Hello WRX community,

I am a recent college graduate and have spent the last year and a half grinding my way into a career in the food industry! I currently live just north of the Grand Rapids area and as such have access to a plethora of great golf courses! (i.e. Tullymore & St. Ives, Pilgrim's Run, Hemlock GC, and Grand Haven GC just to name a few).

In 2017, I played over 60 full rounds of golf which saw my handicap plummet to around a 4.5 by season's end... I began the year at an 8.5 and slowly learned that wedges and putting are where real strides can be made in lowering one's handicap.

This year I plan to start playing some small competitive events locally and see how my game measures up to others in the area.

The last WITB I posted on this site was some years back when I was just discovering my passion for the game and went through more equipment than I care to admit... you know how it is WRX.

Anyways, here is my current setup going in to the 2018 season - a lot of time, thought, and not to mention $$$$ has gone into my bag over the past year. Overall I am incredibly happy with my current setup, but am always open to some further experimentation!

Hope you enjoy! And as always feel free to comment or ask me any questions you might have?

Thanks for looking!

Driver: Titleist 917 D2 10.5* with Aldila Rogue Black 95 MSI shaft
3 Wood: Callaway 816 Big Bertha Alpha DBD 16* with Graphite Design AD-DI 8s shaft
Hybrid: Titleist 913H 21* with Graphite Design AD-DI 95s shaft

Headcovers: Sunfish leather collection
Bag: Older Model Titleist Carry Bag - bought this up at a local golf show in the winter and fell in love with the simple green and white colorway (a la my alma mater - Michigan State)
Range Finder: Bushnell Tour X

Comments: Did a lot of testing with the Callaway Epic and Epic SZ last year which was stupid long when struck square, however I ultimately chose to stick with a vanilla 917 D2 setup as it is 100% more forgiving and I can comfortably work the ball both ways off the tee for the first time in my life... also, the 913H will probably be buried with me when I die!

IMG_3406.JPG

Driving Iron: **Recently ordered** Taylormade P790 UDI #2 (bent 2* strong) with Project X Hazrdus Black 85g shaft
Long Irons (4-6): Titleist 716 CB with Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts
Short (7-PW): Titleist 716 MB with Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts
Wedges: Vokey SM6 (52F, 56S, 62M) with Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Onyx S400 Shafts

Comments: Bought these irons and wedges after being fitted for them at Carl's Golfland in Bloomfield Hills. Love the forgiveness of the CBs in the longer irons, but feel that I can really dial in my shorter irons with the MBs (surprisingly more forgiving than one would think!). Wedges were a real revelation last year as the grinds are specific to each of my wedge needs allowing me to have more confidence in every pitch/chip shot.

Gamer Putter: Scotty Cameron Buttonback Newport 2
Headcover: Air Jordan "Masters Edition" by Grindin Golf Co.

Comments: Splurged and picked this classic up at the end of last year and haven't looked back. Had it shortened and bent a few degrees upright and it has been nothing but money ever since... next up might be a Super Rat????

Backup Putter: Taylormade Spider Tour Black (1st Run)
IMG_1644.jpg

Backup Putter: Scotty Cameron Futura X5 with custom welded plumbers neck by Tom Slighter @ Slighter Golf Co.
IMG_1664.JPG

Ball: 2017 Titleist ProV1 or Taylormade TP5x

Favorite Ballmarkers:
  • Manitou Passage GC - my parents recently retired and bought a small condo in Northern Michigan right next to this great course (Arnold Palmer design).
  • Manistee National Golf & Resort - played this course in a family reunion tournament last summer (incredibly hard finishing holes!).
  • Faceless Man Coin (GoT) - "Valar Morghulis".
  • Tullymore GC - one of Michigan's best!
  • Arcadia Bluffs GC - as good as it gets as far as golf goes in the great state of Michigan...
  • Bay Harbor GC - played this course last fall with my dad as part of his retirement gift and thoroughly enjoyed every second spent on the course.

Towel: "Saturday's Are For The Boys" - a high school buddy of mine recently got a full time job at Barstool and sent me over this little piece of bag swag.

Caddy Towel: "Circle Tea" microfiber towel by Grindin Golf Co.

I could not agree more! Their twilight golf rate is a steal during the summer time... Feels like you are secluded in the middle of nowhere for your entire round. A lot of fun holes out there as well!

Not really any parallel holes out there. Plus those trees are huge

Nice bag! I may be buried in my 913 H as well. Love that club. My golf group is planning a golf trip in August to Michigan. There will be four of us. So far we are playing Blythefield and Arcadia Bluffs, but haven't decided on a third course. We are flying out Sunday from Grand Rapids so possibly something close. I see you guys are hot on Pilgrims Run. Looks nice and close. Any other suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

I personally enjoy Tullymore GC if you’re over that way. Thornapple Pointe is right by the GR airport and is a decent track if you are in a time crunch before you guys fly out. Let me think of some other options... hmmm

Totally agree. A real hidden gem a little off the beaten path! That hole with the sand dune splitting the fairway is amazing. Really unique layout with all the dune sand and pine straw.

GR crew! Awesome bag. Just got my button back this week - it has a big task to replace my gamer, but it's absolutely beautiful.

I have yet to play Pilgrim's Run, but I love Mike DeVries so I want to get up there soon.
