 balls.  Was taking multiple shots on each hole just trying to figure something out.  Now I'm counting down the hours till i can get to the range lol.

Sounds like golf to me. I know I have been 6/7 over par after 3 holes and still shot mid seventies. Just never know so it's important to have a short memory in golf.

A few years ago I had been improving week on week and shot a +1 round which was really good for me. Following week I shot +20. I put my clubs in the shed and didn’t play for 3 years and had no desire to pick up a club or even watch golf on the TV. Then I changed jobs and mentioned to my new boss that I used to play golf. He booked me to play in a company competition and the bug bit again. Now I rarely get frustrated with the game.

A bad day playing golf is far better than a good day at work!!

Good job on the back 9.

Im sure we've  all been there and done that.  I know for a fact I have and many times.

Saturday before last, my buddies and I took on 36 holes.
First round, I shoot a smooth 96 and I normally will post a 81-84 on that course.   If I hadnt of been riding with one of the other guys, I would have went home.

Second round, I shoot 81. The errors / corrections I made between round 1 and 2 were small.

A tiny bit off line on a couple of putts. A spike mark, a bit much or too little speed.   A duffed bunker shot, an unlucky bounce, a strike slightly on  the toe and ball goes in the drink.... It gets in your head and goes downhill quick.

Golf is hard.

I can relate...and as maddening as it is at times, I keep coming back for more.

I've been chipping and pitching great since the start of 2018... then this last week we went out to practice and "Bam" random chipping shanks. I've also had the bad front 9 great back 9 or vice versa... I've wanted to call it a day, soldiered on and kept playing.

Golf is a crazy game!

At least you know you have the potential for that 42 somewhere in your bag. Obviously the trick is in finding it. I think when we get kerfuffled tension and quickness lead to total loss of control over the club.

A few years ago I entered into a phase where I was consistently hitting into my course's fescue, pull hooks, block fades, you name it, and not just tee shots but all through the bag. I got so disgusted that I just didn't care and at one point on each tee I just told myself 'I don't care if I hit this driver only 150, but I will put it on the fariway.' I started using what I now call my 'grandma swing'. Guess what - I started hitting the middle of every fairway, and they were going much farther than when I was swinging quick and hard. Using the grandma swing (and not just quitting on the swing) and concentrating on good square contact is now how I reset and get back into the round. I almost never have a full 18 of crappy golf anymore (I know I just jinxed myself).
The absolute perfection of existence, life, and aesthetic beauty is the work not only of evolution but of a powerful being.

Last year in our golf league I shot 46 and emailed my team captain and told him I quit.  He talked me out of it, the next week I shot 37.  Such a frustrating game.
