Looking at the bags of the top players at my club - most of them play stock clubs.  The top golfers I play with have never been fitted.

Some of them don't even know what shaft is in their drivers....  Some of them even have mis matched wedges! The horror!

They don't know the difference between cast and forged and don't even have putter head covers....

just saying.....

Something I noticed.  Most good players play something they bought off the rack.  Many of the times it's based on brand loyalty more than anything else.

Virtually every top players at my club play stock clubs. Two of them even played Callaway Fusion irons for several years. These are guys who are legitimate 0-2 handicappers who played in the National Amateur numerous times

Generally I would agree with this. Most of the full fledged junkies who fiddle constantly and spend a ton of money are upper single digits trying to find that magic to get to scratch. Unfortunately that doesn’t happen. Frankly I’ve only known a handful of top amateurs in my area who play blades too. Although I’ve seen there’s a real trend for the youngsters playing blades at tournaments. I like nice stuff and I’ll pay for it, but I know that’s not making me much better. I buy clubs that flight the way I want and that I middle every time when testing. If im testing it and just not quite pouring it I don’t buy it. As for shafts, again I don’t really care what it is as long as I hit it straight and I get the numbers I want.

I think it depends a bit where you play, a few years ago I had to move for work and joined a local public course that was fairly cheap. Many of the better players would fit into it what you say, not really caring what they used, some not even knowing what shafts etc. But that was kind of typical for everyone at that course, regardless of handicap.

After I moved back and rejoined my old club which is in a notable golfing area of the world(Melbourne's Sandbelt), it's the exact opposite, I'd say in a pennant squad of 12 about 10 have been fitted on Trackman or similar, know exactly what they have down to the loft/lie even custom grind wedges, dabble with different training aids on the putting green, have had sessions with Sam PuttLab, use various putters, try different golf balls basically anything for an edge.

Whilst it's the guys outside of that who are more likely to just buy clubs off the rack from a retail store, even then I have played with many blokes who are off say 18 and have been custom fitted at Taylormade/Mizuno/Callaway etc.

An interesting observation... For years I just bought any 10.5, stiff shafted driver, played a 33 inch putter and irons that looked good to me in a stiff shaft and played Titleist balls.

Now I have to use trackman for launch and ball speed, make sure the shafts are right in both my irons and woods, make sure my lie angles on my irons are right, think about bounce and grinds for wedges and wonder if the ball I'm playing is best for me.

Funny thing, I still have a 5-6 handicap and if anything drive my self nuts wondering if my equipment the "right fit" for me.

Looks like the Head pro in the picture didn't want to miss the Master's coverage.

Pretty sweet turf on the stairs as well.

Lots of green and white, the National's Trademark Infringement lawyer's are going to have a field day with this guy. :shok:

Good players can learn to make what they have work for them. Others could probably get a touch better if they actually got fit. I do agree it has some to do with what area you are in. A lot of people like to follow, if there are a few good players that are custom fit, it is likely a few people will follow and then the trend continues. It also could have to do with how accessible that stuff is around there.

As far as the blades thing goes. I personally don't know any good players who aren't playing some sort of "players" irons or blades. 2 HC I know plays MP4, 3.5 I know plays mp5, scratch I know plays 718 ap2 and another 716 MBs. I'm sure they are out there but I haven't come across many.

I don't think it's any secret we put too much stock in`everything we game around here... it's most likely overkill and most of us can probably shoot similar scores with OTR equipment anyway, but I don't think most of us here find that all that much fun.... Many ways to enjoy this game.

noticed the same over the years....

I would say 75% of the guys I play with and lose to play off the rack stuff, usually looking for stuff on sale.  None of the really good golfers I play with really care about shaft weight and lie angles and all that jazz.

Would it be "more the archer than the bow"?  The arrow being the ball?  I have always found the "Indian not the arrow" saying curious.  Serious question as the latter saying is very common.

One of the best guys at my club is the same way. Plays once a week. Mizuno mp 69 s300. Dirt in all the grooves. No head covers on any woods or hybrid. Putter is an old arnold palmer 8802 style that he drags along the cart path. He just scores.

My dad's playing partner is a legitimate scratch in his late 50s and he plays Callaway Diablo set off the rack that he bought 10 years+ ago and he wins every tournament they play in.......and here I am thinking if I should change my shafts to Modus 105 from the NS Pro 950 on my irons....

Really? My clubs driving range sounds like a live version of the golf WRX equipment section and the BST with guys selling gear left and right and folks getting fitted on demo days all the time. Sounds like your clubs golf iq is a little low.

So I guess that's a tie, one to one.

Which proves exactly nothing.

(And in any case, a seeming rant against knowledge of equipment on a golf equipment forum is sort of odd, don't you agree?)

I think it certainly depends on the club.  This is not the case at our club.  I would say all of our top players have done a thorough fitting.  Some of them update clubs annually (just saw many of them at a recent Callaway fitting with Trackman on our range).  That being said, yes, they could probably play with anything.
Callaway Great Big Bertha with Graphite Design AD-DI 6
Callaway XR16 4 wood with Graphite Design AD-DJ 7
Tour Edge XCG-4 3 hybrid with Graphite Design UT 85
Cobra King F6 4 hybrid with Graphite Design UT 85
Callaway Apex CF16 5-AW with Nippon 950
Vokey SM6 56.08 and 62.08 with Nippon 950
Scotty Cameron NP2

Looking at the bags of the top players at my club - most of them play stock clubs.  The top golfers I play with have never been fitted.

Some of them don't even know what shaft is in their drivers....  Some of them even have mis matched wedges! The horror!

They don't know the difference between cast and forged and don't even have putter head covers....

My general rule when looking at someone's bag is the better / more premium the clubs the higher the handicap.

Good players are going to be good players with anything, they are also more sensible to marketing hype.

Bad players are more desperate, they will be more willing to buy into the promise of 20 extra yards for that TaylorMade driver or that putter that can't miss.

I've played with $600 shafts and had custom fit irons by the guys fitting tour players, it has never made any difference to my scores, so I am now playing rusty old irons from 2012.

*That's not to say I don't always wonder about new clubs...
