With the level of service these guys get do you really think it matters that much? Say you're a TM guy or a Callaway guy. Both companies make several drivers, iron sets, etc. With launch monitors, access to any shaft out there, pro club builders able to change loft, lie, swing weight, etc do you really think a guy couldn't get set up with one company? Serious question

Says the guy from Carlsbad, CA.

Seriously Callaway has some nice clubs and obviously custom make them for each pro but personally I prefer a TM driver and Vokey wedges.  Bottomline the player often in contention and getting the tv coverage on weekends will make out fine in endorsements anyway.  Golf is such a mental game if using a Vokey wedge gives them more confidence to even shave off one stroke over the course of a tournament it's worth it on today's PGA.  If I were in Reed's position would be using the clubs and ball I feel most comfortable and the tournament winnings/endorsement money will follow.

Club deals are getting less and less lucrative, also the whole not being likeable thing probably hurts the $$ value

I know they say that even though a player has an equipment deal, they can play something different if it works better for them. But with the amount of money a company pays them, you know the players feel pressure to hawk the latest and greatest club every 6 months. Not having to put up with that has to be worth something. They can stick with what works until it doesnít. No changing just because someone had an epic idea.

I love that he doesn't have a sponsor.  I read that he spent an insane amount of time going through his bag to find the very best setup for him.  Not having an equipment deal has allowed him to get exactly what he wants.

I hope he sticks to his words and not getting a deal or maybe he just signs partial contract that still allow him to play some clubs and some sort of endorsement too, best of both worlds

Thereís much less pressure to sign an equipment deal when Nike is paying you big bucks to wear their clothes.

He will sign a deal soon though; Iíd put money on it. Probably Mizuno or something for an irons only type thing. I think Patrick will want a deal that keeps flexibility in the driver, wedges and putter. Newly minted Masters champs get offered a lot of money for deals...

It would be nice to have, but a guy like that doesn't need a club deal, they have plenty of money

Its guys like Jamie Lovemark, Dechambeau, and Beau Hossler that need club deals for the money

Lovemark has made nearly 5mm over the past 2.5 years (just on PGA)...even with travel, commissions, caddie, entourage, taxes I think most of us (especially at age 30) wouldn't be eating Top Ramen for dinner every night with that type of income!

Just because they don't have a deal doesn't mean they don't still get access to the vans. They still get all the fitting, the options, the tweaks, etc. that you would with a deal. The hope is that if you give them good enough service they may come for a full or partial bag deal and you can have them playing more of your clubs.

Given the fact that, if I remember right, he found out his lofts and lies were all jacked up at one point, I don't think he's much of a guy who looks for tweaks often. If it works, it works.

Attachment 20180408_005636.jpg

Looks like he took it out of Tiger's old bag..

Stenson used an ancient three wood forever. Still can't believe he switched considering how well he hit the old one

He still uses it. He had a brief dalliance with an Epic fairway wood but the old Diablo went back into the bag shortly thereafter and has remained there ever since.

I look forward to the 1 week a year when Stenson puts the newest offering in the bag, has a few pictures taken, then pulls the headcover off the new club and slaps it on his old faithful, lol. The guy knows what works!

If anything, I can foresee Titleist signing him to a ball deal if he so chooses.

But all the companies that were in his bag, all have pictures of the equipment used saying "choice of the 2018 Master's champion" "Meet the Driver that's enjoying Major success"

So if they are making any money of what's in his bag, he is the only one NOT benefiting from that. So in that sense kind of stinks for him, but if he plays what he likes and comfortable with, his pay days will come on Sunday's when he is near the top of the leaderboard. And he if keeps doing that, the sponsorship money will keep going up and up to sign him.

I'd say he is in a good spot right now.

For an equip junkie it's the worst time to have a club deal. Most would play a mixed bag if they could, too many gems from other brands
I'm not a fanboy, but I think Brooks Koepka has the players bag. According to my caddy buddy (who EVERYONE is familiar with), if there were no club/ball contracts, most guys would be playing what Koepka is playing....He also claims that everyone on Tour would play the ProV1 if not for full ride contracts to play something else. Not that the other companies don't make very good golf balls, they just aren't as complete as the Titleist......

I hate teeing up a TP5x and part of it being missing!

These guys could TRADE bags on the first tee and shoot within 2 shots of where they do with their clubs

Maybe figured out that a club deal was what was preventing him from winning more. No company has the best club in every category. Maybe being burdened by the weakest link of a company could impact overall play..Others like Christie Kerr arenít sponsored by PXG because she wonít use their inferior drivers or putters. Ironic as she may be the only one with multiple wins with their overpriced irons..

Man, you guys all know jack poop about negotiation.

Homie is sitting with a Green Jacket; he should sit back and let the offers pile in. Then, he can discuss it. Probably not worth it.

14-club deals are for up and comers. They help pay the bills. Reed is going to make 25 more appearances at Augusta; thatís worth some club cash. If it isnít there, he can should and will go without a deal.

i started playing golf in1958 and in those days it was pretty much one brand throughout the set except for the putter which was sold separately...

i remember my first set was all wilson staffs and had complete sets of macgregors vips,us royals, first flight, haig ultras and wilson 1200s...

when components became popular in the 80s and 90s i had separates sets for woods and irons then including prima IIIs and golfsmiths..

i was a callaway loyalist for about 20 years with a complete set of their clubs and bag including an odyssey putter..

in the early 2000s i started mixing my clubs with different brands for driver, woods and hybrids based on how well i hit them but normally had the same iron set from 5-PW and several wedges of different brands in the GW,SW and LW..

right now i am not biased towards any particular brand but can usually play any brand  of irons as long as the gripsize is correct as i use undersized grips and the shaft flex fits my game..

in an ideal world the best equipment deal  for me would be for a maximum of 8 clubs leaving room for a driver, fairway wood or hybrid,  2 wedges and putter..

That looks like the VR Ltd which happens to be an awesome club! Not a bad word to be found anywhere about that club.

I like the idea as well, one company does not make all the best clubs.  I figured Tiger would have done the same when Nike got out of equipment.  Not like he needs the extra sponsorship $ from Taylormade.

a professional that can't be bought .... huh imagine that.  This should sit well with a small faction of members on this site.

I think everyone here has it wrong.  I donít think any manufacturer wanted to pay a guy that most golf consumers hate. If I were an executive at a Golf company I wouldnít offer him $hit. I was at a Masters viewing party and 7 of 8 people were actively screaming at the TV for him to choke. We actually decided to change the channel and NOT WATCH the awards ceremony.  A first in my adult life.

You donít pay a guy big bucks just because heís good, you pay him because heís good AND you think buyers will relate to him, like him, and have a desire  to play what he plays to emulate him. You put Reed in your equipment and many people will actively choose NOT to buy your gear because a di@khead plays it.  It could quite literally harm your sales rather than help them.

Thereís a very specific reason Rickie and Jordan quite literally have sponsors beating down their door. People ADORE them.

After a Masters win, he has certainly made himself more marketable, but if you watched the tournament you saw the reaction from the fans.  I donít think Iíve ever seen more people root harder against someone.  The facial expressions on the still pictures of the fans when he makes the last putt tell the story.  Itís amazing to see so much disappointment at such a moment.

If anyone knows a thing or two about being an insufferable a** its the editor of that other site.  But I give him props for featuring a couple Geek Golf driver heads in that background pic.
