I was thinking about this. When I started to play, I played with balls I found. I loved finding Titleists, but I played with them all. As my game improved I got more picky. First, Top Flites, then Ultras, Precept Extra Spins and finally, Titleists and now, TPXs (this week ( :swoon: :taunt: ). I made my first eagle with a Club Special, broke 80 with a Top Rock and 70 with an Ultra. So, what's the best round you had with a "bad" ball ??

It's probably a 77 (+7) with a Dunlop DDH 500. We had a club rule that said as a junior once your handicap was down to 18 on our 9 hole course you had to play with a committee member to see if you were "good enough" to play the main 18. At the time it was my lowest round ever, by about 5 shots.

Must be 25 years ago.

Back when I was like 14 +2 with a Dunlop "double titanium" bud light ball... for some reason I thought titanium was a good thing, and I only played with balls found in the woods... I wish life was that simple again 🙄
The number in the picture is my balls speed

Around Thanksgiving 2017 I went to my home course to play and it was obvious I didn't have it this day. After scrambling for bogey on a 350 yard downhill gift of a par 4, I reached into my bag and pulled out a Sponge Bob golf ball I found the previous round. I went even the rest of the round finishing one over 73, with a Sponge Bob golf ball. True story-

Nick Faldo was the first to win a major with a solid core ball, "Nick Faldo used the Bridgestone Precept Double Cover"(SI.com).

Not cheap, just better than anything in 1996.

The Bridgestone Precept and the Maxfli Revolution, played by Greg Norman, were among the first solid core urethane covered balls to be successful on tour. Great balls.

Al Gieberger carded the first 59 on tour with a Top Flight rock.

34 with a yellow Top Flite Bomb.  I think I could've putted the ball away from the hole and it would've hit something, bounced off and gone in.  Hasn't happened since!

75 (+3) with a Pinnacle Jr. Extreme 7 years ago. I was in the process of moving across the country so that's what I had at my disposal that day. And yeah, the Jr. Extreme had a characterized rocket on it, think Thomas the Train, but a rocket on a golf ball.

I didn't play an entire round so this doesn't really count... but I played about 7 holes with a Pinnacle Gold Lady Ball. All pars.

Not completely off topic... I was playing a while back and met up another single and we played the last 5 or so holes together. He played every single shot with a reduced flight range ball.... He didn't tell and I didn't ask.

Shot a 73 with an ANCIENT ball that had a Disney logo on it.

I knew a guy shoot a 70 with a Top Rock range ball.

Makes us all wonder why we play the higher end ones.
