There was an article posted below that P Reed doesn't have an equipment deal per his own choosing.
I find this hard to believe. I know Callaway didn't continue their relationship with him, but he coudn't get some sort of pay for play deal, he is ranked high enough to warrant it.

Thoughts?

I hope the trend continues. I love seeing the bags of guys that don't have an equipment deal. I can understand if you are just starting out needing the money to get your career going, but once you're established it seems like clothing/shoe/bag money would be enough to play whatever equipment you like and are most comfortable with. Not that I know anything about life on tour or what these guys need to survive...I just love seeing an interesting WITB on Monday and Tuesday, lol.

Why is this so shocking? The guy likes the idea that he can choose whatever clubs from any manufacturer out there and not be beholden to any particular equipment manufacturer and after what he pulled off this past weekend, sure looks like it worked out for him

i think a top 20 player with a win every year on tour could get a pretty sweet club deal.

Does anyone remember that really strange story and him finding his loft and lies all over the place? I seem to recall that he only lets a buddy work on his clubs and not the guys in the tour truck then basically threw Callaway under the bus about him not playing good because of it. He definitely does things his own way within his "circle"

The green jacket and 1.98M is probably worth more to him than any company would be reasonably willing to pay him.

He spent the last year of his Callaway deal tinkering with all kinds of other brand equipment. Totally believable especially considering he has a Nike apparel deal and can get more money out of that later as he continues to get bigger in the game.

It would be nice to have, but a guy like that doesn't need a club deal, they have plenty of money

Its guys like Jamie Lovemark, Dechambeau, and Beau Hossler that need club deals for the money

For an equip junkie its the worst time to have a club deal. Most would play a mixed bag if they could, too many gems from other brands

What is wrong with that Nike Fw? I know some very good players still using Nike gear (Mr Fleetwood of Lancashire...) and it obviously works. A five year old BMW or Sony TV are not junk.

The head-to-toe apparel deal, corporate non-OEM bag and mixed club set-up seems to be an increasingly popular trend on Tour at the moment. Obviously the guys that were under contract with Nike have contributed to this trend, but Adidas are starting to expand their stable beyond TM staffers, and Under Armour have a few players on this basis too.

Makes sense to me that players would do this. Being able to choose whatever equipment they want without having to consider whether they are falling foul of any endorsement contracts, and still making money off other deals with non-OEM golf manufacturers.

He still uses it. He had a brief dalliance with an Epic fairway wood but the old Diablo went back into the bag shortly thereafter and has remained there ever since.

I too would like to see this trend continue. It seems just about every free agent (and even some non free agents) end up with mixed bags and its way cooler to see what dudes play when they have a choice. Reed definitely seems like a tinkerer as well given the odd Vokey wedge that was always in his previously all Callaway bag and the fact that he switched back to the Aldila Rogue Silver for The Masters. You would have a lot more cult classics and clubs with more cool history if guys were able to hang on to what they liked as long as they could. I wish everyone had a Stenson 3 wood or a TW Scotty as a staple in their bag.

That would explain it then. Reed’s WITB is a thread I am yet to subject myself to.

Bag & club deals are all about money, and nothing to do with playing better golf. Give me a bag full of bats that optimise performance, rather than increase bank balance.

More players are going this route than seemingly ever. Its worth discussion for that reason. And I'm with you, I think more guys on tour are club geeks than we think.

Ever catch a glimpse of an asian tour bag. Its art. Worn out 3-irons with leading edge grinds from overuse. JDM drivers. Fairways from 10-15 years ago. ETC. Some incredible setups, very entertaining.

Having a go to club at the elite level is really cool and signature. With all the temptation and eventual poor performance of any club (often temporary) having something you stick to no matter what. Love that

Any other pros with notable clubs in this era that have had lasting power outside of putters???

I know some champion tour guys have some but can't really think of many on PGA level.

I wrote this in the other thread.

I was told the back story about this  a few weeks ago while attending a seminar on the Rogue at Callaway's Canadian HQ.  Reed asked Callaway for a certain amount of money to re-up.  They counter offered saying they only had room for one more player and gave hime a drop dead date.  He went a day over the date and agreed to sign.  They said too late; we already signed the other player and there is no more $ to be spent.

I suspect the "other" player is Sergio Garcia.

With the level of service these guys get do you really think it matters that much? Say you're a TM guy or a Callaway guy. Both companies make several drivers, iron sets, etc. With launch monitors, access to any shaft out there, pro club builders able to change loft, lie, swing weight, etc do you really think a guy couldn't get set up with one company? Serious question

Ping Anser hybrids still floating around; Phil for a bit and I believe Kuchar and Snedeker still. Fred Couples still rocking an SLDR driver and a Callaway FT-i 3 wood. The aforementioned Vokey in Reed's bag, an SM5 even with the new Artisan wedges around it.

I got the feeling the relationship was pretty strained after the loft/lie comment. I mean, Reed told enough people to where it got back to the announcers. They said on live TV that Callaway had his lofts/lies all messed up.

I find that hard to believe given that the Callaway truck guys probably bent over backward and triple-checked everything trying to please Reed. But either way, I can imagine the Callaway crew wasn't thrilled with how things played out on live TV.

For an equip junkie it's the worst time to have a club deal. Most would play a mixed bag if they could, too many gems from other brands
I'm not a fanboy, but I think Brooks Koepka has the players bag. According to my caddy buddy (who EVERYONE is familiar with), if there were no club/ball contracts, most guys would be playing what Koepka is playing....He also claims that everyone on Tour would play the ProV1 if not for full ride contracts to play something else. Not that the other companies don't make very good golf balls, they just aren't as complete as the Titleist......

I hate teeing up a TP5x and part of it being missing!

These guys could TRADE bags on the first tee and shoot within 2 shots of where they do with their clubs
