One of the Chinese guy I golf with told me this, he thinks the Lunar Calendar is more accurate than the Gregorian Calendar widely used in the world.
Upon looking up the Chinese Lunar calendar, he is right for the recent weather pattern.

The Lunar Calendar falls approximately one month behind the calendar we use, but that still didn't explain the weather we'd been having.

There is two pattern of the way the daily fee golf courses handled the unpredictable weather pattern.  One type is raising the green fee to try to make up for the empty spots on the tee sheet in hope to come close to the annual prediction rate.   Another one is to drop the green fees to get as much golfers as they could whom did not mind playing in a sub-standard condition for a discount.
By the end of the day, the tee times were gone forever and the winner is the one which is smart enough to recoup as much as they could.

I used to play in all kinds of weather and golf course condition, but I'm to the age now that I won't enjoy treading through the muddy.
Not only got my equipment and clothing muddy but the soft turf shift 1/4 -1/2" when I shaft my weight to cause the bad shots.

Depending on when you play, you have to carry a mat to hit off of at St. Andrews.

Is this factual? I didn't know you couldn't play off of the ground at St. Andrews.

I used to hate this when I lived in Kentucky.

There are plenty of years where there is so much rain from March through May that you literally have ZERO opportunities to play on a non-saturated course.

As someone who currently lives in KY, I can attest to this. This spring has actually been the worst one that I can remember for golf. In addition to the constant rain, we have also been a good 20 degrees below our normal temps for this time of year. Most courses have gone over to zoysia, so the fairways are still completely dormant on top of being saturated.

It makes me depressed just to talk about it.

I'm in KY also.  Glad to hear it's not just me.  I thought I was just being my typical obsessive self.

I thought once DST hit I'd be out every evening, plus at least one day on the weekends.  I've only been able to get out about 1-2 times per week for the past 2 months.  The course has ranged from wet to sloppy the entire time.

On the plus side, it's usually just me and maybe 1-2 other people on the course, so I'm getting a lot of practice in playing multiple balls or multiple shots from each spot.  One day the GM even remarked to me "What are these other people doing on your course?".

You know your area is having a bad Spring for golf:

1. When your club's Icebreaker event gets canceled for weather.

2. When you actually consider taking a half day off from work just because the temperature is above 50 degrees F and there is some strange yellow ball in the sky.

3. When your forecast for your Club's Opening Day Event is for 2-6 inches of snow.

To make matters worse, my FIL is spending Thursday and Friday at the Masters and then heading to his club in West Palm while we watch his dog ... Sometimes life is just too cruel.

Pity my first world problems, eh?

Most aren't open, or are 1/2 open, walking, or CPO/90*.
Clickgear gonna get some more use, but my brother can't walk.

It's definitely true - for Nov-March (see "Fairways Mats" on link below)

https://www.standrew...m/Play/Policies

This is what you see at the 1st tee...you taek one with you for all fairway shots. I've heard anecdotally that many choose to play equal distance from the rough so they don't have to use the mat?

I played for the first time today since last November. Temperatures where in the mid-30s when we teed off, and the wind was rather brisk, and the course was wet, but at least I finally was able to play a round of golf. It will make it all the sweeter when the nice weather finally arrives.

Well that's just *censored* great, ain't it? Today reverted to what the forecast predicated earlier in the week. None stop rain. Managed to get ten holes in but we didn't bother with the back 8 as we knew they'd be muddy. I am so damn' sick of this weather.

The rain here in Portland, OR isn't letting up anytime soon.  At least we have the option of heading to the coast where the courses drain a little better.

I would have played better on mats last week, a lot better. Played today as it finally dried out a bit. the only holes that were tough still had mud laying around. I had some good holes for a change. The grass is still laying down, but some really warm weather tomorrow should kick it up a notch.

We're apparently getting some decent temperatures next week. From this week (barely getting into the double digits) we're going to double digits all day and almost staying that way overnight.

They've even put a symbol against some of the clouds that I've not seen in a while. Seven short yellow strokes in a circle. I'm sure that means something good but it's been a while since I last saw it :)

Ouch. We had a bit of rain but not a great deal. Think we've finally got rid of winter here but summer seems reluctant to take over. Mind you forecast is for temps over 20 degrees this week :)

I was in shorts and tee-shirt on the course yesterday.

I played today and it started snowing. Apparently Mother Nature does not want to let go if winter.
Ouch. We had a bit of rain but not a great deal. Think we've finally got rid of winter here but summer seems reluctant to take over. Mind you forecast is for temps over 20 degrees this week :)

I was in shorts and tee-shirt on the course yesterday.

Shorts! You are trending in a positive direction. I am sure we aren't too far behind.
Yeah, slight setback yesterday though. I took my jumper off after a couple of holes but nearly ended up putting it back on toward the end when it clouded over. But I'm optimistic enough to have moved the chilli plants I've managed to overwinter out of my dining room and onto the garden patio.

Rain persisted, and the muddy condition with tall wet rough and shaggy greens did not deter the golf courses from raising the green fees to the "Summer" rate.
I told me buddies last week that they will not see me out there in the muddy condition, maybe until we're into the months of June when the fairway have a chance of drying up.

Forecast for the Thursday and Friday look dry ( from the sky anyway ).  I'll see if there is any discount on green fees.  It's all perceived as value, and I won;t pay Summer rate for the muddy condition.

I managed nine tonight but poor light and worsening weather drove me off the course. I'm not a fair weather golfer but for evenings I'm less tolerant.

My club's course has dried out quite well now. Still a few muddy areas but mostly okay. But the weather is still mucking about. Today's high was 13 degrees. Tomorrow we have 22 degrees predicted. So in the space of six hours tomorrow the temperature is going to go from chilly to warm.

Ground is still soft and muddy in places, but forecasting a few days next week close to 70° F.
I'll see if there be some discounted green fees for the muddy condition.
